questions on therion
Hello, I'm not really using therion yet (there were always other people who draw the caves ;-) but that will change propably. a) I try to get an overlay of the centreline on a scanned topographical map but I always get an error ( test.th [47] -- number expected -- end) but I don't know where to insert more numbers examplecode: surface bitmap ur.png [1 11 211065.0 2139614.0 6310 4474 237623.0 2158455.0 meters] grid-units meters grid 211000.0 2139000.0 20000.0 15000.0 2 2 10.0 10.0 10.0 10.0 end surface b) at loops: is the standard error for the measurement devices included when the loops are closed? IE when more than one GPS measurements (with high errors are used to fix the cave)? Thanks for any help Wolfgang

'end surface' should be written without space; the 'end' hadn't been recognized as a keyword and therion expected another row of numbers. If you want only to display scanned map, grid-units and grid commands are not necessary -- they are only used in 3d model.
b) at loops: is the standard error for the measurement devices included when the loops are closed? IE when more than one GPS measurements (with high errors are used to fix the cave)?
Yes. Martin

ok, small typo. When I delete grid-units and grid command therion complains about missing grid (I produce only 2d map at the moment)! So I think I have to use them. But now an other error occurs (dimension too large). I think it is from pdftex. I have a scan from a topographical map and specified the koordinates with UTM. Thanks Wolfgang here the output: This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.11a-2.1 (Web2c 7.5.2) entering extended mode (./data.tex{c:/Program Files/Therion/texmf/tex/pdftex.cfg} (./th_enc.tex) (./th_texts.tex) (./th_resources.tex) (./th_fontdef.tex{c:/Program Files/Therio n/texmf/dvips/config/pdftex.map}) (./th_formdef.tex) (./th_pagedef.tex D:/temp/therion_tham_nam_eng/ur.png ! This is strange, I have just tested following lines: surface bitmap map.png [1335 816 400419.2 5421275.2 1781 257 401357.1 5420034.05] endsurface and there was no complain. It worked without problems. What version of therion and OS do you use?

This may happen - it is already in TODO to generate some more user friendly warnings. Therion by default generate map in 1:200 scale (for caves), which is in your case (map at 20x30km a PDF with dimensions 100x150 m. Try using -layout-scale 1 20000 or some even smaller scale. Regards, S.

Or use SVG output instead of PDF -- there is no arbitrary limit on page size. Martin
Thanks a lot! That was it! I'm quite new to therion but the reason is quite obvious. But there is another problem with symbol scaling (station marks)

Hm, I tested it again today and it works now even without grid. Strange, I don't know what I did yesterday. It also seems that Therion crops the image to the layout size. Is there a way to get the whole image with the centrelines (or outlines,..) but with no additional north arrow or other layout stuff?

This works but it changes the symbol sizes of the stations also. I've added two pdfs which show the different scales. I only have the centreline data (and stationmarks) visible with some metapost code. The best would be to swich station marks off. Here the layout part of my config: layout test #scale 1 20000 scale 1 1000 surface bottom code metapost def l_survey_cave (expr p) = draw p withpen PenD withcolor (0.1,0.3,0.1); enddef; endlayout Thanks Wolfgang

It crops the image to the area of map + header + border around them. You may increase the border by setting 'overlap' in the layout. You may hide header (north arrow etc.) using 'map-header 100 100 off' option in layout.

You may switch station marks off using 'symbol-hide point station' in layout without the need of metapost redefinitions. If you want to display cave in the scale 1:1000 with the topographical map as a background, try cropping the bitmap to an area slightly larger than the cave; or use SVG. Martin
Thanks a lot for your help! I will also test svg but I first have to chack what software is able to view that files on Win. Wolfgang Martin Budaj schrieb:
