More show and hide

Further to my last post. Have just figured out that the following statement will hide morphed sketches of caves. symbol-hide group surface-centreline # hides morphed sketches as well?? Is this by design, or is it a side effect of something else I may be doing? I'm using version 5.2 Perhaps it is because it is drawn on the same layer as the surface image? Bruce

Stumbled on this sheet I made a while back. It might be useful for those like me who struggle to make nice cave colours by making up sets of three random numbers... Bruce

Scale Image - Made it work
by Bruce Mutton 11 Oct '08

I made it work at last. I see I had forgotten almost as much as I have learned. Attached is the corrected file, plus a sample of the output one gets from it. (Yes, extremely blurry, I squashed the file size down too much - still, perhaps it's the thought that counts.) So what have I learned? Test examples before I post them! If I'm not absolutely sure perhaps it's better to keep quiet. Anyway, more half baked advise. The attached "Map Editor Morphed sketch on output map process.doc" goes with the following list. I think there are other ways, but this seems to work more or less. 1. To Add sketches to the drawing, first create a scrap and give it a projection. 2. Select the scrap 3. Use the background image insert button to insert an image. It should now be visible in the editor window, you might have to zoom around a bit to find it. The drawing area auto adjust button is useful for this. 4. Insert at least two points of type station and in the options text box name them after the stations defined in the survey, in this example the P'INDEX.th file. These should be points for which you can make a pretty good guess at the co-ordinates, either with respect to a co-ord system, or a local arbitrary one that you make up, say relative to the cave entrance. At this point you can get an output with two survey stations only, or you can go on to trace over the image to produce cartography in the usual Therion way. 5. To see the morphed sketch in the output, you need to use the scraps background image insert button. The status bar turns red, and you click on the image displayed in the map window. This adds it to the text box above the button, along with a btm left co-ord that locates it in the map window 6. Now, scaling the sketch. Not sure if this is necessary because I've used TWO survey stations above, but if I'd used one it would be (as is the case for cross sections). In this case I scaled it - belt & braces perhaps. Drag the two ends of the red line a known distance apart on the image. In this example, 984mE and 44mS. XTherion tells you the picture scale values and you enter the real scale values. Use the update scrap button. Now I think the image should be included in the outputs, morphed to the survey stations that you have included. And to those who can do this in their sleep. Please speak up to let us know if I've got it wrong yet again. Bruce

Scale Image again
by Bruce Mutton 11 Oct '08

Well, I see I messed that one up! Was in a hurry. The attached is a complete set and it works better, but not properly. Too long ago since I did this and I forget. First off. Use the files attached in this message. I fixed some bugs, and added a cut down version of the cave image jpg. The sketch to be displayed does indeed need to be in the 'background sketches' box. (Map Editor with *.th2 file open) In the objects box select the scrap, then look down in the scraps box. At the bottom the cave image jpg is listed. This needs to be scaled properly, and clearly I've forgotten how to do it, cos regardless of how I mess with it the map that is produced is blank! It does include my two 'survey' stations at least. Funny thing, cos my 3MB original image works perfectly. Perhaps someone can remind us how to scale the background sketch properly. Bruce

Scale image

Hi, sorry to bother you with a beginner question, but cannot make it even reading through the archives. I have a .th file with centerline and .th2 file with his scraps. Now I should add to this a th2 file with an image of an old survey. I drawed walls and all objects in the scrap but do not know the scale and do not have original data of the centerline. How can I put together my centerline/scrap of known scale with this image? Do not know how to do it and I'm having dificulty understanding how the scale process is working. could you help me on this? thanks a lot Andrea Marassich

pdfTK for mix'n'match Therion Output
by Bruce Mutton 07 Oct '08

Thanks Olly pdftk.exe streamlines the process quite a bit, and makes it repeatable. I made myself a couple of batch files to ease the process, attached. They work on DOS (Windows) OS machines. Nice Features Pdf pages can be combined and rearranged in almost any combination The meta-data from any of the input files can be copied into the new output file semi-automatically. Batch processing, so, like Therion, can reproduce a new version of the map without having to remember so many finishing touches. The hyperlinks are preserved reliably (at least so far). Missing Features Does not rotate (individual or all) pages Does not preserve bookmarks (Outlining) from the input files to the output file. Another Observation Pdftk removes the named 'destinations' that Therion produced output pdf file hyperlinks use, and replaces them with hyperlinks that use page numbers. This works fine for any set of documents processed as a single run in pdftk, but if multiple runs are required to produce a merged/meshed document, then the hyperlinks remain, but they lose the location they are to jump to. If this is taken into account it turns out (for me anyway) that pdftk is more reliable and faster than Acrobat 6. Regards Bruce

Atlas with Interleaved plan and elevation views
by Bruce Mutton 06 Oct '08

I've been experimenting with using Adobe Acrobat 6 to take atlas pdf outputs from Therion and merging multiple documents as follows; 1. Use a word processor to make a nice title page with snippets of Therion output pasted into it (Title, exploration statistics, notes, legend, 3D image from loch), then creating a pdf from it. 2. Merge the title, plan & elevation pdfs, then re-order so that we have the first plan sheet on page two, and the first elevation sheet on page three, the second elevation sheet on page four, etc, then delete any surplus pages. 3. Go through all the hyperlinks, and adjust any that seem to have been messed up. (It seems to happen that a few of them get linked to the wrong page during the merge process) If this is printed double sided, we get facing plan & elevations that relate directly to each other. On screen we can view it similarly, and we can use the hyperlinks to skip directly to the adjacent sheets as if it were an unadulterated Therion output without having to scroll past the alternate views. Possibly an optimal document that works equally well on paper as it does on screen. My preliminary trials with two or three page atlas's seem to work OK. A couple of questions.. 1. Anyone else done anything like this? 2. Any suggestions for other software packages to manipulate the pdf files (so I don't have to use my employers computer or purchase my own copy of Acrobat) 3. Any thought of adding an optional bottom-margin and right-margin to Therions atlas layout options? At present they seem to always be equal (top=bottom, left=right) and this means that there is rarely a direct alignment between the adjacent plans and elevations, especially if for example portrait plans are mixed with landscape elevations - the size <width> <height> needs to be matched for the views to be perfectly synchronised, but the navigation pane coupled with 'equal' margins means the views are misaligned.+ Bruce
