Wishlist - scrap preview, low-res preview
The interface needs a better way of previewing scrap names so one can join up a lot of scraps without having to slowly open each file and click about. Being able to see a scrap number somehow without selecting the scrap would also be useful. At the moment if editing a .th2 file to put in joins one needs to close current scrap and open new one, then click on correct part to find out which bit is which. Not sure how best to deal with this problem. Maybe showing scrap-names in the debug ouput would be sufficient. Or a separate low-res output with scraps coloured differently and labelled? The 'without pics' option helps somewhat here, but what I really need is some kind of low-res scrap overview. There is a related problem that the 1.5Mb PDF file now takes at least 2 minutes to render on my 900Mhz laptop. Having some kind of low-res ouput would be generally useful for checking that joins have worked and caves have appeared would be very handy - is that at all practical? I'm not sure where all the time goes. Wookey -- Aleph One Ltd, Bottisham, CAMBRIDGE, CB5 9BA, UK Tel +44 (0) 1223 811679 work: http://www.aleph1.co.uk/ play: http://www.chaos.org.uk/~wookey/

Agree. I had the same idea.

That's easy -- use layout like scale 1 1000 symbol hide group all symbol show group wall transparency off

use the same layout -- it's much faster to display if the transparency is not used, and only passage walls are displayed. Martin

OK - just for reference the correct syntax is: symbol-hide group all symbol-show line wall And that is a lot faster - so can I get the scrap-names written on it too? The "select" command works for maps and for symbols. Check the command part of xtherion editor window - down are two sections - Survey structure and Map structure. They start be activew only after first succesfull compilation. If you open them you may see outline of surveys and particular maps. Very usefull you check for duplicities (duplicite scraps or surveys in maps, ...) and very usefull you want to select only part of cave. You may add several lines in thconfig file : select map1 select map2 select map3 select map4 or unselect map1 unselect map2 unselect map3 unselect map4 and at export definition section ad: export map -proj plan -layout <layout> -o <file1.pdf export map -proj plan -layout <layout> -o <file2.pdf export map -proj plan -layout <layout> -o <file3.pdf export map -proj plan -layout <layout> -o <file4.pdf end just comment and uncomment the particular lines. I add an example, but you may check the example in wiki section too - quite simple one. MartinS. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx encoding utf-8 #source "pod30/POD30" #source paralelky/PARALELKY source lenjmn #source jsv/JSV #unselect pod30_m@pod30.jmn #unselect paralelky_m@paralelky.jmn #unselect vych_hor_m@vych_hor.jmn #select velkom_m@vych_hor.jmn #export model -fmt survex #export atlas plan -o "atlas.pdf" -layout-doc-title "J.M.N." #export atlas plan -o "atlas_paralelky.pdf" -layout-doc-title "J.M.N. Paralelky" export map plan -layout-scale 1 500 -o "jmn.pdf" xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx --

OK, so what is the symbol name for 'scrapnames' This is not something that is normally shown?

So it is - I have never taken any notice of this bit.
You may add several lines in thconfig file :
select map1 select map2 select map3 select map4
or
unselect map1 unselect map2 unselect map3 unselect map4
and at export definition section ad:
export map -proj plan -layout <layout> -o <file1.pdf export map -proj plan -layout <layout> -o <file2.pdf export map -proj plan -layout <layout> -o <file3.pdf export map -proj plan -layout <layout> -o <file4.pdf
end just comment and uncomment the particular lines.
Right - thanx. The bit of this that seems rather naff is having to comment and uncomment different map outputs. It ought to be possible to produce more than one 'section set' at a time from a given dataset in the same projection. I will try Stacho's suggestion of chained thconfig files, or maybe a script which runs therion on a series of thconfig files. That should be 'selection set' - i.e. arrangements of possible map selections. (bit confusing as I wrote it) Wookey -- Aleph One Ltd, Bottisham, CAMBRIDGE, CB5 9BA, UK Tel +44 (0) 1223 811679 work: http://www.aleph1.co.uk/ play: http://www.chaos.org.uk/~wookey/

Yes, understood - but I am not sure whether it is possible. One selection set per thconfig file is an assumption used quite deep in the code. It would be probably difficult to implement it. But it would be nice, if it would be possible, so I will put this into "Would be nice" list. S.

wiki - I had add it there.

It's my "the poor man way". But you may create many cave_X_thconfig or thconfig_caveX_midifcationY files and run them directly from therion, I'm sure. The string thcongig is important for xtherion to recognize the configuration files, but the rest of name is only on your choice. Martin --

Well, it is not possible to show the name of the scraps yet. But I will put this into TODO list. Probably debug scrap-names would be better.

May be writing a simple Makefile for such a complicated projects is another standard solution. S.

MartinB had a suggestion, that scraps that connect within one file (have common end wall points) - should be joined automatically. Especially in the case, when you are redrawing already existing maps - it would be very usefull and it would save you some time.

With the new 3D engine - there should be possibility to export also 2D maps for 3D viewer. Having only coloured scrap outlines that are interactivly zoomable and scrollable and generated very fast (no metapost and PDFTeX needed) would be worth of it. The problem is, that new 3D engine is still only a future - I am not sure when it will be ready for preliminary beta release. It does not work now. But if you would like to - I can use survex 3d format also for 2D output. You would write: export map -o map.3d and there will be centerline and walls shown as lines in this file. I can label the wall points with scrap names, so you should be able to preview your work easily. What do you think? I am just missing reload button in aven/xcaverot, but this I should write to survex mailing list. S.

Yes, that seems very sensible, it would hardly ever be the wrong thing to do. Might be a bit confusing to new users (some join happen magically, others do not), but certainly for the big redrawing I have just done this would have saved quite a lot of time and fiddling about.

If it is not too hard then that sounds really useful - let's try it.

Yes, I have wanted that many times too. Wookey

In the latest developement snapshot published today, there should be .3d map export available. Is is quite fast, but outlines that are not filled with the color look a little bit chaotic. Also bugs you wrote about should be removed. Regards, S.

Me too! This should appear soon. For now, "Alt-F" and then press "1" sort of does the job, except it resets the view. Cheers, Olly
