Tex and Therion comment characters
by Bruce Mutton 27 Jul '18

Good evening I'm trying to sort out some problem I'm having debugging a tex-map routine. I'm trying to rule out things that might be causing unexpected results (other than the obvious which is that I don't know what I am doing). The comment character for tex is % The comment character for Therion data files is # Does it affect the way tex is interpreted by Therion if the two are combined, as in the two examples below? Mostly it seems to have no effect, but now I am wondering if I am mistaken, and sometimes it does? # Define Map title overrides code tex-map # % Output map title as determined by Therion 5.3 is stored in cavename. # % It will be empty if there are multiple maps selected for any one projection # % \edef\temp{\the\cavename} % cavename from Therion # % \edef\nostring{} % empty string # % \ifx\temp\nostring % test if cavename is empty # Define Map title overrides code tex-map % Output map title as determined by Therion 5.3 is stored in cavename. % It will be empty if there are multiple maps selected for any one projection % \edef\temp{\the\cavename} % cavename from Therion % \edef\nostring{} % empty string % \ifx\temp\nostring % test if cavename is empty Thanks Bruce

shell script for creating .th2 and .th files for a given survey
by Jonny Prouty 21 Jul '18

21 Jul '18

Hello all, I have created a shell script for the most repetitive part of my therion workflow, setting up new .th and .th2 files to hold the actual sketch data to be digitized. The script has proven to be quite a time saver. I've cleaned it up a bit and added a usage statement and decided to release it into the wild. The script relies on imagemagick's display program, so as long as you have display and can run shell scripts, the script should run. I've only used/tested it on Fedora, but I imagine it will run on a mac without difficulty. It's possible you could get it to run in windows if you have a decent shell available. The script is far from perfect and still has plenty of rough edges, so feel free to comment and suggest changes if you feel compelled to. https://github.com/jonnyprouty/caving/blob/master/add_survey_trip.sh Best regards, Jonny Prouty

Adding entrance breaks extended elevation
by Bruce Mutton 21 Jul '18

21 Jul '18

Hi all We've been surveying a cave from half way between two entrances, and working outwards towards those entrances over a number of survey trips. As each survey trip has been completed, I have been drawing, and constructing an extended centreline, and attaching scraps. The extended centreline is just a little bit complicated, with two loops, but I have managed to get the breaks where I want them, and offset passages to lay it out nicely. As each centreline is added, I modify the extend left and right for that survey to suit the extended centreline shape that I want. I have 'anchored' the downstream entrance with a dummy survey leg, until I surveyed downstream to that entrance and I could remove the dummy leg. I have 'extended right' to the downstream entrance. All has gone well until I surveyed out of the upstream entrance, extending left, mostly. But as soon as I add a station flag to the upstream entrance, the shape of the extended centreline is broken. It looks like Therion is overriding the 'extend start' that I have in the middle of the cave, and replacing it with a start at the top entrance. This completely scrambles the shape of the centreline and attached scrap drawings. It looks a bit like the default behaviour listed here <https://survex.com/docs/manual/extend.htm> (the first paragraph of the main text) for Survex. I have tried a few approaches to avoid this undesirable behaviour, but nothing yet has worked. I would rather not try to recreate the extend development from upstream, as Therion seems to want me to do, because even with such a simple cave, there is some complexity and time involved in figuring it out. Good, but no upstream entrance flag Bad, after adding upstream entrance flag the extends are broken station 4.24 "Top Entrance" entrance Any suggestions? Bruce

what about a scrap option "-color" that overrides the layout foreground color ? survey too could have a color option. marco

Complex model visualization with Aven, Loch, KML and Compass
by Evaristo Quiroga 17 Jul '18

17 Jul '18

Hi, I have been a Lary Fish Compass user for almost 20 years. One of the reasons for having been so loyal to the program is its powerful visualizers (Cave Viewer and CaveXO); and at a time when the data was entered by hand its powerful data editor (Cave Editor). In Compass there are 2 basic types of concepts: "Surveys" assimilable to the Therion "Centerlines" and "Section", used normally to define Caves or caves parts like Therion "Surveys". With the "Complex Plotting Options" menu of the "Cave Viewer", I can show, hide, color, symbol, etc, of the centerlines and walls by section, surveys, dates and distances. It's a very powerful tool to analyses complex caves systems. The Compass PLT exported by Therion don't have the data structured by Compass "Surveys" and "Sections"; so I lose the ability to use the complex visualization options. Aven is a very powerful tool too. I like the easy and intuitive rotation controls and Error visualization. I can show/hide Therion surveys. But a can't show/hide the "Centerlines". All my centerlines have "id" and "title". I can't choose a color by survey. I can show/hide duplicate shots. I can colorize by depth, date, error, slope and lenght. Loch, the Therion visualizer. It's a funny tool. I like the 3D walls using the scraps walls. I can colorize only by depth and default. I don't know if I can show/hide the the different surveys. The Selection Menu is only informative, or you can play with it? . I can show/hide duplicate centerline shots, but I can hide duplicate shots walls (see an other post). Therion export models to KML, and I can use Google Earth to visualize it. With Google Earth I can show/hide the surveys and centerlines (Therion don't export the id or title, but I can recognize the name of the first station. I can change color and style to surveys and centerlines. I can't view in 3d underground. I am now an enthusiast of Therion/Survex and its derivative products: complex loop closure with weighting SD error by centerlines quality, sketch morphing, complete map creation, semantic symbology, automatic scraps warps when the centerline change, etc. That is why new projects are currently with Therion, and I am transferring from Compass the data of our jewel in the crown: Sistema Arañonera. Now, as a basic and quick model analysis tool, I use Aven. Loch uses it for some 3d walls representation. But done to miss some Compass complex visualization for analysis of complicated systems. Ideally, for me, Therion would export PLT with a Compass "surveys" and "sections" structure, so I could use the best of both worlds. Best Regards, Evaristo.

How to hide duplicate shots in export models?
by Evaristo Quiroga 16 Jul '18

Hi, I have shots with duplicate flags. I want hide this shots in the export models (loch and kml). In survex 3d, it's easy in Aven you can hide the duplicate shots. Any suggestion? Regards, Evaristo.

Dear all, I just received an invitation from the Indonesian cavers to participate to a cave mapping festival in Indonesia (10-12/08/2018). I will not be able to go there, but I send you the info if some of you are in the region during that time… The contact info can be found at http://stasiunnolfestival.org Cheers, Xavier > Début du message réexpédié : > > De: Chantal Agoune via Ct_crei <ct_crei(a)listes.speleos.fr> > Objet: [Ct_crei] Fwd: Stasiun Nol Festival > Date: 10 juillet 2018 03:43:21 UTC−5 > À: BUREAU FFSPELEO <bureau(a)ffspeleo.fr>, ct crei <ct_crei(a)listes.speleos.fr> > Répondre à: ct_crei(a)listes.speleos.fr, secretariat(a)ffspeleo.fr > > > > Dear President of Fédération Française de Spéléologie > > On August 10ᵗʰ to 12ᵗʰ 2018, an event called Stasiun Nol Festival 2018, which is a cave mapping festival for Indonesian cavers and speleologists, will take place in Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta. This festival will be the second to come, since the Stasiun Nol Festival 2016 was the first cave mapping festival ever held in Indonesia. > > The festival covers various programs, all with the aim to improve skill and knowledge on cave mapping among Indonesian cavers and speleologist, but the major programs will be a cave mapping seminar, and a cave map contest and exhibition. > > On the cave map exhibition, we want to give Indonesian cave surveyors an opportunity to learn from cave maps from all over the world. To achieve that goal, we invite members of your federation to participate in the exhibition as non contestant by sending us cave maps in PDF form. We, the committee of Stasiun Nol Festival 2018 will really appreciate this participation, and so will cave surveyors of our country. > > It will even be a greater experience for us, to have cave surveyors from your country as our guests in the festival. > > On behalf of the Committee of Stasiun Nol Festival 2018 > > Sincerely > > Erlangga Esa Laksmana > > >

in reply to markus question: quick answer is 'no": (1) semantics are different: therion is richer, topodroid has features of its own. (2) therion is OFFline (post)processing, topodroid is ONline processing (3) focus: large for therion, small for topodroid (4) maybe something else marco On Thu, Jul 5, 2018, 12:00 <therion-request(a)speleo.sk> wrote: > Send Therion mailing list submissions to > therion(a)speleo.sk > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://mailman.speleo.sk/listinfo/therion > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > therion-request(a)speleo.sk > > You can reach the person managing the list at > therion-owner(a)speleo.sk > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Therion digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. from therion back to topodroid?
