Meaning of cavelength
by Maximillian Dornseif 04 Mar '12

I might understand something wrong, but it seems to me, that what is called `cavelength` in Therion is actually the length of all centerlines. This might correspondent to the cave length in straight caves but certainly not in labyrinth like caves. I was told about the "Kluterthöhle" in germany which was surveyed in the 60ies to ca. 5900 m and then resurveyed and recalculated - to have only a length of 5200 m or so. This is for on the one hand a problem with circular shots inside big rooms, like http://filez.foxel.org/3s3H0d2X361A0K222Z3N An other problem are crossroads like http://filez.foxel.org/1t0C0r2Q011i0g1L0i00 where you can't young the shared area of two passages twice but must - at least to what I have been thought - deduct some part of the centerlines: in the following picture I have marked the parts being considered cavelength yellow and the centerlines not counting as part of the cavelength red https://img.skitch.com/20120221-jhraj625isy8j1i9naxiki3b76.png Certainly I'm not the first person stumbling about this. What is the preferred way to approach the calculation of cave lengths? Regards Maximillian

kml file name field request
by Bruce 29 Feb '12

29 Feb '12

I'm assuming there is a bug fix coming along for kml files to remove the extra whitespace that is upsetting the coordinates in Google Earth these days The kml files start out like this. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.0"> <Document> <name>Therion KML export </name> <description>Therion KML export.</description> <Placemark> . I'd like to request that the <name> and <description> fields be modified as follows; For export map, <name> = cavename (from code tex-map), or 'Cave Map' if cavename is undefined. <description> = mapcomment, or perhaps 'Therion map compiled <date>' if there is no mapcomment. I'm not sure if layouts are used for kml map exports, so not sure if it is possible, but this would allow them to match their pdf etc counterparts. Using layouts and code tex-map would allow user defined modifications. For export model, <name> = unique survey name or 'Cave Survey Centreline' if there is no unique survey name. <description> = 'Therion survey compiled <date>' or a better description if someone can think of one. Regards Bruce

Orientation of symbol fills
by Footleg 28 Feb '12

28 Feb '12

Can someone please tell me how to change the orientation that an area fill symbol is drawn using? I am trying to make my flowstone fill indicate the direction it flows in. I've searched the wiki, email group archive and thbook for an answer to this with no luck. Just some reference to rotating fills being possible without saying how in an email from the list in 2007. Infinite loop in therion 5.3.9
by Bertrand HAUSER 27 Feb '12

27 Feb '12

Hi, I have an infinite loop with Therion 5.3.9 on Ubuntu. I have to kill the processus to stop it. When I look to the Therion tmp working directory, there is a big file (some Go if I don't stop fastly) witch name is : th_pagedef.tex The begining of this file is in attachment. The infinite loop repeat this ending line : \PL{q}\PL{1.00 0.03 -0.03 1.00 -nan -inf cm}\PB{0}{0}{\THWgrida}\PL{Q}% I don't understand tex language... In attachment, the zip file with the file I compile. Sorry for my english, Bertrand

No other OSGB areas have been included, as yet.

What is exactly "extended elevation"?
by Maximillian Dornseif 27 Feb '12

27 Feb '12

It may be a stupid question but is "extended elevation" a well known term I just don't know ("e.g. unrolled intersection") or is it just an "elevation plot with extender features." I studied the Therion Book but I still have the feeling I'm missing something. Regards --md

Recommendations for the best way to define areas
by Footleg 22 Feb '12

22 Feb '12

My instinct when drawing is to define an area with lines drawn exactly defining the area, each line starting at the same point as the last line ends. So I split my wall lines at the points where I want the area border to join the wall, and drawn border lines between points on the walls. This looks neater to me. But I realise that this is not required because you can just overlap the border lines across the walls to define the area, and any fill will be clipped by the walls anyway. So what I am wondering is are there any advantages to one method over the other? See the attached bitmap illustrating areas defined in the two different ways I just described. (Left side shows overlapped lines not joined at points. Right side shows neater area defined exactly by bounding lines.) Footleg

Centerline and sizes above walls
by Marco Menchise 20 Feb '12

20 Feb '12

Hello, I'm a Therion newbie, and I have a (maybe trivial) question. I have survey data of a cave (eg, distance, compass, clino, left, backleft, right backrigt, up, down) and I'm able to plot the centerline and sizes. I also learned how to plot walls using the sketches (I do plot walls on the sketch, then I "morph" the sketch). Now I wish to obtain the plant or the elevation profiles with the walls *and* the centerline and sizes (the best thing should be to have them overlayed but with some transparency), to verify how correctly I draw the walls based only on the sketches. Is it possibile? If I plot the walls I miss the cave sizes. To have the cave size drawn I usually comment out the input directive; in such way no scraps are included and I'm able to plot the centerline and transversal sizes, but I cannot compare to walls... I deeply searched the docs with no luck. Thanks, Marco
