Therion's Loch features (incognito) on NZ TV
by Bruce 19 Oct '15

Loch model of 39 km cave features in this TV news clip at 3:47 (Me carrying two packs on the opening still, and stuck at 2:00) http://www.3news.co.nz/Deepest-cave-discovered-in-our-backyard/tabid/817/art icleID/330973/Default.aspx Centreline data has been processed for the last few(?) decades with a home-made unix application that uses proprietary routines, so will only live while Jonathan is with his current employer. As you might have guessed, an 'export to Therion' routine is being worked on. Bruce

Therion hanging after compile
by Jenny Black 13 Jan '15

13 Jan '15

Hi, When I compile therion, it appears to compile fine (assuming I haven't made a mistake!), and the green button on the right changes to green, and says "OK", but then it will hang. It is still running, and using lots of CPU, but I cant do anything with it without killing it. This happens either if I compile by hitting F9, or pressing the "compile" button. The same thing happens if I make a mistake and it doesn't compile, but gives me a red "Error" button. When I restart therion, and load back in my files everything works as expected... until I compile it again. I am running therion from debian (unstable) package 5.3.14-1, but I think this also happened in the previous version. Thanks, Jenny ___ Re-sending this message a week later as it didn't appear to reach the list (though i got no bounce message), apologies if you get it twice.

Compiling Therion projects from Notepad++
by Footleg 08 Jan '15

I find having multiple thconfig files open so I can compile different parts of my large cave system project very useful. So I was investgating how to run Therion from Notepad++ (my preferred text editor). This is how I got it working: I wrote a 2 line batch file containing these commands: cd %1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Therion\therion.exe" %2 Saved to somewhere on disk, and then call it from Notepad++ using the Run command, as follows: On the Run menu in Notepad++, Select the 'Run' item, and enter the command as follows: "C:\Personal\Caving\Therion\compileTherion.bat" "$(CURRENT_DIRECTORY)" "$(FILE_NAME)" (But using the path to where you saved your batch file). Save the command (I called it 'Compile Therion' and gave it the shortcut CTRL+T). Now with any thconfig file open in a tab in Notepad++, I can compile that project by pressing CTRL+T, or by selecting 'Compile Therion' from the Run menu. You can create multiple thconfig files in the same folder on Windows, by giving them any filename you want with the extension .thc or give them no extension at all. That way all the files will be listed in the 'Open File' dialog from the compile tab in xTherion. Next I'll see if I can get my batch file to open the output PDF automatically in Foxit Reader :) But that will be less general because I need to pick a PDF filename which can vary between my thconfig files. Survey length anomalies
by Bruce 23 Sep '14

23 Sep '14

I just noticed two anomalies re the way Therion records survey length. Data recorded like this... data cartesian from to northing easting altitude 7 7a 90 -99 4.5 7a 9 97 -9 4.5 9 10 31 -22 0 are reported as zero length surveys in the Therion survey-list output. A bug? Depends on point of view I guess, cartesian implies no actual distance measured, so zero survey length, but the definition of two points does have some parallels with a 'shot' and hence survey length. I contrast, 'no survey' leg lengths are recorded as accumulating survey length. ie flags surface fix 1 -41.1724 172.4155 572.6 fix 2 -41.20492 172.2789 574.04 fix 3 -41.21414 172.1513 574.04 etc data nosurvey from to 1 2 2 3 3 4 These are reported by Therion as accumulating survey length. I can see that the desirable behaviour of each of these scenarios might be different depending on one's particular intention. In the case of the particular data where I found this issue, I would prefer the; - underground cartesian data to accumulate length - surface nosurvey data to accumulate length, as it in fact does (I am joining up points from a gps trail) but in general I would expect; -underground nosurvey data to record zero length, because it will generally be a sound or sight connection with no actual survey, hence not surveyed length. I have not checked any of the other data survey formats. Other peoples thoughts on this? Bruce

What is going on with these survey legs?
by Bill Gee 09 Sep '14

Hello everyone - I am struggling with a couple of survey shots that Therion is not interpretting correctly. It might be a bug in how Therion averages forward and backward compass when the readings are near 360 and 180 degrees. Here is a block of centerline data. The two shots causing problems are B8-B9 and B14-B15. data normal from to tape compass clino backcompass backclino left right up down B1 B2 35.7 32 22 214 -20 14 4 4 2.5 B2 B3 16.4 31 -20 211 21 9 - 12 3 B3 B4 40.5 18 3 197 -2 0 8 5 4 B4 B5 24.6 82 5 263 -5 4 8 40 4 B5 B6 18.8 18 -5 199 5 3 12 5 2 B6 B7 43.0 59.5 2 241 -2 - 10 0 2.5 B7 B8 67.7 348 0 169 0 6 3 2.5 4 B8 B9 28.5 359 -2 181 2 8 4 .5 1.5 <<=== B9 B10 25.2 351.5 1 174 -2 2 8 2 1 B10 B11 16.1 40 -3 221 3 4 7 0 1 B11 B12 38.0 0 2 180 -3 3 7 1.5 3 B12 B13 17.3 338 -6 160 5 10 10 2 1.5 B13 B14 28.0 338 3 158 -4 9 8 0 3.5 B14 B15 49.0 359.5 -1 180 0 7 4.5 0 5.5 <<=== B15 B16 46.3 7 -10 189 9 4.5 5 6 1.5 B16 B17 22.1 317.5 8 140 -8 8 7 3 4 B17 BM1 15.5 348.5 -5 168.5 4 4 10 15 4 As you can see, this passage is going basically straight north. Therion interprets both shots as having a forward compass reading of 180, with result that the compiled map has the passage going backward on itself. If I replace the back compass with a dash, then the map compiles correctly. I tried reversing the forward and backward compass readings, but it made no difference. One of the shots (B11-B12) has compass readings of exactly 0 and 180. This shot displays correctly on the map. Any thoughts? Thanks - Bill Gee

A new improved version of Andrew Atkinson's web search program is now available for download at http://www.daveclucas.com/cms/index.php/downloads/category/15-therion. An example can be viewed at http://sarawak-caves.com/php/websearch.php. This program is still being developed with collaboration from Bruce Mutton. Fw: therion 5.3.15-2 MIGRATED to testing
by Wookey 25 Aug '14

25 Aug '14

Thanks to Olly for getting things to actually work, Therion (using wx-widgets3.0 and vtk6) is now back in Debian ready for the next stable release early in 2015. (It was removed a couple of months ago for not working with these updated library versions). Testing to check that this works for people is very welcome. This migration is just too late to get it into Ubuntu 14.10 (utopic), so that will release with 5.3.14-1 ----- Forwarded message from Debian testing watch <noreply(a)release.debian.org> ----- Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2014 16:39:13 +0000 From: Debian testing watch <noreply(a)release.debian.org> To: therion(a)packages.debian.org Subject: therion 5.3.15-2 MIGRATED to testing X-Spam-Status: No, score=-4.1 required=4.5 tests=AWL,BAYES_00, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED,T_RP_MATCHES_RCVD autolearn=ham version=3.3.2 FYI: The status of the therion source package in Debian's testing distribution has changed. How can I suppress white space around centerline stubs ?
by Michael Wasmund 23 Aug '14

23 Aug '14

Hello, For Fuchslabyrinth cave, we're using mainly morphed bitmaps. With the standard thconfig settings, centerlines carry a "white channel" along with them, blanking out any bitmap content near the centerline (see attached image). Is there a way to a) define the centerline so that the white space around it is not generated ? b) define centerline so that it is always drawn (e.g. not only the stubs) ? c) define centerline so that it is never drawn (regardless of "point station" definitions) ? Regards, Michael
