Selective output of label text
by Bruce Mutton 15 Feb '09

15 Feb '09

Sorry to repeat posting on this topic. I think it's been done a few times in the last couple of years, and I either wasn't ready or skilled enough to actually take it up. And now I have a good use for it I can not find a posting that explains it sufficiently for my extremely limited MetaPost ability. The question is. How to implement selective printing of labels to pdf outputs? Back in June Martin suggested the following, and I'm tempted to try it, but I'll need some guidance on the MetaPost. The examples in the Wiki don't quite get me there. I think I need the original definition of p_label to start with? Bruce "I would just use symbol-hide command in the layout. It is possible to pre-define various sets of symbols which should be hidden at particular scale (in separate layouts which are copied into layout in use). If you want to hide only some (not all) of the symbols in a given type, you can use custom attributes combined with modifications in MetaPost definitions of symbols. (E.g. for p_label you would add condition that it should be displayed if the scale (denominator) is <=1000 or the attribute is_important is set to 1.) "

Font size
by Bruce Mutton 03 Feb '09

03 Feb '09

I thought I'd experiment with font sizes, as the text in all my pdf files has always being rather small. As a first step I added the following 2 lines to a layout for an existing map. code metapost fonts_setup(6,8,10,14,20); The sizes selected above are, I think, the defaults used by Therion, and so I would expect the pdf documents produced to be identical to those without the above code. As it turns out the fonts produced with the above are significantly larger (although more closely matching the stated font sizes). So either something is wrong somewhere, or Therion is really using default font sizes much smaller than is stated in the Therion Book I can send two pdf examples if wanted. Bruce

Just an idea Is it easy to highlight latest revisions to the Therion Book each time it is released? Perhaps a line in the margin or something? Bruce

labels with <> characters

Is it possible to include the < or > characters in labels? My efforts produce only a dot, or get interpreted as part of a formatting keyword, such as <bf> etc. Regards Bruce

Atlas origin positioning in elevation to match plan view
by Bruce Mutton 30 Jan '09

30 Jan '09

Is there any reason why the origins of plan and orthogonal (0, 90, 180 270 deg) elevation atlas pages do not produce equivalent grillages? For example in a layout for a plan view atlas I have the following; #ATLAS NAVIGATION PANE ORIGIN LABELS #Sets plan labels #---------------------------------- #Choose arbitrary datum for Beautiful Bulmer Series # A3 Atlas sets based on existing magnetic co-ordinate grid origin 5485 6320 1075 metres #co-ords of lower left corner of 'origin' atlas page origin-label 1 A #label & type <across> <down> and in a layout for elevation view atlas I have; #ATLAS NAVIGATION PANE ORIGIN LABELS #Sets elevation270 deg labels #---------------------------------- origin 5485 6320 1075 metres #co-ords of lower left corner of 'origin' atlas page origin-label 3 A #label & type <across> <down> Notice that the origin co-ordinates are the same, and the origin-label is not the same. If the origin-label was the same I would expect the plan and elevation atlas' produced to have pages that represent exactly the same part of the cave, but it does not. As written above the maps produced almost represent the same parts of the cave on each page, but not quite. I can understand this difference if the elevation were not projected either 0, 90, 180 or 270 deg, but if it is, why the discrepancy? Is this likely to be something I'm doing wrong or is it a characteristic of Therion? Bruce

Compiler Preview Pane
by Bruce Mutton 29 Jan '09

29 Jan '09

In the XTherion Compiler window there is a Preview pane (bottom right) that is looking for a path to Acrobat Reader or to a pdf file. How does this work and what should it preview? My efforts generally come up with nothing at all, and once I think I got an error from Acrobat complaining about a corrupt file. May or may not have been related to my efforts with XTherion. Bruce

join two scraps to same end of other srap
by Bruce Mutton 27 Jan '09

27 Jan '09

I have a passage that splits into two, with the two passages located one directly above the other. I have three scraps that join at the common passage junction. When putting together a plan I try the following; join scrap1 scrap2 #lower end white river (top passage) join scrap1 scrap3 #lower end white river (btm passage) I find that the second join statement is quietly ignored, it has no effect and no warnings nor errors generated. I suspect that I could use the more general point to point join syntax without problem, but, forever looking for the easy way, I'm tempted to ask if there is a valid reason for the above behaviour? Join two scraps -count 2
by Bruce Mutton 25 Jan '09

25 Jan '09

I've been wondering for some time now why I could not use the 'easy way' syntax to join scraps with multiple passage connections to work. For example; join scrap1 scrap2 -count 4 My assumption was that the above would join scraps that connect in two locations - as in 4 wall joins required. Whenever I tried this I got a twisted looking passage as a result. The solution? Two passage connections should be coded as; join scrap1 scrap2 -count 2 Works much better now! The Therion Book entry could be clarified perhaps. Bruce

Cave Sketches don't offset
by Bruce Mutton 23 Jan '09

23 Jan '09

And Again; To get a quick preview of what my finished map will look like I've added some survey stations and cave sketches to my scraps. These plot nicely until I want to offset the map in which the scrap and sketch is contained. When the map is offset, the survey stations plot in the correctly offset location, but the sketch plots (incorrectly) in it's original location. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug? Bruce

Continuation list incomplete
by Bruce Mutton 23 Jan '09

23 Jan '09

I notice that continuations listed in scraps with no meta data (ie no -attr code, -text or -explored values) are not listed in continuation-list outputs. For example, the code below gives a ? on a 2d map, but does not appear in the continuation-list. point 123.0 456.0 continuation This is inconvenient if trying to keep track of them with continuation-list outputs. Is it possible to have them included in the continuation-list output in due course? Also I wonder if the object that contains the continuation definition could be listed, ie the scrap or survey (or file name), so that edits are easier to locate. (At present the survey that identifies the physical location is listed - regardless of where it's code is defined - and this is useful and should be retained) Am using version 5.2.5 Regards Bruce PS: I notice that the problem with continuation text being repeated inappropriately has been solved thanks.
