ESRI model problem
by Dave Clucas 27 Mar '12

27 Mar '12

I'm having problems with GIS data output. If I export a kml model it appears in Google Earth in the correct place. If I import the kml into QGIS it appears in the correct place. cs is UTM50. However, if I export an ESRI model it appears in QGIS about 500 kms to the NE o.f where it should be. Dave Clucas dave(a)daveclucas.com http://daveclucas.com http://mycaves.org

Re: [Therion] Labyrinth GUI
by Juan Corrin 21 Mar '12

Just to expand a few cents ... The lines / points / areas concepts and parameters available through a GUI at F2 with drop-down choices for drawing the scraps - that's great, we understood and used that. That is not the issue. However, the windows presented at F1 and F3 require the new user 1: to learn / understand writing a language - the commands and parameters - from scratch. 2: to learn / understand in which screen each command / parameters and definitions and extra code should go. The new user is expecting to get hands-on with drawing up within a few minutes, not having to copy/paste and write code before getting any sensible output. The GUI for the F3 screen could, for example, present the user with drop-down boxes for setting up all the required outputs and customising layout etc etc. The new user is a caver who wants to produce a survey, then more complicated surveys/maps then a geographical area with surveys/maps - obviously this takes time to learn but the learning process is hampered by having to (unnecessarily) learn the language syntax and the parameters. He/she knows what output scale to use, what symbol set to use, what size printout/pdf is expected etc but having to find the code to porgramme the application is frustrating. None of the above comments stops more advanced users (big project coordinators) from "getting under the bonnet". [My background: 40 years of surveying and drawing surveys through sin / cos tables to Survex / DistoX / Therion etc. Organising and coordinating the Matienzo Caves expeditions to Cantabria. Here, new passage is being found in known or new sites all the time. Much surveying is required which needs organising from single cave surveys through to showing centre lines/surveys over the whole permit area (and beyond!) on contoured maps, Google Earth etc. (Many years ago, I wrote a cave survey programme for the Archimedes which processed survey data and showed the centre line growing on-screen - but we then had to switch to PCs. There are currently more than 3600 entrances (including many digs) and more than 325km of passage. Most surveys are now drawn up in Corel Draw, some in Inkscape, and Footleg is producing a 54km cave network survey in Tunnel.] Anything to encourage cavers to produce a final output, ie a friendly front end to Therion, would be superb. Multi-line labels
by Juan Corrin 16 Mar '12

Why doesn't this line point 319.0 -392.0 label -text "MAIN<BR>ENTRANCE" extracted from a th2 file produce a 2-line label? I seem to have tried all combinations of <BR> </BR>, (not) enclosed in quotes etc.

Check please the Toporobot manual about numbering of stations and of numbering rules. PocketTopo follows these rules exactly. http://www.geo.uzh.ch/~heller/toporobot/English/Manual/ToporobotMethod.html it is in German, but with pictures. There is new page of Toporobot, but it is still empty: www.toporobot.net m.

PocketTopo Exported data image import bug
by Footleg 16 Mar '12

16 Mar '12

I do not seem to be able to get the attached PocketTopo therion export format data file to import into the map editor properly. Using Therion 5.3.9. The xvi either fails to be inserted, or appears without the survey centreline and stations. I have not had this problem with other data files. Could it be the overall size of this sketch? Footleg

Labyrinth GUI
by Juan Corrin 13 Mar '12

13 Mar '12

Any news about the proposed Labyrinth GUI? Having just been one of 7 expertly inducted into the pleasures of Therion by Andrew Atkinson over the weekend, it became obvious early in the course that a GUI is essential. Drop down boxes to choose parameters would be greatly appreciated. I'd certainly offer to be a beta tester.

drawing map over xvi: best practices requested
by Vasily Vl. Suhachev 08 Mar '12

08 Mar '12

Hello Possible two workflow for drawing map over xvi: First: 1) integrate new centerline in whole cave (loops closed) 2) process whole cave and export xvi 3) draw over xvi 2) process map Second: 1) process only new centerline and export xvi (no loops) 2) draw over xvi 3) integrate new centerline in whole cave (loops closed) 4) process map Pros/Contras for each approach? Maybe possible another right way? -- WBR, Vasily
