sql output station flags incorrect
by Bruce Mutton 15 Feb '09

15 Feb '09

Have just started playing with Therions sql outputs, and bumbling along. May have found a bug? Running the query select ID, SURVEY_ID, NAME, X, Y, Z, FLAG from STATION, STATION_FLAG group by SURVEY_ID, NAME; results in D SURVEY_ID NAME X Y Z FLAG 2 34 F100 2500604.74 6023114.36 620.49 fix 3 34 F101 2500601.9 6023115.01 618.94 fix 4 34 F102 2500599.78 6023118.02 620.73 fix 5 34 F103 2500604.18 6023127.05 622.96 fix 6 34 F104 2500613.11 6023143.64 625.37 fix etc. Problem is that ALL the 1200 station flags are fixed. Most should be null I think, there should be three entrance flags, and some continuation flags. At least that is what has been entered and what the 'caves' and 'continuations' outputs indicate. A bug, or am I misunderstanding something? Using 5.2.7 Bruce

Selective output of label text
by Bruce Mutton 15 Feb '09

15 Feb '09

Sorry to repeat posting on this topic. I think it's been done a few times in the last couple of years, and I either wasn't ready or skilled enough to actually take it up. And now I have a good use for it I can not find a posting that explains it sufficiently for my extremely limited MetaPost ability. The question is. How to implement selective printing of labels to pdf outputs? Back in June Martin suggested the following, and I'm tempted to try it, but I'll need some guidance on the MetaPost. The examples in the Wiki don't quite get me there. I think I need the original definition of p_label to start with? Bruce "I would just use symbol-hide command in the layout. It is possible to pre-define various sets of symbols which should be hidden at particular scale (in separate layouts which are copied into layout in use). If you want to hide only some (not all) of the symbols in a given type, you can use custom attributes combined with modifications in MetaPost definitions of symbols. (E.g. for p_label you would add condition that it should be displayed if the scale (denominator) is <=1000 or the attribute is_important is set to 1.) "

5.2.7 Loch is much better
by Bruce Mutton 13 Feb '09

The new 5.2.7 Loch brings all my old .lox files to life. I like the scene:station:labels. Because I'd added lots of station comments to my survey.th data, these are suddenly available, and help to identify where in the cave the wiggly coloured sausage shape is representing. Great work guys. Thanks! Two little things. 1. The default rotation speed makes me dizzy. It spins so fast so as to be un-intelligible. That's not so bad, but it seems not to be possible to make it go slow enough. The range of speeds I find useful are about 2mm either side of the central slider point (out of a total range of 15mm each side) on my monitor, and even with it as close to centre as I can get it with keyboard or mouse it rotates at a comfortable speed, but still too fast for some applications. I'd like to make it really slow sometimes. 2. This may be a bigger thing. The scene:station visibility for entrance and fixed station is based on flags I think, and this is very useful to be able to isolate these parameters. I use a lot of station marks (which I understand are not considered to be flags), as in mark RO42 RO46 RO47 RO49 RO54 fixed to identify survey cairns or otherwise somewhat permanent station markers in the cave (and on the surface). Is it possible to add "fixed station marks" as well as the "fixed station co-ords(?)" already implemented? Hmm, and while I'm at it continuation question marks and comments would be a useful thing as well. And thanks for fixing the map-header bug Martin. I'm looking forward to 5.2.8 to see it in action. (No hurry though) Bruce

loch performance issues on linux
by Thomas Holder 13 Feb '09

13 Feb '09

Hi, I'm using the "Loch" 3D-viewer on Linux. When moving and rotating the picture it flickers much. The autorotation is almost useless, it's so demanding on CPU and memory that it becomes unresponsive after few seconds. Other OpenGL applications like Google Earth work fine. The same lox-file also works fine with Loch on Windows XP. Where is the problem? Any suggestions? OpenGL Information: GeForce 8400 GS NVIDIA Driver Version: 173.14.15 Regards, Thomas

FW: North Points South & Fixed Points Move
by Bruce Mutton 12 Feb '09

12 Feb '09

>The fixed points and the surface image are aligned almost perfectly, but the grid appears to be about 10m too far north >relative to the fixed points and surface image. Correction: Referring to my original post, on creating a 'caves' text output (attached) I see that in fact the output grid is plotted correctly, but the fixed points and surface image have been input 0.6m too far east and 7.5 to 7.7m too far south relative to their explicitly stated input co-ordinates. So it would seem that it might in part be a Therion error in parsing/converting input co-ordinates rather than an output error? The north arrow still points south, unless I specify a DIFFERENT output co-ord system in the thconfig file; then it points north!?! Bruce

hidden points of centerline
by Boldt, Markus 10 Feb '09

Hello, I'm new in this list and would like to introduce. I have been caving for over 30 years and during this time I have many caves explored and measured. So far, I have always used Caverender together with AutoCAD or very early drawn the plans by hand. Now I have found Therion and I'm thrilled. However, it is somewhat difficult for me to find or to understand one or the other in the English manual . My english is a bit rusty and not so great. Also lacking in my opinion, examples and a good descriptor list in the manual. I know of course that the project Therion is doing from enthusiastic people and so I will even try as soon as I understand more from Therion involve me positively . Once it comes, I wish one or the other question to look or to answer. Now to my question: I have the following data sequence in my *.th-File: data normal from to lenght compass clino left right up down 1 2 10.83 125 -12 3.5 1.0 0.8 2.0 1 1a 1.0 125 -12 3.5 1.0 0.8 2.0 1a 1b 1.0 125 -12 3.0 0.8 1.2 1.5 1b 1c 1.0 125 -12 2.5 1.0 2.0 1.5 1c 1d 1.0 125 -12 2.0 1.5 2.0 1.0 1d 1e 1.0 125 -12 2.2 1.0 2.0 0.8 1e 1f 1.0 125 -12....... .......1j 2 0.83 125 -12 2.2 1.0 2.0 0.6 I want the data 1 to 1a ..... until 1j to 2 only may be used for the generation of a *. xvi file , but not for the production of the finished Map in plan and extended. I'd like only the main Points 1 and 2 are taken or written. So the Centerline should go directly from 1 to 2 . I hope I have expressed me in a understandable way. Many thanks for any idea Best wishes Markus

Just checking Presumably map exports to esri and kml formats can only be made from plan projections? The other map export formats can be made from any projection? Bruce

backcompass and backclino in team and instrument descriptions
by Duncan Collis 09 Feb '09

09 Feb '09

Hi, I think I may have found a minor bug: Therion does not accept 'backcompass' or 'backclino' as a valid role in the team command or a valid description in the instrument command eg this does not work: team "Fred Flintstone" tape backcompass backclino instrument backcompass "Silva Type80 F" instrument backclino "Suunto 646575" whereas this is OK: team "Barney Rubble" notes compass clino instrument compass "Silva Type80 C" instrument clino "Suunto 522534" The equivalent role and description are valid for the *team and *instrument commands in Survex. Font size
by Bruce Mutton 03 Feb '09

03 Feb '09

I thought I'd experiment with font sizes, as the text in all my pdf files has always being rather small. As a first step I added the following 2 lines to a layout for an existing map. code metapost fonts_setup(6,8,10,14,20); The sizes selected above are, I think, the defaults used by Therion, and so I would expect the pdf documents produced to be identical to those without the above code. As it turns out the fonts produced with the above are significantly larger (although more closely matching the stated font sizes). So either something is wrong somewhere, or Therion is really using default font sizes much smaller than is stated in the Therion Book I can send two pdf examples if wanted. Bruce
