Colour leakage from point station-names
by Bruce Mutton 27 Apr '22

27 Apr '22

If I change the colours like this: symbol-colour point station-name [00 100 100] then the colour leaks into some of the debug scrap-names, but not all of them. So I deduce there is a problem with the coding for point station-names (not clearing the colour properly) or with the debug scrap-names (not setting it's colour properly). There was a similar conversation and subsequent fix in relation to line rock-border or rock-edge some years back (metapost code I think). I cannot find the thread now. I have also had apparently similar issues (about 3 years back) with point station colouring when plotting surface surveys. It is not too important as (in the case pictured) it only affects debug outputs, but might point to something inconsistently applied when coding. (Hoping it is not related to customisations I have made). Bruce

Problem with new default settings and recent proj changes
by Bruce Mutton 26 Apr '22

Martin Something bad happened between 6.0.0 and 6.0.5 that we only just noticed today (because for day to day work we only compile small sections of the cave). Therion 6.05 has moved some of our fixed stations about 100 m north (those specified with cs lat-long and cs EPSG:2193 NZTM) and others (specified with cs EPSG:27200 NZMG) stayed in their correct locations, severely distorting our cave. No errors reported, just outputs with large loop errors and distorted cave. Interestingly, it is the old archaic format NZMG that performs correctly and the modern and lat-long are relocated. The image below is located with NZMG, as is the cave entrance in the centre. The cave entrances left and right are located with either lat-long or NZTM. Before reporting this I thought I'd better at least try 6.0.6+3bc6556 I get a crash right away as the therion.log transcript below indicates. therion 6.0.6+3bc6556 (2022-04-21) - using Proj 9.0.0, compiled against 9.0.0 initialization file: C:\Program Files (x86)\Therion/therion.ini reading ... done configuration file: thconfig-GLMESM_System5000Map.thc reading ... done reading source files ... downloading the grid https://cdn.proj.org/nz_linz_nzgd2kgrid0005.tif... (Proj's purpose is to do transformations between coordinate systems.) This functionality was disabled by default and you could enable it using 'proj-auto' and 'proj-missing-grid' options in the initialization file. 'proj-auto' lets Proj choose the best transformation and you can set 'proj-missing-grid' to download a grid file (see <https://proj.org/usage/transformation.html#grid-based-datum-adjustments> https://proj.org/usage/transformation.html#grid-based-datum-adjustments) if the transformation needs it; see the therion book for details. The log file lists all the transformations chosen and used at the end. The latest commit (3bc6556) enables this "use the best transformation and download the grids if needed" functionality. We know that automatic downloads are a sensitive issue, but in this case we can trust the Proj library not to do any harm ( <https://proj.org/usage/network.html> https://proj.org/usage/network.html) and the user experience is much better. Could you check if this version works well with your data sets? Custom Metapost label can't display newlines or accents
by Rhys Tyers 25 Apr '22

25 Apr '22

Hello again, I’m hoping someone can help me work out a metapost problem. The code is available here <https://github.com/iccaving/migovec-survey-data/blob/master/layouts/metapos…> and pasted below. None of us know anything about metapost so this is a copy/paste job of this <https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg07234.html> code with some extensions. We want a label that can be turned displayed or hidden depending on a level variable. In a system survey I turn off lots of labels because there is lots of overlapping passage, but on more detailed ones I turn them back on. This level thing works well. What does not work is new lines or any non-ascii character. I have played around with this for a while and can’t work out how to make it work. I.e. this point: point 174.2178 755.6161 u:label_MY -attr lvl 1 -attr text "Hoover<br>Dam" -align tr -scale l The <br> is not replaced by a new line and in fact the < and > are rendered as question marks. [image: image.png] I think Therion does a substitution of <br> and it’s not real html or tex but if I try to use tex in there like Hoover \\ Dam then it just errors during compilation: [495] (./mptextmp.mp) [496] [497] [498] (./mptextmp.mpfatal: Command failed: etex --parse-first-line --interaction=nonstopmode mpTXLjoJ.tex; see mpxerr.log >> mptextmp.mp >> mptextmp.mpx ! ! Unable to read mpx file. l.2 btex \mainfont \thframed {\thnormalsize Hoover \\ Dam} etex I think this is because we are somehow not rendering with tex, and only rendering with metapost which has a limited character set, but I really have no idea. Any help would be greatly appreciated! The metapost code: layout user_label code metapost def p_LABEL(expr pos)= T:=identity shifted pos; pickup PenD; p:=fullcircle scaled .1u; thclean p; thdraw p; if known ATTR_text: text := scantokens(ATTR_text); thdrawoptions(withcolor .8red + .4blue); txtm:=image( draw txt; interim labeloffset:=0; label.urt(btex text etex); ); % draw label lab:=thelabel@#(txtm, pos); draw lab _thop_; % use color thdrawoptions(); bboxmargin:=0.8bp; write_circ_bbox((bbox lab) smoothed 2); enddef; def p_altitude(expr pos)= T:=identity shifted pos; pickup PenD; p:=(-.3u,0)--(.3u,0); thdraw p; thdraw p rotated 90; p:=fullcircle scaled .2u; thclean p; thdraw p; enddef; vardef p_label@#(expr txt, pos, rot, mode) = if mode=1: thdrawoptions(withcolor .8red + .4blue); p_altitude(pos); % append "m" to label picture txtm; txtm:=image( draw txt; interim labeloffset:=0; label.urt(btex \thaltitude m etex, lrcorner txt); ); % give extra offset in case of l/r/t/b alignment pair ctmp; ctmp:=center thelabel@#("x", (0,0)); if (xpart ctmp * ypart ctmp)=0: interim labeloffset:=(.4u); else: % diagonal alignment interim labeloffset:=(.2u); fi; % draw label lab:=thelabel@#(txtm, pos); draw lab _thop_; % use color thdrawoptions(); bboxmargin:=0.8bp; write_circ_bbox((bbox lab) smoothed 2); else: if mode=7: interim labeloffset:=(u/8); fi; lab:=thelabel@#(txt, pos); if mode>1: pickup PenD fi; if mode=2: process_uplabel; elseif mode=3: process_downlabel; elseif mode=4: process_updownlabel; elseif mode=5: process_circledlabel; elseif mode=6: process_boxedlabel; elseif mode=7: process_label(pos,rot); % station name elseif mode=8: process_filledlabel(pos, rot); else: process_label(pos,rot); fi; fi; enddef; vardef set_label_level (expr mylevel)= maxl := scantokens(mylevel); enddef; def p_u_label_MY (expr P,R,S,A)= T:=identity shifted P; U:=(0,0); save lvl; save style; if known ATTR_style: style:= scantokens(ATTR_style); else: style :=0; fi; if known ATTR_text: if known ATTR_lvl: lvl := scantokens(ATTR_lvl); else: lvl :=0; fi; if lvl < maxl+1: U:=(S*u*(length ATTR_text)/4,S*u*(length ATTR_text)/4); create_styled_label(ATTR_text,P,R,S,A,style); else:; fi; fi; enddef; initsymbol("p_u_label_MY"); % https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg07234.html % define a custom attribute called label_mode vardef create_styled_label (expr plaintext,P,R,S,A,defaultstyle)= save textsize, style, thetext; string textsize; if S = 0.5: textsize:="\thtinysize"; elseif S = 0.7: textsize:="\thsmallsize"; elseif S = 1.4: textsize:="\thlargesize"; elseif S = 2: textsize:="\thhugesize"; else: % normal is 1 textsize:="\thnormalsize"; fi; if known ATTR_labelstyle: style:=scantokens(ATTR_labelstyle); else: style:=defaultstyle; fi; picture thetext; thetext:=thTEX("\thframed {" & textsize & " " & plaintext & "}"); if A = (-1,1): p_label.ulft(thetext,P,R,style); elseif A = (0,1): p_label.top(thetext,P,R,style); elseif A = (1,1): p_label.urt(thetext,P,R,style); elseif A = (-1,0): p_label.lft(thetext,P,R,style); elseif A = (1,0): p_label.rt(thetext,P,R,style); elseif A = (-1,-1): p_label.llft(thetext,P,R,style); elseif A = (0,-1): p_label.bot(thetext,P,R,style); elseif A = (1,-1): p_label.lrt(thetext,P,R,style); else: p_label(thetext,P,R,style); fi; enddef; endcode endlayout

Revising a map definition with offsets
by Rhys Tyers 12 Apr '22

12 Apr '22

Hello, I want to be able to revise a map definition to add offsets to some submaps. I'd like to know if this is possible. Assuming a map definition like this (where the submaps are defined in the same file): map m-all-p -projection plan -title "Primadona" m-entrance-p m-galerija_branch-p m-ttt_branch-p m-hammerhead_branch-p m-upside_down_area-p m-hallelujah_branch-p m-klic_globin_branch-p m-old_slov_route-p m-deep-p endmap Is it possible to use the revise command (or anything else) to modify this from a config file? source map with-offsets -projection plan m-all-p@primadonna endmap revise m-all-p@primadonna m-deep-p@primadonna [-300 0 m] below endrevise endsource select with-offsets language en export map -projection plan -o out.pdf I found that it is possible to _add_ offsets to a map using the revise command, but so far haven't seen a way to modify a submap (the effect of which is that you see both the offset and the non-offset and the non-offset is not a preview). I guess the proper way to do this is just to define many maps with different offsets for all situations but for reasons I'd really like it if this method was possible somehow. Thanks, Rhys

Extended elevation direction opposite to sketch (TopParser and PocketTopo export to Therion)
by Bruce Mutton 08 Mar '22

08 Mar '22

Has anyone come across this issue with changes in direction of extended elevations, when PocketTopo files are processed with TopParser or exported to Therion? ie, the centreline developing in the opposite direction to the original sketch? The extended elevation is OK in PocketTopo, but regardless of the method used to parse it to Therion, the second part of the survey extends the wrong way in the xvi file. In this file, station 1.0 is where the survey started, first downstream, then we went back to station 1.0 and continued upstream. The second part of the survey has the legs 'flipped' so that they extend left. I eventually worked around this by deleting the downstream legs. Now the second set of legs starting from station 1.0 correctly extend left. I'm wondering if this behaviour is due to having two 'branches' of survey legs extending from the first station in the survey, 1.0, with one extending right, and the other left? Perhaps this is a limitation or bug with the code that parses from .top to .xvi (for both TopParser and 'Therion method')? Bruce

Updated XTherion editor side panel adjustment
by Bruce Mutton 28 Feb '22

28 Feb '22

I’m liking the (slightly) new look XTherion. Just one thing, with the smaller and finer linework and points, and I guess a not so large 4K monitor, shaky hands and poor eyesight, I’m finding it quite hard to reliably get my cursor close enough to existing points for it to snap onto them. I expect there may be a variable I could edit in XTherion.ini (or is XTherion.new.ini, there seems to be one of each) that will increase the snapping distance. If so, what is the variable name? (and how to use?)
