> Martins example: > > map CJ_layers.map > CJ_1layer.map > break > CJ_2layer.map > break > CJ_3layer.map > endmap > >etc I like that general concept Martin, pretty much what I was hoping to end up with, including the likes of the preview statements in the detail maps. Nice & clean. So far it will play nicely with Maps and with Atlas outputs which is the first requirement. The next challenge is to allow for the optional offsetting of parts of the map by just commenting or uncommenting a line or two. (Depending on the particular output requirement maps need to be both 'with-offsets' and 'without-offsets', but atlas are almost always better without offsets, because by default each map, by the magic of therion, gets it's own chapter and these are linked 'up & down levels' with hyperlinks). And a further challenge is how best to incorporate sections. Are they best in a separate standalone map, or are they best sprinkled over the various plan maps, and simply turned on or off in bulk with symbol-hide, dependant on scale, or individually with -visibility off? Currently my datasets are a bit chaotic in this respect. Sorry Andrew, I don't have any better ideas for intertwined caves. With a good 'map system' like what I'm looking for it should be quite easy to rearrange the details of each map as the cave discoveries progress. I'm finding the concept of where one cave starts and another stops to be quite academic and changeable. Prejudices based on which passage was discovered from which known 'cave' are often blown apart by the speleo-morphology that becomes apparent once 'most of the discoveries' are made. I do agree though, it would be nice if Therion automatically knew which part of each map to draw 'over' or 'under' based on the survey station elevations! Bruce

example data-georeferencing
by djh7771＠gmail.com 16 Sep '10

Hi All; I have recently started to focus on learning therion to use data that I have gathered using Quantum GIS. I can see some good benefits from using therion for my needs but I have run into some problems that I am having difficulty solving. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction, I have gone though the examples and manual and pdf but apparently need to be led to the answer. My goal in therion is to georeference images and overlay centerline and other data for eventual use in a GIS. Is there anyone that has a template or example that shows how to organize the .th, .th2 and thconfig files for georeferencing images and centerline data from a fixed station or any other means? The farthest I get is entering local coordinates for the survey lines and image and creating an EPSG fixed point. How do I tie these together I have the pdfs, examples and info from the wiki but just dont know how to put it together Thanks in advance for the help, Dan H

Bruce Thanks for your explanations. At Sun, 31 Jan 2010 14:24:11 +1300, Bruce Mutton wrote: > It is documented, but on searching just now I discovered it is quite hard to > find. If I understand that correctly, PocketTopo is still completely closed and the file format not documented. Also from reading your comments, the PDA software seems to be quite inflexible (first splay shots, then next target). Since I am also considering going that route, these seem to be severe limitations. Working together with people using PocketTopo, it is quite inconvenint not to have true Therion *.th files with the full set of measurements, but just processed data. It would be great to be able to write a *.top conversion utility, but for that the file format needs to known. Best, Martin

Therion on Mac OSX Snow Leopard working
by Christian Sandrini 15 Sep '10

Hi I finally got everything working under Mac OSX Snow Leopard including Loch. The main Problem was to compile Loch as wxWidgets has to be compiled as 32-bit. (unless you find the 64-bit version of some libs needed by wxWidgets) Follow the documentation on therion's wiki page http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=masox Make the following changes: - When installing TeX make sure to use the big MacTeX application. Otherwise you will get some compilation errors when trying to compile the maps. http://mirror.ctan.org/systems/mac/mactex/MacTeX.mpkg.zip - Install CMAKE as described in the documentation. I used the following version: 2.8-2 - Install VTK (I used version 5.4) as described but use different configuration for CMakeCache.txt CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX:PATH=/Applications/VTK_ALL/VTK_Bin CMAKE_OSX_ARCHITECTURES:STRING=i386;x86_64 VTK_USE_COCOA:BOOL=ON VTK_USE_CARBON:BOOL=OFF CMAKE_OSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET:STRING=10.4 - Edit the Makefile of Loch in /Applications/therion/loch/Makefile as follows. Basically it is the same configuration as described in the documentation apart that I added the "-m32" option to the compiler. This will compile it as 32-bit Adjust VTK path if needed. (If you compiled VTK 64-bit only instead of universal build it will print some symbol linking errors) # PLATFORM MACOSX BITTINESS = -m32 CXX = c++ ${BITTINESS} CC = cc ${BITTINESS} VTKPATH = /Applications/VTK_All/VTK_Bin VTKINCLUDEPATH = $(VTKPATH)/include/vtk-5.4 VTKLIBPATH = $(VTKPATH)/lib/vtk-5.4 VTKLIBS = -lvtkHybrid -lvtkImaging -lvtkIO -lvtkGraphics -lvtkFiltering -lvtkCommon -lvtkjpeg -lvtkpng -lvtkzlib -lvtksys -lfreetype -lGLU -lGL POBJECTS = getline.o CXXPFLAGS = -W -Wall -DLXMACOSX $(shell wx-config --cxxflags) -I$(VTKINCLUDEPATH) -Wno-deprecated -I/usr/X11R6/include -I/usr/X11R6/include/freetype2 CCPFLAGS = -W -Wall -DLXMACOSX $(shell wx-config --cflags) -I/usr/X11R6/include LXLIBDIR = PLIBS = -lz -L/usr/X11R6/lib $(shell wx-config --libs gl) -L$(VTKLIBPATH) $(VTKLIBS) POSTMAKE = cp -f ./loch ./loch.app/Contents/MacOS STRIPFLAG = # PLATFORM ENDCONFIG With a bit of luck everything will run through smoothly. Hopefully this will help you out! cheers Chris

Length & Depth differ
by Bruce 14 Sep '10

14 Sep '10

Has anyone noticed that cave lengths and depths reported by the textual (survey-list and cave-list) exports sometimes differ from the length and depth reported by the map (pdf) export, even when all these outputs are produced with the same thconfig run? I have tracked the one case I have noticed down to a particular survey (I think) that is being counted in the textual outputs but not in the map output (45m out of 11.5km). At least this explains the length discrepancy. Survey stations for the 'missing' survey are included in one of the scraps, and are plotted in the output, so I would think it's length should be counted. The depth discrepancy is more perplexing, because this particular survey is halfway between the top and bottom of the cave (in a side passage), and so of course should have no effect on the overall depth. It is possible that the length of the survey is co-incidentally the same as the discrepancy, and there is something else going on. If the cause is as I have described then it will probably have been present in this dataset for the last couple of years. I do recall being perplexed by differing figures in the distant past, but put it in the 'things to do' basket. Any ideas? Regards Bruce

Therion on Mac OSX

Hi there I am having difficulties to install Therion on MacOSX. Actually Therion works but I can't compile any maps. The maps works perfectly on Windows. This is the output I get in the compiller (./data.mp [4001] [4002] [4003] [4004] [4005] [4006] [4007] [4008] [4009] [4010 ] [4011] [4012] [1] [2] [3] >> data.mp >> data.mpx ! The two files given above are one of your source files and an auxiliary file I need to read to find out what your btex..etex blocks mean. How to display splay shots in xvi?
by Xavier Pennec 07 Sep '10

07 Sep '10

In the survex/therion syntax, we can define splay shots for additional points taken to help drawing the scraps. However, these shots are hidden by default in models (according to what is said in the therion book), even when we specify "symbol-show point station". Does anyone know the syntax to show these splay shots in the xvi file? I definitely need them to draw the sketches, and commneting out the splay flags to get the xvi right is not really a clean and sustanable option for large surveys... Associating thconfig extension with Wish Application causes bad option utf-8 on some machines
by Bruce 03 Sep '10

03 Sep '10

For the last few years I have been adding a non-'therion'-standard extension to thconfig files, eg thconfig.thc so that I can open them in XTherion directly from the Windows File Explorer. The first time this is attempted an association needs to be made with 'Wish Application', but thereafter it works smoothly, well at least most of the time. I have described my rudimentary understanding of this here. http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=windows <http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=windows&s%5b%5d=modify&s%5b%5d=di stinguish&s%5b%5d=layout> &s[]=modify&s[]=distinguish&s[]=layout A while back I installed Therion on a Windows 7 machine and got an error similar to the image below. bad option "utf-8": must be convertfrom, convertto, names, or system while executing "encoding utf-8" (file "D:\Therion\....thconfig-Flora.thc" line 1) I assumed it was due to some difference between Windows 7 and Windows XP, upsetting the implementation of the tcl scripts, however I had the same problem recently with an old Windows XP machine (older that my current 2006 machine). So perhaps something else is going on. On a particular machine it will either always work, or never work. Any ideas how I might overcome the problem on the machines where this technique does not work? Bruce

ESRI Shapefile Features
by Carl Magnuson 02 Sep '10

02 Sep '10

Has there been any thought of exporting the symbols to the shapefiles generated by therion? It would be nice to be able to set up some matching symbology in ArcGIS for viewing the generated maps. Just a thought. Carl
