loch performance issues on linux
Hi, I'm using the "Loch" 3D-viewer on Linux. When moving and rotating the picture it flickers much. The autorotation is almost useless, it's so demanding on CPU and memory that it becomes unresponsive after few seconds. Other OpenGL applications like Google Earth work fine. The same lox-file also works fine with Loch on Windows XP. Where is the problem? Any suggestions? OpenGL Information: GeForce 8400 GS NVIDIA Driver Version: 173.14.15 Regards, Thomas
Unfortunately, I have no idea... :( OpenGL commands for Linux/Windows version are basically the same - so it must be something very specific. Have you tried some simple models - e.g. no surface, no walls, just centerline? Or turning off some parts of the display - e.g. indicators? Regards, S. with simple models the flickering is less annoying and loch is quite usable. But that doesn't help very much, since my particular goal was to visualize the cave with surface and walls. Btw. I get similar flickering with Aven. Regards, Thomas

Your problem is probably this video card. Nvidia only provide proprietary drivers so things don't always work right. If you are using the free 'nv' xorg driver then that is 2D only so OpenGL will be emulated in software. It sounds like this is happening, as you say Aven is similarly slow. I don't know why google earth might work better, but that's proprietary too so maybe they have special nvidia magic? See which version of mesa you have installed (various *mesa* packages are normally responsible for the opengl support) and which X driver you are using. noveau is the free 3D nvidia driver. I've never really messed with this so can't be more specific. I've never even tried using loch on this machine which also has an nvidia card because I know it won't work with nv. I will finally (after several years of waiting :-) be getting amchine next week which should be loch-capable. I look forward to giving it a go.
