Re: [Therion] Compass .plt export problem

I recently noticed that Compass .plt exports miss georeferencing data, as long I know. Is possible to add this feature? Area working in file but not in overall
by Andrew Atkinson 20 Oct '12

I am a little puzzled by this one. I have and area sand that when I compile the file (FrozenDeep) by itself works and shows up, but when compiled within the cave (reservoir) does not show up, however as far as I can tell all the other sand areas are working fine? I would be most grateful if someone could help solve this problem for me. I am using a custom (from the thrion wiki) sand but I have changed the area to water to and the same thing plus not used the custom sand by not using my common_layout file. The data for the Frozendeep is at http://www.cave-registry.org.uk/svn/CheddarCatchment/Reservoir/FrozenDeep/ compiled using the thconfig file in there the whole cave is at http://www.cave-registry.org.uk/svn/CheddarCatchment/Reservoir/ Again, compiled using the thconfig file in there thanks Andrew

reposting from Survex
by Martin Sluka 13 Oct '12

Luc le Blanc: Hi, I'm currently implementing an export feature in Auriga to allow exporting cave data to files on the memory card in various native survey formats. Survex is among them, along with Compass, Therion, Toporobot, VisualTopo, Walls and plain-text CSV. I hope to ship this in October. I just started that less than a month ago, so it's been a quick intro to various formats. Here are a few observations regarding Survex. As I already told the Therion people (whose data format draws heavily on Survex's), if the backsight compass and clino can have their own units, they should also have their own calibration. And it makes much sense: if you take backsights, it's better to take them at the same time you take foresights in order to compare them and repeat as necessary until they agree, so you do need two sets of instruments, each with their own calibration. I'm told a future Survex version will support splay measures taken from a station to some non-station cave feature. It's a good thing as they are a wonderful help for sketching, akin to drawing by numbers :) Auriga implements them as additional measures hooked to regular survey shots (like additional LRUDs, but with a heading and slope), others, like Therion or Walls, support them as plain survey shots, albeit with a fake "to" station. Therion distinguishes between a splay shot to a wall/floor/ceiling and one to some cave feature while Auriga distinguishes between a splay measure to a wall, to the floor/ceiling or to some cave feature (the wall vs floor/ceiling distinction is much arbitrary but helps deciding which to pick to draw outlines in top view or profiles) Given that software evolves and new versions support new features, I'm surprised only one PC software (Visual Topo) implements a version number in its data format. Wouldn't it make sense that when new features are met by an old software version, it has the ability to tell the user this version is outdated? pdf title
by Andrew Atkinson 07 Oct '12

Hello At the moment the title of the pdf comes from the source th file So if survey CheddarCatchment the title is CheddarCatchment This can be improved by survey CheddarCatchment -title "The Cheddar Catchmet" however sometimes in the thconfig I only select a couple of caves so would like to change the title, which I can do, but it becomes a little tedious. I was wondering if I am missing something like a way to change the title in the layout. This would be very useful, as I tend to produce different thconfig files for my different outputs, but have the same th file, so I would not have to remember to edit the th file each time I run a different thconfig. I guess I could make a custom header box, but that seems a little over the top for something that people must want to do quiet often Andrew

auriga to therion
by Erik VdBroeck 05 Oct '12

hi to all! As I was wondering if there would be a way to convert Auriga files into Therion .th data files without losing the radiant (splay) shots etc, I contacted Luc Leblanc, author of Auriga. We tried out some conversion into .csv file, but a real export to Therion format could be a possible option Some questions remain, though, before the converter can be programmed, so I'm forwarding some questions we would like to see answered, as the Therion book is not clear about it: - If the "data" command contains "backcompass" and/or "backclino" and the user did not actually take a backsight for some shots, can I put 0.00 or do I have to fake backsights to prevent bad averaging? Or is there a way to tell Therion to ignore this missing data (other than repeating a "data" command), like putting a ? or some special character? - Can I interleave station flags between survey shots, like: 3.1 3.2 10.00 359.99 -10.00 station 3.1 "" entrance 3.2 3.3 11.00 1.00 -12.00 - For splay shots (between a station and some detail, where one station is . or -), do I have to put LRUD data? It's always going to be 0.00. - If I want to pass topofil data, can I pass both start and end readings? How? The Therion book only mentions "topofil". - How do I tell Therion that slope 0 is up or down? Such 0-180 clinometers are used on topofils. - How do I pass dive data? I just put the depth instead of the slope and I set "meters" for the "depth" instrument? - The Therion book would gain much clarity by providing examples for each command. Thanks for any help !
