Therion or Survex 'language' styles
by Bruce Mutton 28 Feb '09

28 Feb '09

Hi I've been dabbling with EditPad, and as of the last few days, NotePad++ text editors for managing my Therion files. I've started making a custom 'Therion' 'language' style to help highlight the data structure, and it occurs to me that someone may have already done this for Survex or Therion data files. If so they might like to post to the forum to save me the trouble of reinventing. Bruce

Changing the Legend text
by Fabio Kok Geribello 28 Feb '09

28 Feb '09

Hi people, I´m finishing a map and realized that there is a field (type of line) in the legend that is not translated correctly. Is there a way to correct it without compiling it again ? Many thanks, Fabio

Problem using extend command
by John Pybus 24 Feb '09

24 Feb '09

Hi, We're still working on our extended elevation, and have been having problems getting the centreline to work with extend configuration commands. We have found a number of occasions where an "extend reverse stationname" command reverses one leg at that point but doesn't apply to any folloeing legs. e.g. in a passage going 5 -> 6 -> 7 -> 8 -> 9 -> 10 extend reverse 7 gives: 5 -> 6 -> <- 7 8 -> 9 -> 10 when I would expect: 5 -> 6 -> <- 7 10 <- 9 <- 8 We've ended up having to add explicit extend right configuration for station 7, then station 8 and station 9 etc. We've tried to pare down our survey to one example of this in the attached file (julagua-elev_testcase.th) There are also several other examples where this occurs commented out. Any chance of fixing this? Cheers, John & Hilary

FW: Selective output of label text: A work-around
by Bruce Mutton 21 Feb '09

21 Feb '09

>Or perhaps a simpler approach is to modify the syntax following; > code metapost > fonts_setup(0.01,0.01,0.01,4,6); Took me a while to think of using non-integer font sizes, but it works as a way of hiding text of particular sizes when using scales such as 1:2000 or 1:5000 or more. Font point size 0.01 is too small to see! The downside is that the pdf file size still grows with each item of text. In my current exercise, the files are 800kB with the micro-text, and 200kB with no text. Still, it enables nice looking maps at any scale, with lots of text at 1:1000 or smaller, and progressively less text as the scale heads towards 1:10,000. The only change required is to uncomment the appropriate layout - two keystrokes! Bruce

On-Staion data to Therion
by Bruce Mutton 19 Feb '09

19 Feb '09

Has anyone transferred On-Station data to Therion? I've done a few km by hand about a year ago, and I think it's time to consider moving then next 57km. Has anyone any suggestions for semi-automatically translating large chunks and keeping all the meta data intact? Bruce

Correcting bad drawings
by John Pybus 19 Feb '09

19 Feb '09

Hi again, It would be good to have some advise on how people deal with mistakes in sketches. For example: I have scans of a survey which was drawn up in the field however the centreline on this contains a blunder (a leg 180 degrees out). I can trace the survey and give therion the correct centreline data, but it produces a scrap with very large distortions around the blunder -- I need to redraw a section of the scrap. I can export a .xvi to draw around but that doesn't contain the outline of the rest of the scarp to join in to. I can export a PDF or SVG but that can't be imported as a background into xtherion. How do people deal with this situation? My current idea is to produce a PDF, render to PNG with ghostscript, then import that into xtherion and overlay a .xvi (hoping they'll line up) to get station LRUDs to draw round. Does anyone have an easier way, I have a number of such things to correct? Cheers, John

North Points South & Fixed Points Move
by Bruce Mutton 17 Feb '09

17 Feb '09

Wonder if anyone can tell me what is going on here? I have a set of files that produce a grid, fixed points and a surface image as per the attached (fairly boring I'm sorry - image removed to keep the file size down) The output strangely has the north arrow pointing south (I am using 5.2.6 - however older datasets seem to process OK so far). The fixed points and the surface image are aligned almost perfectly, but the grid appears to be about 10m too far north relative to the fixed points and surface image. Perhaps my grid definition is somehow using a different co-ordinate system or the fixed points are been moved (in error?) by some loop closure routine? The displacement seems to be the same regardless of the std deviations following the point definitions. There are no survey legs, only fixed points. The grid is set by; grid-size 500 100 100 metres # coordinate grid The fixed points are set by; #btmleft centreline #Set Co-ordinate System and Entrances #------------------------------------ cs EPSG:27200 #NZ Map Grid 1949 #Recorded Entrance co-ordinates fix btmleft 2483000 8038000 000 0 0 0 #NZMG #Identified Survey Stations #-------------------------- station btmleft "btm left cnr of map" endcentreline #topright centreline #Set Co-ordinate System and Entrances #------------------------------------ cs EPSG:27200 #NZ Map Grid 1949 #Recorded Entrance co-ordinates fix topright 2486000 8042000 000 0 0 0 #NZMG #Identified Survey Stations #-------------------------- station topright "top right cnr of map" endcentreline The surface image is set by; surface cs EPSG:27200 #NZ Map Grid 1949 bitmap "./Parapara South GIS Plan geo98 contour 10000 A2.jpg" \ [349 344 2483000 8038000 2050 2602 2486000 8042000] endsurface

layouts and esri 2d gis format
by Bruce Mutton 17 Feb '09

17 Feb '09

Hi I notice that maps made with -format esri seem to be immune to layout settings. I get 4 sets of shape files regardless of my layout settings, Outline2d Lines2d Points2d Areas2d Now I was about to write that because these all lack symbology, only the outline is of any value, and so to reduce the garbage content (60% of the file size produced) I tried using symbol-hide group all #hides ALL except passage infill colour Alas, the directories and files produced are identical. But on closer inspection I see that the lines, points and areas are quite rich in attributes, so there is some potential for them to be useful. Two questions: Are there any layout settings intended to be relevant to 2d GIS outputs? Has anyone put together any arcmap 8.3 (or other free GIS package) utilities that make use of the line, point and area attributes? For example to semi automatically display the text or add symbology or hide entities with particular attributes. (I'm also not very good with GIS :) ) Bruce

Therion import of Survex Data
by Footleg 16 Feb '09

16 Feb '09

I am just getting to know Therion for the first time, because I am looking to create 3D models with surface overlays from my Survex survey data. I have managed to create a .lox file from a .3d file, but it does not include any passage walls. I just get a centreline. If I open my Survex generated .3d file directly in the .lox viewer it creates the walls from the LRUD data in the .3d file. But how do I get this data into a .lox model along with a surface? Footleg

Bus error
by Hilary Greaves 16 Feb '09

16 Feb '09

Hi We're trying to draw an extended elevation, and keep getting 'bus errors' on trying to compile the thconfig. One set of files that triggers an error is attached (this one just tries to draw a single scrap). Any ideas - is this fixable? Thanks, Hilary.
