plan cross-section
by marco corvi 24 Jun '11

seems that cross-section scrap must have a projection `none', which means that therion cannot use stations to scale it "properly". i had to draw a vertical cave, a sequence of pits, one on top of the next. instead of drawing a plan, with plenty of maps shifted to the side, i preferred to draw plan cross-sections nearby the shafts as cross-sections (with a section line marking their position on the pit). i would also like to have one north symbol on the map, to mark the orientation of all the plan cross-sections. i did it fiddling with the sources, but a "more stable" solution is appreciated. thanks for the help, marco

map-bg transparent
by Bruce 23 Sep '10

23 Sep '10

On the topic of maps within maps. Therion inserts images with transparent backgrounds into maps correctly - at least it has worked for me. Is it possible to get therion to create a map with a transparent background? Something like 'map-bg off' perhaps? This would be useful sometimes when inserting map enlargements within a main map output. Bruce

Re: [Therion] Paperless Cave Survey with DistoX, PocketTopo and Therion

Bruce Thanks for your explanations. At Sun, 31 Jan 2010 14:24:11 +1300, Bruce Mutton wrote: > It is documented, but on searching just now I discovered it is quite hard to > find. If I understand that correctly, PocketTopo is still completely closed and the file format not documented. Also from reading your comments, the PDA software seems to be quite inflexible (first splay shots, then next target). Since I am also considering going that route, these seem to be severe limitations. Working together with people using PocketTopo, it is quite inconvenint not to have true Therion *.th files with the full set of measurements, but just processed data. It would be great to be able to write a *.top conversion utility, but for that the file format needs to known. Best, Martin

Associating thconfig extension with Wish Application causes bad option utf-8 on some machines
by Bruce 03 Sep '10

03 Sep '10

For the last few years I have been adding a non-'therion'-standard extension to thconfig files, eg thconfig.thc so that I can open them in XTherion directly from the Windows File Explorer. The first time this is attempted an association needs to be made with 'Wish Application', but thereafter it works smoothly, well at least most of the time. I have described my rudimentary understanding of this here. http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=windows <http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=windows&s%5b%5d=modify&s%5b%5d=di stinguish&s%5b%5d=layout> &s[]=modify&s[]=distinguish&s[]=layout A while back I installed Therion on a Windows 7 machine and got an error similar to the image below. bad option "utf-8": must be convertfrom, convertto, names, or system while executing "encoding utf-8" (file "D:\Therion\....thconfig-Flora.thc" line 1) I assumed it was due to some difference between Windows 7 and Windows XP, upsetting the implementation of the tcl scripts, however I had the same problem recently with an old Windows XP machine (older that my current 2006 machine). So perhaps something else is going on. On a particular machine it will either always work, or never work. Any ideas how I might overcome the problem on the machines where this technique does not work? Bruce

new snapshot
by Martin Budaj 23 Jul '10

23 Jul '10

Hi all, new snapshot is available. Changes include: * Austrian symbol set is implemented (just use "copy AUT" in your layout to activate it). * New coordinate system OSGB:ST is added (Andrew, please test it -- if it works fine, we will include other squares as well) Other news is that after a spam attack we decided to change editing policy for wiki pages. Editing is now allowed only for registered users (some of the users are already registered; for those who are not we will publish registration instructions soon). Martin

Coloured symbols - centrelines and gridlines
by Bruce 23 Jul '10

23 Jul '10

Hi Just been trying to add a bit of colour and have a few comments, questions. symbol-colour group cave-centreline [0 100 0] # only affects the centrelines. It does not affect the colour of survey stations or survey station labels. It seems to me that stations are part of the centreline (otherwise why make it 'group centreline' when 'line centreline' would suffice?) and so the group setting should affect all items associated with the survey stations and centreline. It should behave similarly for surface surveys. Adding. symbol-colour point cave-station [0 100 0] # does not affect the colour of survey station points, and I would expect it to. symbol-colour point station [0 100 0] # changes the station point colour as well as entrance 'omega' symbol and any text associated with it. symbol-colour point station-name [0 100 0] # changes the station-name label colours. The later two do not distinguish between surface and cave surveys however. Comments? Are these features, bugs, works in progress? And this next one is one I've been too lazy to research. Is there a way to control the colour of gridlines (both in plan and elevation) and the labels associated with each? I have managed to do it for plan gridlines with metapost and have been meaning to research for the elevation gridlines & plan and elevation grid labels but have not got around to it to date. Perhaps symbol-colour special grids [80 80 80] or symbol-colour group grids [80 80 80] would be a convenient way to implement it? Bruce

Size of pdf error when final pdf size should be OK
by Bruce 21 Jul '10

21 Jul '10

I'm having a problem with creating pdf plan maps of a smallish area (about 1 km x 1.5km) with a source surface image covering about 5km x 7 km. For a cave in one particular corner (near bottom left) of the larger image it works fine at a scale 1:1000. (It was giving problems with the map produced being much bigger than the cave extent, but Stacho (or was it Martin?) fixed this bug for me.) For another cave elsewhere on the image (sort of top centre) I get the error reported in the scale 1 1000 log file attached, and no output. For this other cave it compiles fine if the surface image is off, or if the surface image is on and the scale is 1:2000 as in the attached scale 1 2000 log file. (Use a text comparator to spot the differences in the two attachments). If I debug the problem run and check the intermediate data.pdf file produced, the cave is plotted on the wrong part of the surface image, but is otherwise perfect. Perhaps the error is due to the size of the pdf page produced as part of an intermediate step, as the final pdf page is well within the 5m size limit. In all cases I am using 'rotate 70' so that may be adding a small complication. Any ideas what is going on? Is my guess as to the case likely to be correct? Might it be possible to get a 1:1000 output (1.5m long) without chopping my overall source image into smaller pieces? After all, it works in one case and not another. Regards Bruce

"Colour by date"
by Graham Mullan 14 Jul '10

14 Jul '10

Colour by date can sometimes be a useful tool for viewing 3d files in Aven, especially when viewing to different datasets for the same passage in parallel. However, 3d files generated by Therion, as opposed to Survex, don't seem to support this feature. There does not seem to be a similar feature in Lox. Might it be possible to implement this at some point? Graham --- graham.mullan(a)coly.org.uk 0117 9502556 or 07887 637064 (or try 0844 2327803)

Hello Dirk, it is a bug, that if you do not select any survey, no project title is shown in lox. I will try to fix it. But when you select survey to export, than that survey name should be shown in the project title. Example: If you have in your data: survey cave -title "My cave" And then in thconfig you will use: select cave export model than "My cave" should be shown in indicator area. HTH, S.
