3d file wall models - scrap connections
I very much like the 3d map output into survex .3d format. However it does seem to have a problem at joins. It all looks lovely in plan view, but as soon as you look sideways you will see that there is often a vertical offset in the lines at the join. I can see that there _might_ be a pitch at the pont of the join, but normally a smooth transition in the vertical as well as horizontal plane is desired. How are the vertical co-ordoinates at the ends of scraps determined, and is it possible to msake sure they 'join' (have the same co-ordinates) both vertically as well as horizontally? The option to say 'add vertical lines to complete join' would be useful for cases where there is a step height change (e.g the connection between menagerie_s4 and terikan.reifticious_s1). But I'm not quite sure how/where this might be done. If it is hard, then joining everything up would be much better than it is now. See http://wookware.org/mulu/MuluWalls.3d, then look at it on a bit of a tilt. Yes, but doing it correctly is really a great problem. Currently, we process joins in 2D, and even there it does not work very well :( If you do not draw sketches in scale, therion is not able to morph scraps correctly. Doing morphing in 3D would be nice, but to do it, we need to redesign morphing codes completely. We have started to work on this, but it will definitely take some time.

Agree.

Coordinates are determined by interpolation from stations in scrap. Currently we use "inverse distance to a power" as a weighting function.

We will see, but "step-by-step" :) In the near future, I would like to finish new 3D viewer (this has priority #1), then we would like to add support of geographical coordinate systems (UTM and others) directly in therion and then, we can start improving morphing functions.
See http://wookware.org/mulu/MuluWalls.3d, then look at it on a bit of a tilt.
BTW, do you present also these 3D's, that you want them to look smoother? I am wondering :) I need smooth joins in 3D just for model generation. S.

I have not yet presented them, no, but that is partly because they only look good from directly above. BTW on a related matter I tried to export a model to vrml and 3dmf and found that I could not find anything that actually worked. The mview viewer segfaulted, the openvrml viewer didn't seem to be suitable for an object (as opposed to a world). I couldn't build the viewer for 3dmf. I will trya bit harder and report more if I really can't get it to go. Exactly, Martin - that's a fat lot of use for Linux users. I've just gone through this -should have read your mail. I didn't need -lpng12 to get it to link. I also note that the help files are built with something called hhc which processes the .hhp file This appears to be stuff from 'microsoft help generator'. Does loch actually require CHM files to show help or can we just use the .html files? There are free tools for generating .chm files apparently, although it looks like work from xml rather than html sources. I'm not sure what is the right approach here. I think I'll just put the .html files into the debian package for now. Still loch has built and seems to run and work :-) it is a 2.5Mb executable though so splitting it off into a therion-viewer package makes sense to me. CHM files are used on Win32 only. On other platforms, .htb (= compressed html) files should be used.

Hi there! I downloaded wxWidgets-2.6.3 debs from backports.org VTK-5.0.2 compiled from source (BTW, what amount of things it leaves on /usr/local). /usr/local is on $PATH Compilation (dev snapshot) seems to work, but I can't see model viewer window. Some questions: a) Is there a new 3D format?
There is new separate 3D viewer, not integrated in xtherion. It is called loch (you should have loch executable in loch subdirectory, if it worked OK). It has also own and new 3D file format (.lox extension).
b) I'm on debian sarge, vtk-4 and wxwindows-2.4 could be used?
I am not sure about wxwindows, it should probably work, but vtk-4 is for sure not compatible. May be some #ifdef could help in this case.

There is quite a lot of change between wx2.4 and wx2.6. It is no doubt possible, but Stacho may have used special 2.6 features - I don't know.
c) libtk-img and bwidget would be the .debs corresponding to tkimg and BWidgets?
yes they are. I only recently discovered libtk-img, so the stable version of therion does not pull it in. The version uploaded last week (0.3.10-3) recommends it. If so, could the website point debian users to those packages? Normally debian users (and ubuntu users) can just apt-get therion. You will only need this info for a short while until I get round to uploading therion 0.4.0. I have started on it, but am horribly busy right now with competing tasks. The really big difference in debian land is that 2.4 is packaged as the "non-unicode" build, while 2.6 is packaged as the "unicode" build. (The terms "non-unicode" and "unicode" are somewhat misleading - the "unicode" build uses wide characters internally, but you can use UTF-8 with the non-unicode build...) I've been trying to cajole Ron Lee into packaging 2.6 as "non-unicode" too, but there's no sign of it happening and wx 2.8 looks likely to be out soon. Anyway, if therion's using the wide-character version of wx, you'll probably struggle to get it to work with the debian wx 2.4 packages. If it isn't, then you'll struggle to get it to work with the debian wx 2.6 packages. Cheers, Olly

It should work with both versions of wx, because developement is done on non-unicode version and only final release is compiled in unicode version. Just int. characters are not displayed correctly when non-unicode version is used. S.

Also, we are commited to get a live cd based on sarge for basque people on October, 20. I could try to help with therion packaging afterwards. Best regards, Roman

Normally debian users (and ubuntu users) can just apt-get therion. You will only need this info for a short while until I get round to uploading therion 0.4.0. I have started on it, but am horribly busy right now with competing tasks.

OK, time has been found. There is now a reasonable packaging of therion, therion-doc (including all the wiki stuff, as of ladislev's last static export), and therion-viewer. I have now merged the latest snapshot release (2006-12-21). It all seems to work, although if I use the mouse to move the view on loch then after about 5 steps it crashes, taking the X-server down with it (!). This is quite serious. If I just use menus or keys then it seems to be OK. It doesn't matter if a file is loaded or not. The packaging could use a bit of tidying up in READMEs etc, but is good enough. I will upload it to experimental in the next few days, by way of a littel xmas present for you all :-) I am working on it in svn://wookware.org/therion We should probably try and rationlise matters so we don't have 3 different therion repositories. This one for the debian packaging, philip's for his cmake and loch work and the official one stacho uses at gnu.org. Currently merging a new upstream tarball into my svn version is a pain. I need to sort that out. Wookey -- Aleph One Ltd, Bottisham, CAMBRIDGE, CB5 9BA, UK Tel +44 (0) 1223 811679 work: http://www.aleph1.co.uk/ play: http://wookware.org/

Sorry for that, no idea where the problem can be. Do other linux users face the same problem? With exception of textures, it seems to work on our linux machines.

How does your work interact with therion? S.

I am playing with decentralized version control system - bazaar-ng - now and I really like it. I think if some VCS is REALLY NEEDED then this solution is better then SVN. See http://bazaar-vcs.org/ Advantages: - easy branching and tracking main tree - you don't need to be connected to some central server to commit changes to your local branch. Especially this is very usefull because Stacho and Martin cannot use SVN or CVS - braches can be published over FTP, FTPS protocol (you don't need any special port opened on your firewall) - braches can be downloaded over HTTP, FTP, FTPS protocol How it can works: 1. one central repository with read-only therion mainline brach 2. each developer will have his own branch bzr branch http://<existing branch> <own branch> 3. make your changes, add files, etc. cd <own branch> bzr status # shows all new or updated files bzr add # if you added some new files bzr commit -m "Commit info" 4. after commiting changes to your branch you can easy create revisions bundle against mainline branch cd <own branch> bzr bundle-revisions --output <path/to/output file> It will contains diff and all info about your commits needed for merge 4. You will send this bundle by mail to Stacho/Martin/Therion mailing list 5. Stacho or Martin can merge bundle to theirs freshly updated own braches and test it. After commit they will again create bundle package against mainline branch and upload this file to the server and then it will be automatically merged to the mainline branch. L.
Hi, After compiling therion model viewer, I found something has changed, so I post this to get it recorded: We need: tcl/tk8.4 installed (if you are on debian, aptitude install tcl8.4-dev tk8.4-dev) (as root) ln -s /usr/include/tcl8.4/tk.h /usr/include ln -s /usr/include/tcl8.4/tcl.h /usr/include ln -s /usr/include/tcl8.4/tclDecls.h /usr/include ln -s /usr/include/tcl8.4/tclPlatDecls.h /usr/include ln -s /usr/include/tcl8.4/tkDecls.h /usr/include (may be I need this linking because I have both tcl/tk8.3 and tcl/tk8.4 installed) (as user) cd /path/to/therion/sorce/thtom/linux make su cp -R Tom0.2 /usr/lib/tcl8.4 exit done; you can run xtherion as user now and see if there is model wiewer window (it should) Previously (0.3.8 or so) I copied Tom0.2 to /usr/lib/tk8.4, but it seems not to work anymore.
