***UNCHECKED*** Changing the legend icon for existing points/lines

Hi, When defining a custom line, you can create a sample to use in the legend: def l_u_foo (expr P) = ... enddef; initsymbol("l_u_foo"); def l_u_foo_legend = l_u_foo(((0,0)--(1,1)) inscale); enddef; Is there a way to do this for custom symbol sets? def p_anchor_MY (expr P) = ... enddef; initsymbol("p_anchor_MY"); def p_anchor_MY_legend = % rotate the symbol in the legend, since it looks better that way p_anchor_MY((0,0) inscale, 90, 1, (0,0)); enddef; This doesn't seem to work. Neither does "p_anchor_legend". Am I missing something; is there a way to do it? Cheers! Tarquin

Photo Overlay sharing Texinputs

It’s good to see that this is a viable option. For my projects I’m not yet ready to make the organisational changes and compromises it requires. I mainly want to include elevations in plans, both of which are produced in the same thconfig compile, and have less interest in other images. Since people have been thinking about it, perhaps someone can conceive another work around? To recap, my simplistic understanding is that using \def\maplayout{... overrides the default /legendcontent (map-header) positioning on the pdf. This means that for some reason we cannot use map-image to place pictures (including elevations etc) on the pdf. Therefore we have to use \loadpicture{_ with semi absolute paths to place pictures or other maps within our pdfs. Is there a way that we can prevent map-image from being disabled when we use \def\maplayout{...? This wiki entry hints at another option, but I have not made sense of it. There seems to be some key information missing. https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/tips?s[]=maplayout#map-image_and_custom_lege… <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/tips?s%5b%5d=maplayout#map-image_and_custom_…> Map-image and custom legendbox If you customise your legendbox in the tex-map section of your configuration file layout and use \def\maplayout{... } then map-image will not work. To work around this simply rename it as shown below \def\new_maplayout{ \legendbox{0}{100}{NW}{ \the\legendcontent } Could it be possible to retain the default \maplayout and set map-header <x> <y> off, retain its default map-image option using true relative paths, and define a new maplayout (with a different name) to position a scalebar, north arrow and a customised \legendcontent (map header)? ie Can two maplayouts exist and plot one over the other? I guess there might be a problem with the maps rendering twice, once for each maplayout. Seems like a silly question, but I had to ask it. Now I got it to work. :-) Hooray! This is my actual TEXINPUTS: TEXINPUTS = $TEXMF/tex;T:/Survey;.; Before the above I had this (which was not working): TEXINPUTS = $TEXMF/tex;T:/Survey//;.; Somewhere I read this // at the end of the path would include all subfolders while searching for the proper file from the loadpicture command. Beside this I did a second mistake. In the command \loadpicture{...} I always started the path with "./" or with "../" or with just "/". E.g.: \loadpicture{./CaveSystem/Image.jpg} But if you just start with the name of the subfolder than it works. So correct command in the thconfig in folder Cave-1 is: \loadpicture{_General/Logos/Image.jpg} You can have all your survey stuff in one top level folder. All needed survey data is in this top level folder. Just use relative paths everywhere in your config files. Finally add this top level folder to TEXINPUTS. With this you can transfer this file structure to every computer and all you have to do on another computer is: Add this top level folder to TEXINPUTS. Thanks again for your help. regards, Torsten

For Torsten: Photo Overlay sharing Texinputs

Hi Torsten, I made some instructions last night so that we could get this working on our project, so excuse the references, but you will get the idea. If anyone wants to tidy this up and put it on the Wiki then please feel free :) Some instructions on getting the photo overlays to work on your PC. You’ll need the onedrive as a file location on your PC. Mine is at: C:\Users\alastair\OneDrive\Tresviso2019\photo_overlay We need to point Therion to this file location To do this we need to go into the Therion programme files: In mine this is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Therion\texmf\web2c [cid:7dde4e17-affb-4460-b533-5de7d5e7f714] In here is a file called texmf.cnf We need to edit this file. It will look like this: [cid:c9eb0e55-dca1-47be-8d12-00cbe479bf86] We need to change the TEXINPUTS to point it to our onedrive file. TEXINPUTS = $TEXMF/tex;C:/Users/alastair/OneDrive/Tresviso2019/photo_overlay;. The semicolon and the dot at the end of this line are very important, as is the semicolon before the C directory. Saving this file doesn’t always work. Administrator privileges or something. If it doesn’t let you save it, save it somewhere else and either drag and drop it or copy and paste the file into the therion program files. C:\Program Files (x86)\Therion\texmf\web2c Now we should be able to get the Photo overlay to work on both our PC’s. And it will work across all of the different surveys. For completeness we are keeping the specific photo overlay tex file in the same file as the thconfig. The specific photo overlay is looking into the onedrive file and drilling down into the Marniosa file. http://cave-registry.org.uk/svn/Andara/Tresviso/Marniosa/therion/_photo_ove… As per Henry Bennett's suggestion the other week we are keeping the generic layouts and translations at a higher level. (I asked Henry whether I could borrow/steal a lot of his code from the speleophilippeans project and he was happy) cave-registry.org.uk/svn/Andara/XTherionFiles/ It is still work in progress but we're getting there. Regards, Alastair.

***UNCHECKED*** New symbols
by Bruce Mutton 28 Nov '19

> > 1. May want to reconsider the insertion (0,0) point of some points (wheelchair, drip and camera), although they might be OK also. The result shown in your "map -map-fg-gray - symbols centred on grid.pdf" file is exactly what I expected and wanted. What would you have in mind? Not a biggy, I just thought the camera and water drip could move up a bit so the insertion point is closer to the centroid of the bulk of the image. And wheelchair towards the upper right a bit. Also the walkway points are good if used in a plan view, but if they were inserted in an elevation, the insertion point should be down between the feet if the person. It is easy to make the metapost ‘projection aware’ so should be easy enough to do. This really is a minor quibble though. > 2. Points gate, no-wheelchair, water-drip, and possibly human-bone, danger should probably allow the foreground/background colour to show through. Of these I believe only gate should actually allow the background color to show through. I believe the others actually work better this way as I even created them with backgound color show through and changed them afterwards. I guess it is just a matter of style preferences. If we end up with a symbol set with lots of hard coded white backgrounds, that is fine. I just wonder if they will look out of place with the current prevailing style that has transparent symbol interiors. About the gate point: making background color show through is kind of a black magic in Metapost. As gate has several hollow spaces, it got harder than I thought it was worthwhile but it can definitely be done. > 3. Points with multiple speleothems do not handle rotation well. I think the existing Therion stalactites and stalagmites suffer from the same problem. You made 2 PDFs with rotated symbols. The first one has some symbols that seem off to me but the second one has the exact behaviour I want and expect. Was it created without any align option, isn't it? Options for these three images - Centred, centred and rotated, centred and rotated aligned right Left image is OK Middle image has rotated the individual parts of the symbol, which is wrong. It should rotate the symbol as a single unit. Righthand image has same problem as the middle image, and in addition you can see the parts are all moved down to the right. However the align option used was ‘right’ (I did not align the adjacent symbols, as doing that caused a crash, as I mentioned earlier). As far as I can see, it's all related to the order you choose to apply the transformations. I used the align before the rotate. If you move the align to be done after the rotate the behaviour changes. Maybe you could test a little bit and propose a better order for the transformations after testing several use cases. Yes, if you swap align and rotate, all becomes well. I did quite a lot of testing. Read all of this wiki section Symbol Sizing and Positioning <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/metapost#symbol_sizing_and_positioning> > 4. The picture based symbols have no U: definition, so they crash Therion with metapost exit code – 2 if you try to align them. They should have a reasonable U: parameter set. I applied the align parameter to several of them and got no error. Can you send a file where you see this issue? OK, the cause is perhaps not what I thought. Try rotating and aligning the tree trunk in line 67 of the attached. It at least causes the crash. All of the points in the preceding lines do not cause any problem. Maybe there are more problematic lines below that (short of time!) > 5. Points that can be aligned , have their (non-zero) rotation corrupted when they are both rotated and aligned. You can see in the example that the speleothem points have been aligned bottom-right, when the th2 file says they should be aligned right). This problem exists with all (almost) existing Therion points. I have identified the cause and proposed a solution here <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/metapost#symbol_sizing_and_positioning> https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/metapost#symbol_sizing_and_positioning but my metapost skills are very basic, so no doubt it could be improved upon. I'm not sure I fully understand your issue. The result for rotated and right aligned symbols seemed more intuitive to me when I inverted the align and the rotate transformations in symbols. I bet that would be a nice change but I wonder if you are talking about something more subtle that I have not fully understood yet. I think you have understood what I am referring to. The situation where this is most apparent and vexing in a real cave drawing is when using a point water-flow, or point air-draught entering or leaving a passage (perpendicular to a wall). You want to align the symbol so that it plots correctly at a variety of scales, but invoking the alignment makes it displace in entirely the wrong direction. It at first appears to be random, because it depends entirely on the value of the rotation option. But this is a live problem (bug) for almost every point symbol currently in Therion. Re: [Therion] How to rotate XVI?

Thanks for the comprehensive answers Torsten I was a little disappointed that the surface ‘line’ turns out to be a clever adaption of a long skinny ‘area’, but it is effective I suppose. I seem to recall there was a conversation about creating a line with shading along one side recently… That would be easier for the draughtsperson if someone has solved that one. All the same, I think I may use your method one day. The legend scaling is interesting, and I see now that you posted this previously. I wonder if a similar approach could be taken to scaling all the passage cross sections, with a simple ‘switch’? I guess your \def\maplayout{ also contains a couple of \loadpicture statements, one for the Hidden river logo and one for the elevation. Are you using absolute paths to specify the file to load, or environment variables? I am interested in ways to make it easier for projects that are used with version control across a number of different versioned branches and computer systems. I have not got the time to experiment, but if the environment variable has to point to the exact folder (as this page implies https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/tex#changing_the_look_or_layout_of_a_map_out…) I can imagine it becomes unworkable on a computer system with dozens of cave projects, each comprising a number of caves. This post by Martin B <https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg05519.html> in 2015 suggests we can define a root folder with an environment variable, and then spell out an absolute path relative to that. Unfortunately if one uses a version control system that stores different development branches in different folders, both approaches are even more problematic. Sorry that this thread is rambling around topics that bear little relation to the original message. Hi I got the answer for rotation XVI file already from Stephen Clark. In the end it's easy and as Alastair also mentioned: export map -fmt xvi -proj [elevation 45 deg] -o .... Concerning the questions from Bruce: 1. Ground profile You have to export a kml file from your passages. But only these survey lines you would like to have the surface profile from. There is a website where you can transform this kml data to surface data. You will get an endless list with stations and added surface altitude. The website is www.gpsvisualizer.com <http://www.gpsvisualizer.com> I can't remember how to get the final file but there was still some work to do on that file. In the end you need a file like this to generate a XVI file from that: survey centreline date .... cs lat-long walls off mark temporary flags surface fix 1 44.1234567 1.345678 123.4 .... more fix stations .... data nosurvey from to 1 2 2 3 ..... endcentreline endsurvey 2. Code for the surface line: scrap line wall -id surface_line -outline none -clip off ... endline line border -id lower_line -subtype invisible -clip off ... endline area u:surface_grey -clip off surface_line lower_line endarea endscrap The code for area surface_grey is attached to this mail. (I'm not realy sure anymore about all the "-clip off" !?) 3. Text boxes and layout changes This is a bit more complex. I will put this infos into an extra email later. Just give me some time to sort it out and to make it "readable" for everyone. regards, Torsten Bruce Mutton <bruce(a)tomo.co.nz <mailto:bruce@tomo.co.nz> > hat am 25. Would you share the code for that? 3. I like the layout of the text information boxes. Would you share an example of the code for those? Rodrigo Looks like you have just become the symbol man! Just giving these a quick test and critical review. Have a look at and compare the attached sample maps. 1. May want to reconsider the insertion (0,0) point of some points (wheelchair, drip and camera), although they might be OK also. 2. Points gate, no-wheelchair, water-drip, and possibly human-bone, danger should probably allow the foreground/background colour to show through. 3. I have identified the cause and proposed a solution here https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/metapost#symbol_sizing_and_positioning but my metapost skills are very basic, so no doubt it could be improved upon. Many of these points would not usually be rotated, but alignment is something that I expect should be used often. However, I think it is reasonable that all points should accept this combination of transformations gracefully. Bruce

Tarquin No answer to your question, but to check that have seen these. I looked at a similar thing a while ago. You have probably found this thread https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg07234.html Search for 'boxed label'. Sorry I have no time to figure out where I got to, I was going to write it up but did not get to it. Also the wiki has some discussion of alignment and rotation of symbols https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/metapost#symbol_sizing_and_positioning (down the page just a little). My theory is that most Therion point symbols are defined so that alignments plot incorrectly if they also have a rotation applied. ie T:=identity aligned A rotated R scaled S shifted P; aligns your symbol, then rotates your alignment! and T:=identity rotated R aligned A scaled S shifted P; rotates your symbol, then applies the (correct) alignment. Yes, both labels and arrows seem to be quite complicated, and interrelated with other features. How to suppress station name prefix?
by Benedikt Hallinger 25 Nov '19

25 Nov '19

Hello, my stations all follow the syntax „n.m“, like 1.28, 1.29, 2.1, 2.2 and so on. I have some larger maps where only the first prefix (1.m) ever occurs. Is there a way to supress the prefix when needed without tinkering with the data? I think in the direction of overloading the station name symbol but dont know how to code this in metapost... How to rotate XVI?
by Torsten Schnitter 25 Nov '19

25 Nov '19

Hello I have a cave system in a plan view and also an elevation view from the main passage. This main passage is heading west-east. Both maps are compiled into one final map. (http://www.thehiddenriverproject.org/downloads/Reseau_de_lOuysse_Copyright.…) Beside that I would like to add a side passage which is heading let's say north-south also in elevation view into the final map. Therefore I would like to draw an elevation map of only this side passage with point of viewing from west to east. I selected all the measured survey lines from only this side passage and wanted to have the resulting (elevation) XVI file rotated 45 degree (counterclock wise). I do get a correct XVI file with only the side passage but not rotated. I tried to use a layout for the XVI export and within that I used the "rotate" command. But it didn't work: select line.... select line.... export map -fmt xvi -proj elevation -layout layout_xvi -o .... layout_xvi scale 1 200 units metric rotate -45 endlayout Is it possible to get a rotated XVI file (elevation view)? regards, Torsten
