Help with extended elevation drawing
by Elfi Hristova 10 Nov '22

10 Nov '22

Hi I am asking for help with extend elevation of a section in a map I am drawing. I have 3 surveys that join in a loop. I want to extend from the place where I have rope but it will not work. On the picture this is station 99. I tried with: extend ignore 33 34 @map1, (I get error “Number is too large.. .some numbers” when compiling) extend ignore 0 1 @mapConnections (does nothing) extend start 99 @map2 (does nothing) equates are: 99@map1 99@map2, 0@map3 100@map2 34@map1 0@mapConenction 1@mapConnection 3@map3 Could somebody please point me what is the correct order of extend commands so the drawing can continue from station 99, not 34? Thanks, Efi

Scrap flip horizontal breaks join line point functionality bug
by Bruce Mutton 30 Oct '22

30 Oct '22

I have a bug, whereby manual joining of line points will fail (ie manual as described here https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/tips?s[]=join#joining_scraps_together <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/tips?s%5b%5d=join#joining_scraps_together> ) The trigger is when one of the scraps has -flip horizontal set and the other does not. I have not tested flip vertical. Seems to occur whether :0, :end, :<point number> or :mark syntax is used. As an example, for extended elevation where the yellow scrap (s8) is drawn so that -flip = none, and the blue scrap (s3) is drawn so that -flip = horizontal With no joins in effect: Syntax used: join 3-s8topstring@Hawkes:0 3-s3topstring@Hawkes:end It looks like I have joined the wrong end of one of the lines, but I have not. But there is a workaround that is sometimes successful - specify the opposite end of the line in the flipped scrap, to that which you want. join 3-s8topstring@Hawkes:0 3-s3topstring@Hawkes:0 The above example has properly joined both the scraps (semi-automatic join of s8 and s3) and joined both the red lines using manual joins where the 'opposite end' of the lines in the flipped scrap has been specified. So I have made it work out OK in this example, but is a nasty workaround. I have tried defining marks for the points that I want to join, but this bug persists even if you define custom marks. Joining scraps is not affected though, join scrapflipnone scrapfliphorz will work just fine. In the example above, join 3-HawkesElevEXT-s8@Hawkes 3-HawkesElevEXT-s3@Hawkes produces a perfect join for the scrap walls, but as expected not of the internal lines. My hypothesis: When it comes to joining line points, the point numbering and point mark association is messed up (reversed?) when (at least?) one of the scraps has -flip horizontal set. Bruce

shapefiles and encodings...
by Xavier Robert 19 Oct '22

19 Oct '22

Hi all, I have an other question about shapefiles produced by Therion. In my language (french), we are using accentuated characters. For that, In Therion : all my files begin with ‘encoding utf-8’. encoding-default and encoding-sql in therion.ini are set up tp UTF-8 (in /usr/local/etc and $HOME) (but therion --print-init-file still gives ASCII as encodings…) I am exporting shapefiles with the line : export map -proj plan -fmt esri -o MyOutput -layout my_layout -enc UTF-8 When I load the point2d.shp in QGis, QGis tells me that the encoding of the shapefile is utf-8. But, when I edit the attribut table, in the _TEXT field, I still have strange signs in place of the accentuated characters. For instance, I do not read « Vers S. Chatière », but 'Vers S. Chatière’. Does someone have an idea to correct this behavior and get the right encoding ? Cheers, Xavier

Therion shp exports
by Xavier Robert 17 Oct '22

17 Oct '22

Hi all, A friend and me are presently working on shp files exported by Therion to produce a GIS database usable through Android or iOS devices to be used directly on the field. We begin to have several points/problems/suggestions : In the station3d.shp, no altitude/depth are natively in the attribute table. Could is be possible to add it directly when exporting with Therion ? In the shapefile points2d.shp : in the point « continuation », all the attr are added to the attribute table, but the option -text is not. I suppose this is a bug, could it be add, please ? In the point « altitude », the value is not in the attribute table. I could add it with a post-process script, by it would be great if this is already done directly by Therion during export ! Is that possible ? In the point « Height », the value give in « -value » option is not written in the attribute table. Is it possible to add it during Therion export ? For all the point, the points, the scale option value is also absent from the attribute table. Is it also possible to add it during Therion export ? Also, to have a clean GIS working map, we need to post-process areas and lines to cut most of them with the outline, just to render what is inside the outline. I do not know if this is possible or not to do it natively inside Therion, if yes, it could be great. Otherwise, I will share my script for those interested in. Also, we are working on a QGIS style environnement with Therion symbology, I will share it when it will be ready ! Cheers, Xavier

Export survey data to kml including LRUD data?
by Torsten Schnitter 07 Oct '22

07 Oct '22

Hi all Is it possible to export a kml file from the survey data including the LRUD data? I use this code to get a kml file which is only the survey line then: export model -fmt kml -o filename.kml But what I want to get is a kml like the xvi file where you have not only the line plot but also the left and right messurements. So you can see better the dimension of the cave passage. This is the xvi export from survey data with LRUD and I want to get a similar output as a kml file: I know once you have drawn the the walls for the cave map you can export this map to a kml file. But I want to get a kml file with LRUD just from the survey data (without drawn any line for a map). Thanks for your help. Cheers, Torsten

Mapiah and WTherion
by Bruce Mutton 15 Sep '22

15 Sep '22

I've been dabbling with WTherion, and while it is progressing well and looking very good in many respects, it is flagged as a sort term interim project (on Matrix <https://app.element.io/#/room/> ) and I see some high-level challenges: * it seems a document must be saved in three places for it to be an enduring part of a mapping project: * a browser cache (required, and visible only to a particular browser on a particular device) * a json file (if you want to store or share the document (presumably) without loss of fidelity) * a th2 file (if you wish to compile the document using Therion) * In a multi-user project, unless everyone uses the workflow [WTherion open json, edit, export th2, compile Therion] there will be loss of fidelity. ie if some users choose [XTherion open th2, edit, compile Therion] then the WTherion users must 'know' to import from th2. This will result in loss of fidelity, especially where there are xvi files in the th2. For me multi-user and version-controlled storage are prerequisites for any mapping projects, and because it seems for most users, (readers of this forum excepted of course) both Therion and version control are significant challenges, any drawing editor should fit seamlessly into the existing Therion environment. Most likely this means it should read and write th2 files natively. Please tell me if I am wrong. As a self-taught dabbler I am only too happy to be shown the error in my thinking. Anyway, I got to thinking about Mapiah. I think the development for Mapiah is here and was last updated in February? https://gitlab.com/rsevero1/mapiah/-/releases I installed 0.0.3 and it looks like it is still in the very early stages. Is it still under consideration for further development? Bruce

sd for a vertical pole
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 08 Sep '22

08 Sep '22

Hi folks, I guess this could just as easily be a Survex question as a Therion question. I have GPS readings taken on a pole, with the position being given for the top of the pole. Subsequent Disto readings are taken from the bottom of the pole. The pole is brought to vertical using a spirit level. I have checked the accuracy of the spirit as being 0.125°. I have the (measured) standard deviations of the GPS positions, so I can specify the standard deviations for the location fix. What I need to work out is how to specify the standard deviation for the pole. It's not a plumb measurement, because it is not purely gravitational. So although I could use "DOWN" that is not actually accurate, since it is really a nearly-vertical measurement depending on the accuracy of the spirit level. It's really a length and clinometer reading. #length of the pole accuracy measurements sd length 0.001 metres #accuracy of the spirit level sd clino 0.125 degrees But when working with a supposedly vertical position, even the slightest error in the clinometer angle of the pole could cause the compass bearing to flip to any angle at all. But this seems extreme: sd compass 360 degrees So what would be the right way to specify it? Cheers, Tarquin

More on showing only some cross-sections
by Bill Gee 01 Sep '22

01 Sep '22

A few weeks ago I asked about the possibility of creating a map where only some of the cross-sections are shown. It is easy to include or leave out ALL cross-sections, but I would like a way to include only a dozen or so. No one had any usable answers. There was one suggestion about using macros, but not enough detail for me to figure out how to investigate it. It occurs to me that perhaps some of the cross-sections could be put in a custom group or context. So my first questions: Is it possible to create a group or a context? Can I add more than one group or context to a symbol such as a cross-section? Next is a related question. The owner of the cave I am working on is considering creation of a publication of photos they can sell in their gift shop. I think a very useful addition to such a book would be a map showing where the photos were taken. I can, of course, add labels anywhere on the map. The problem is that I want to be able to make maps which do NOT include the photo location symbols. So my next set of questions: Is there a symbol that might be used to indicate location and direction of a photo? Is there a way to group those symbols so they can be left out with something like "symbol-hide group photos"? This might all be more easily done with custom attributes. The Therion Book has only a few short lines about them. Is there more documentation or perhaps some sample code as to how they might be used? And my last question is more general. Is there a list of the predefined contexts and groups? Thanks! =============== Bill Gee
