I am struggling to connect the new section with this old section. The new section starts in a deep section of the cave and is far away from any of my currently defined points. What is the easiest way to connect the new and old sections? Steve As other contributors have noted, you need centreline data from your entrance fixed points to the start of your new section. There are only two ways to do this: Run a rapid centreline survey through the cave to the start of the new sections & hang everything off that. Or Digitise the old survey. I have successfully used Larry Fish's "Map to Dat" utility from "Compass" to do this, though you then have the irritation of converting Compass data to Therion (not difficult, just irritating). Both of these approaches work OK when producing 3D models, but I have found them rather less satisfactory when producing drawings as far various reasons the old drawings never seem quite 'right'. A third approach is to hunt down the original surveyors and see if the notes really have been lost or just left in a drawer somewhere. If the latter, rejoice, if the former then, well, smearing them with honey & lowering them into a pit of tiger ants seems about right. Alternatively, you could just bite the bullet & resurvey the whole system from scratch, we've had to do this once or twice & some of the largest systems in the UK have been/are being completely redone for these reasons. If you do take this path then please just ensure that your data is archived properly so no-one else is faced with the same problem in another 30 years or so. Graham

Hi, I just re-installed XP Pro on a laptop, updated everything, installed Therion and I get the following error. This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect.Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. I'm running Therion on two other XP machines with no problems.I have looked everywhere for an answer with no luck. What have I missed, any ideas. Thanks, Nick Bairstow

Translation of Therion into simplified Chinese.
by Duncan Collis 09 Feb '15

09 Feb '15

Hi, I've been assisting with a translation of Therion into Simplified Chinese together with Zhang Yuanhai of the Institute of Karst Geology in Guilin. I've got a few questions about some of the text to translate, mostly relating to the context in which it will be used. In some cases I hope you'll just confirm what I already think, but I would like to be sure. Incidentally, I think that it would assist future translators of Therion if textx.txt and xtexts.txt contained comments to clarify the meaning in a few cases. I would be happy to add comments based on your replies to the questions below, if you just tell me what format they should be in. Thanks, Duncan. texts.txt There are a few texts which lack any translations, e.g. therion: point stalactites therion: point stalagmites therion: point pillars Are translations needed for these? xtexts.txt Some texts end with a period, e.g. therion: Therion command line options. therion: Run therion. therion: PDF file path. therion: Survey informations. and several others. What is the significance of this? therion: OK Please confirm that this 'OK' indicates normal completion, rather than inviting confirmation. therion: \nerror opening therion.log file\n What is '\n' ? Some translations have /n instead - is this a mistake or are they different? therion: Undo %s What is '%s' ? Is the space before it important? Some texts seem to be shorthand for something much longer, e.g. therion: Action button. en: After clicking this button, you can insert objects by mouse. Click on action to see menu. However, it is inconsistent whether translations into other languages are translations of the therion: text or the much longer en: text. Which is preferred? Many texts include a verb ending with -ing, e.g. therion: zooming therion: dragging image therion: moving command therion: creating endscrap therion: creating scrap therion: creating text therion: creating point therion: inserting scrap sketch therion: deleting scrap sketch therion: inserting image therion: removing image therion: moving image therion: deleting line point therion: inserting area border therion: deleting area border therion: creating area therion: creating line therion: inserting line point therion: moving control point therion: Opening %s ... therion: Saving %s ... therion: Processing line %s ... Do these appear in the status bar to indicate the an action currently taking place? therion: line closing therion: line opening therion: line ending These have a slightly different form - are they used differently from the other -ing texts? What is the difference between line closing and line ending? therion: To set file encoding, type encoding name and press <Change> button I can't find a corresponding text for the Change button. Which is it? therion: Save as therion: Import Should this text end with '...' ? Some translations do, some don't. Also, is there any reason for the different symbols used for '.' in different translations? therion: theme basic-symbols therion: theme passage-fills therion: theme speleothems therion: theme equipement How are these used?

Google Earth Pro
by Steve Clark 02 Feb '15

Just a quick note to say Google have just removed the fee from the Google Earth Pro licence (previously $400). This has a few features that are not available in normal google earth, including some export options and the ability to record movie fly-by's and zooms. I hoped it would allow the import of 3d .kml profiles which could be viewed in through a semi-transparent terrain. Unfortunately, it doesn't. You can, however, view the 3d .kml (for centrelines) for all altitudes above 0m (sea level) as follows : Turn of the 'terrain' rendering in the 'Layers' box (unavailable in normal google earth) Open up the 'Therion KML Export' in the Temporary Places section by clicking the small arrow. Right click on the three small dots and bring up the properties box. Select the altitude tab and change from 'Clamped to Ground' to 'Absolute' You can now view a cave centreline in 3d, hovering above the aerial photography. Steve Clark
