Hello, I would like to print a map with Centerline, Left & Right lines (based on LRUD data). The XVI format has this nicelly, but I can't find a way to print out the xvi file. Thanks in advance, Ricardo (www.ENTRADA.tv)
Well, there is no direct way how to print XVI and I can not imagine how it would be possible. There is a possibility for printing canvas to postscript in TCL, but my experience with it is not very good. I would suggest you to generate PDF map for printing. All items visible in XVI may be also visible in PDF. Just use export command: export map.pdf -layout-color map-fg 50 -layout-scale 1 500 By default - map-fg is white, therefore walls are not visible when exporting data just from centerline. If you have some scraps already drawn in your data, you need to create and select centerline map before this export. It can be done within your configuration file. Example: source map centerline-map my-survey endmap endsource select centerline-map export map.pdf -layout-color map-fg 50 -layout-scale 1 500 ... where my-survey is the name of top-level survey. If it will not work for you, just send me some somple data where it does not work and I can have a look. Regards, S. Quoting Ricardo Constantino <ricardo@entrada.tv>:

Hi Stacho, I've been wanting to get print-outs of XVI, too, so I am verry interested in your recommendation, below. I've tried it, but this is the result I get: only the centreline is visible, not LRUD. - Ben Cooper -----Original Message----- From: therion-bounces@speleo.sk [mailto:therion-bounces@speleo.sk] On Behalf Of Stacho Mudrak Sent: 06 November 2007 12:24 To: therion@speleo.sk Subject: Re: [Therion] Printing xvi maps Well, there is no direct way how to print XVI and I can not imagine how it would be possible. Just few remarks: 1. Did you use latest version of therion (0.5.1)? It is a new feature in that version. 2. You may also use other colors that gray. Just add color map-fg [100 50 50] to your layout. Numbers mean intensities of red, green and blue. 3. Options in layout and export command are the same. In layout, you can use color map-fg 50 and in export command option -layout-color map-fg 50 HTH, S. Bruce Mutton wrote:

Hi Ben My first encounter with Therion was about two weeks ago, and the things that work well for me just seem to keep getting better, but there are some (rather critical) things that still escape me, like overlaying scraps onto the centreline. I thought I'd see what you had done in the hope it would shed some light on my problems... Anyway, your query. The email system scrambled your *.th listing, but I think I patched it up OK. (Perhaps it's better to attach the file, then we can open it directly with just one double click.) My understanding is that the LRUD data apply to the 'from' station, not the 'to' station. But I see your point, your plots, and the plot attached seem to indicate something different is going on. I should have included the files used to create the pdf with my last post. By the way, 'extensionless' files are not so convenient to use with Windows OS and so I've taken to using a .thc extension for the thconfig files. Windows and Therion seem OK with it, and now I can create output directly from the OS by double clicking the thconfig.thc files. Bruce

Good idea, but the thconfig itself is an "extension" too. So you may have in your folder: thconfig_test thconfig_first_part thconfig_polygon extension.thconfig etc. The inverse names with thconfig at beginning make more sense because they are sorted together. m.

It would be more standard to just use extensions to indicate filetypes and use the "sort by extension" or "sort by filetype" feature in your filer or shell when you want to see files arranged by type. For example, with GNU ls, I can use the "-X" option. In Nautilus, I can use "View->Arrange Items->By Type". Cheers, Olly
I guess it is OK to use both systems in the same filename, thconfig-* to match up with established Therion convention, and *.thc to match up with OS conventions. Bruce
Ben I tried Stacho's suggestion, and it worked fine, although I think he abbreviated the syntax of the export command a bit much. Here's my more verbose version...
layout bruce-map-export north true scale 1 500 base-scale 1 500 units metric
page-grid on grid-size 100 100 100 metres # layout-map-header 0 0 s #causes error? legend on statistics explo all statistics topo all statistics carto all statistics copyright all debug on endlayout
export map -projection plan -layout bruce-map-export \ -layout-color map-fg 90 \ -output SurveyPlan.pdf -fmt pdf
Try this Ben. The 90 gives a passage that is more lightly shaded than
Hi Bruce, Overlaying scraps onto the centreline...? So what I do is to save each passage section (a day's surveying data) into a file called passage_name.th, and compile this with a dedicated thconfig.passage_name.tp (for some reason I typed my thconfig files as tp, but same effect as your .thc). This produces the raw passage_name.XVI, passage_name.3d, passage_name_extended.XVI, and now the passage_name_LRUD.pdf files in a subfolder of my main survey. I review these files to debug my .th file, typically sorting out Left-Right issues for reverse legs. My experience is that the LRUD applies to the "To" station. In order to generate the first "From" station LRUD, I manually create a Dummy station, 1cm away from the true starting station, as follows: E.g. Data from to compass clino length left right up down # 1 2 45 10 6.00 0.0 2.0 2.0 0.5 # station 1 LRUD 1 1a 45 10 0.01 0.0 2.0 2.2 0.5 # station 1 LRUD 1a 2 45 10 5.99 2.0 0.0 2.1 0.6 # station 2 LRUD I also find that reverse legs, or dog-legs are not handled well by LRUD. This is not a criticism of Therion, but a confusion with the surveyors. It is not so simple to say that the LRUD applies to the direction of the survey, because the LRUD applies to a station, which may have legs taken both From and To it. Therefore, our convention is to record LRUD in the direction of the passage. If we turn around, the passage Left and Right remain where they were! I then need to disentangle this in the .th file in order to get the XVI looking correct. I then create passage-name.th2, insert th XVI, insert station points over the centreline, and draw the walls over the LRUD with reference to any sketches we have produced. It's that simple. For stage 2 of our surveying project, we plan to print out these "rough" surveys onto waterproof paper, and then re-draw the cave onto these sheets while actually standing in the cave. For that purpose, a pdf output of the XVI is all we need! - Ben -----Original Message----- From: therion-bounces@speleo.sk [mailto:therion-bounces@speleo.sk] On Behalf Of Bruce Mutton Sent: 12 November 2007 19:09 To: therion@speleo.sk Subject: Re: [Therion] Printing xvi maps (done with pdf's) Hi Ben My first encounter with Therion was about two weeks ago, and the things that work well for me just seem to keep getting better, but there are some (rather critical) things that still escape me, like overlaying scraps onto the centreline. It should be the TO station and the FROM pair is copied from them. I means in the case you have only one LRUD data the "passage" should be the rectangle, if two sets the "passage" should be generally trapezoid. Martin S.
Hi Bruce, Yup - I remember struggling with the same problem, trying to understand some of the basic description in The Book! (One typical example: it doesn't actually explain what an Extended Elevation is and its very difficult to reverse engineer this from the explanations of how to control extended elevations.) I'm not sure I understand exactly where you are getting stuck, so apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs. I create Maps in my top-level UpperFlood.th file (the Source file), attached. You will see I have organised this into sections. You will see that I group the .th2 files against the associated .th survey file. So far, I have not added much detail within the cave, so my "join" commands are very simple. Therion's default interpretation for joining scraps is excellent and it usually get's it right without the need for complex join statements. I haven't yet worked out how to label particular points in a line for joining purposes! The Maps section defines the maps that reference the scraps from the various .th2 files. I've struggled to understand exactly what Preview Above / Below do; what Break does; when Surveys, Maps and Scraps can or can't be included in a map. So what you see here may not be "best practice" but it works for me! The Map is then Selected in the thconfig file. Each select statement can have one map, but there can be multiple select statements. Because Therion is complex, there are often two ways of achieving the same goal. You can create a higher-level Map that includes other Maps, so that you only need one Select command in thconfig, OR, you can achieve the same by Selecting all of the constituent maps in thconfig. I've also struggled in the thconfig file with the Select command. Unselect doesn't work for me, so I now have a number of different thconfig files for different outputs, each of which selects particular maps from UpperFlood.th. Bruce -----Original Message----- From: therion-bounces@speleo.sk [mailto:therion-bounces@speleo.sk] On Behalf Of Cooper, Ben Sent: Wednesday, 14 November 2007 12:17 p.m. To: therion@speleo.sk Subject: Re: [Therion] Printing xvi maps (done with pdf's) Hi Bruce, Yup - I remember struggling with the same problem, trying to understand some of the basic description in The Book! "...I then create passage-name.th2, insert th XVI, insert station points over the centreline, and draw the walls over the LRUD with reference to any sketches we have produced. It's that simple." Thanks Ben Appreciate the explanation. The way I have been working is pretty much the same as what you describe, and apart from some confusion over the difference between 'input' and 'source' commands, and LRUD data, it's been fairly straight forward and successful. Ladislav's reminder is helpful. On reading the Therion Book I am not clear on which station the LRUP data is supposed to apply to if only one set of the number pair is provided? Anyway Ben. Your explanation stops short of the point where my difficulty begins. So once the scraps are produced, I'd like them to turn up in the output files, pdfs, for example, so that our centreline plots become cartographed maps as we progress through the drawing process. I am sure there is a simple misunderstanding I have that is tripping me up. There seems to be quite a good explanation at http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=tbe:wiki3 but Therion keeps coming up with errors. Maybe I should try replicating exactly the example from the Wiki, or spend some more time with the 'rabbit cave' example that comes with Therion... Ben Have just started dissecting your UpperFlood.th example. Very nicely documented. I assume it is what is described in 'the book' and the wiki as an INDEX file, tying together the various survey and scrap files for a single cave, prior to processing with a thconfig file. Order of Commands I notice the centreline block of code with equate commands comes BEFORE the input commands. This implies that sequence of commands is often unimportant in Therion? (Logically the equate commands can not be actioned until AFTER the input commands which parse the survey stations 'to Therion') Similarly your map components come after the top level map definitions. Or am I missing something? Grid & Legend I'm intrigued by the grid and legend input and map definitions. Have you done something more refined than that generated with the thconfig export command? Location of Maps Do you create all of your maps in the INDEX file, or are some defined in the lower hierarchal level survey.th files? My experiments so far have put my single (unsuccessful) map definition in the lowest level survey.th file (to keep it as close to it's source data as possible - and perhaps simplify my INDEX file) Does this make a difference? Perhaps it is my mistake? Elevations Completely irrelevant to bens example. But I just figured out why I could not get projected elevations to work. The syntax, complete with square brackets is; export map -projection [elevation 60 deg] -output cave.pdf (I was assuming the brackets denoted optional arguments, and so I was leaving them out!) Bruce
input commands. This implies that sequence of commands is often unimportant in Therion?
In most cases, it is like this. Therion first creates all objects in surveys and afterwards it starts linking them together (e.g. controling map and station references).
Grid & Legend I'm intrigued by the grid and legend input and map definitions. Have you done something more refined than that generated with the thconfig export command?
What exactly would you like to receive? Here we have a lot of things in the TODO list.

Well, we are also not very happy with input language - a lot of things are not intuitive... but it is too late to change it :( It was one of not very happy choices at the beginning. Regards, S.

Thanks Stacho, your comments appreciated, helps clarify my understanding of Therion. Regarding the above quote, I was more wondering about the names used in the code from Bens file (copied below). Why would there be survey or scrap data associated with Legend and Grid? Unless Legend and Grid are names of a cave passage and not the legend and gridlines produced on a finished output? Perhaps Ben can elaborate. input Legend.th input Legend.th2 input Grid.th input Grid.th2 map UF_m0 Legend_s1 Grid_s1 endmap Or am I completely confused? Bruce

Apologies for delayed answer - busy with the family! At Hidden Earth (the British Cave Research Association's annual conference here in UK), the survey output of Upper Flood received some constructive criticism. Specifically, the grid had no co-ordinates, and the legend was too small. So these .th2 files are an attempt to address these criticisms. Grid.th2 provides numeric Eastings and Northings along the left and bottom of the map. It works well. Legend.th2 is a failed attempt to provide a larger legend. The problem with the default legend is that it is scaled according to the layout scale. Upper Flood was printed on a large sheet of paper (A1) with a Therion layout scale of 1:500. All of the labels are positioned for the 1:500 output, which also provides a reasonably fine drawing pen and looks good electronically in PDF as one can zoom in for the detail. However, when printed, the Legend is very small. What I needed was a huge "Upper Flood" title and reasonable text size for the North arrow, and the rest of the legend, so these things stood out even when viewed from some distance. How can I override the default size of the legend? Regards, - Ben
Can anyone help? Is there a way of changing the font size and North Arrow size of the Legend text without changing the scale? - Ben

It is a TeX specific question - but MartinB is quite busy right now, so I will try to help. You need to predefine TeX macro called \legendcontent, that can be found in tex/therion.tex file (see therion sources). You may do it in your layout. Example: layout mylegend code tex-map \legendcontent={% \hsize=\legendwidth \ifnortharrow\vbox to 0pt{\line{\hfil\northarrow}\vss}\fi \edef\tmp{\the\cavename} \ifx\tmp\empty \else \color[0 0 0]{\size[26]\the\cavename}\color[0 0 0]\vskip1cm \fi \ifscalebar\scalebar\vskip1cm\fi {\rightskip=0pt plus 3em\parskip=3bp \edef\tmp{\the\comment} \ifx\tmp\empty \else {\size[12]\the\comment} \par\medskip \fi \everypar{\hangindent=2em\hangafter=1} \edef\tmp{\the\cavelength} \ifx\tmp\empty \else {\size[12]\si\the\cavelengthtitle: \ss\the\cavelength\par} \fi \edef\tmp{\the\cavedepth} \ifx\tmp\empty \else {\size[12]\si\the\cavedepthtitle: \ss\the\cavedepth\par} \fi \edef\tmp{\the\exploteam} \ifx\tmp\empty \else {\size[12]\si\the\explotitle: \ss\the\exploteam\quad\si\the\explodate\par} \fi \edef\tmp{\the\topoteam} \ifx\tmp\empty \else {\size[12]\si\the\topotitle: \ss\the\topoteam\quad\si\the\topodate\par} \fi \edef\tmp{\the\cartoteam} \ifx\tmp\empty \else {\size[12]\si\the\cartotitle: \ss\the\cartoteam\quad\si\the\cartodate\par} \fi \edef\tmp{\the\copyrights} \ifx\tmp\empty \else {\size[12]\ss\the\copyrights\par} \fi } \formattedlegend } endcode endlayout export map -layout mylegend As you can see \size[12] is macro for setting font size. The north-arrow macro is currently not easily customizable at all. You have to add the following to the layout code metapost def s_northarrow_SKBB (expr rot) = T:=identity scaled 0.7 rotated -rot; thdraw (-.5cm,-1cm)--(0,1.5cm)--(.5cm,-1cm)--(0,-.5cm)--cycle; thfill (-.5cm,-1cm)--(0,1.5cm)--(0,-.5cm)--cycle; enddef; with values .5cm, 1cm, 1.5cm replaced by larger values. You may use quite complicated structure of folders to sort your data, for example: my-cave input data scraps indexes index_equate index_join maps my_modified_thconfigs output scans thconfig etc. and glue them together by input commands Try to use "debug" parameter in layout to check the original data and changes therion did. m.
Hmmm, there really seems to be some BUG in the program. Are you able to separate files, which produce these strange maps (including config files)? It would be great, if you could send them to me that I can debug the program. With your file attached - I receive (as Bruce did) same more or less correct result. But there is evidently some problem with LRUD orientation in the program. Thanks, S. Cooper, Ben wrote:

Here is the raw data for NewPassage that reproduces the problem in the pdf that isn't in the xvi. I've included a th2 file as a "viewer" for the XVI. Most of my survey legs are commented... Note that the BenPlan.pdf that Bruce produced also had a problem. Although each LRUD section was not flipped as here, the passage width from one LRUD section to the next shows a discontinuity which is again different to the xvi, and incorrect. See for example at stations Leg1.2 and Leg1.4. I will extract the relevant files and generate the problem tonight and send in. The interesting thing is that the raw xvi is OK, whereas the PDF is muddled up.
This would be great! The PDF code is just <copy & paste> of XVI code - so obviosly I copied something wrong. Regards, S.

Hmmm, there really seems to be some BUG in the program. Are you able to separate files, which produce these strange maps (including config files)?
It would be great, if you could send them to me that I can debug the program. With your file attached - I receive (as Bruce did) same more or
less correct result. But there is evidently some problem with LRUD orientation in the program.
Thanks, S.

Hi all, This discussion on a potential bug on LRUD interpretation in xvi maps reminds me of a bug that I found a few month ago in about the use of LRUD in 3D lox models. I just prepared a short example included below in which left and right width for leg 2-3 are correct in the Test3D.lox if the last line (leg from station 2 to 4) is commented and are inverted if the line is not commented. However, in both cases, the xvi produced seems to be OK. Maybe the causes could be related to the previous discussion? Xavier PS: as this is my first intervention of this list, here are a few information about myself: I am a french caver living in Antibes. I'm caving and surveying for more than 15 year. I came to Therion about 6 month ago for an archeological mine survey of more than 1km that is evolving every year. I might send examples of that survey (and of the requirements that I would have to do it better) one of these days if I can find the time. Stacho Mudrak a écrit :

Here is the raw data for NewPassage that reproduces the problem in the pdf that isn't in the xvi. I've included a th2 file as a "viewer" for the XVI. Most of my survey legs are commented... Note that the BenPlan.pdf that Bruce produced also had a problem. Although each LRUD section was not flipped as here, the passage width from one LRUD section to the next shows a discontinuity which is again different to the xvi, and incorrect. See for example at stations Leg1.2 and Leg1.4.
Hmmm, there really seems to be some BUG in the program. Are you able to separate files, which produce these strange maps (including config files)?
It would be great, if you could send them to me that I can debug the program. With your file attached - I receive (as Bruce did) same more or less correct result. But there is evidently some problem with LRUD orientation in the program.
Thanks, S.

Just few remarks:
1. Did you use latest version of therion (0.5.1)? It is a new feature in that version.
2. You may also use other colors that gray. Just add color map-fg [100 50 50] to your layout. Numbers mean intensities of red, green and blue.
3. Options in layout and export command are the same. In layout, you can use
color map-fg 50
and in export command option -layout-color map-fg 50

export map -projection plan -layout bruce-map-export \ -layout-color map-fg 90 \ -output SurveyPlan.pdf -fmt pdf
Try this Ben. The 90 gives a passage that is more lightly shaded than

Ah, Stacho. Two types of grids! That explains part of my conundrum. Now that I know it exists I'm not sure what the map atlas grid might be for? The other relates to the co-ordinate grid; illustrated by the attached pdfs, scaled at 1:1000. When specified as 10 10 10 I get nice continuous grids, but when specified as 50 50 50 or 100 100 100 (and no other changes) I get cross hairs, which are not too my liking. These two types of coordinate grids, continuous and cross hairs, are nice options, but how do I control which type I get? (The attached include 'map atlas pages grids' as well as 'co-ordinate grids'. I can get rid of the former, thanks to your previous post) Bruce

Actually there is just cross-hairs type defined in metapost. When you use 10 10 10 spacing, they overlap the neighbouring crosses and create an illusion of continuous lines. However, this behaviour is not hard-coded and can be redefined in metapost. Martin

You get 1cm cross-hairs also in 10 10 10 grid, but they are too close to each other :) Just redefine grid symbol to receive solid grid -- i.e. add following lines to your layout: code metapost def s_hgrid (expr xpos, ypos, xsize, ysize) = pickup PenD; draw ( if xpos < 0: 0 else: -xsize/2 fi, 0 ) -- ( if xpos > 0: 0 else: xsize/2 fi, 0 ); draw ( 0, if ypos < 0: 0 else: -ysize/2 fi ) -- ( 0, if ypos > 0: 0 else: ysize/2 fi ); enddef; endcode Regards, S.

Regards, - Ben

OK thanks. It's just good to know that it is in the TODO list :-) Xavier Stacho Mudrak wrote:

So far, this new version does not change anything to the bug in the production of 3D files I signaled. Here it is again: left and right width for leg 2-3 are correct in the Test3D.lox if the last line (leg from station 2 to 4) is commented and are inverted if the line is not commented. In both cases, the xvi produced is correct.

Well, in the last developement snapshot - this bug should be fixed. This time it was a problem of loch, not therion export. Regards, S. Xavier Pennec wrote:

Well, there is no direct way how to print XVI and I can not imagine how it would be possible.
I'm sorry, the LRUD as rectangle is only in case of first station has no LRUD defined so it is copied from TO station. If there is LRUD it remains the same for next leg exception you use [from to] option. Ben, I tried your data and it looks OK - check attached PDF. The thconfig is quite simple (test.th is your data just commented equate line): source test.th export map -o map.pdf -layout-color map-fg 90 -layout-debug station- names ms.
Hi Stacho, Sorry to go back to this old one! In your email of 6/11/2007, you wrote
source map centerline-map my-survey endmap endsource
select centerline-map export map.pdf -layout-color map-fg 50 -layout-scale 1 500
But when I try to wrap my survey within the map-endmap context, I get the following error: C:\Program Files Ben\Therion\therion.exe: error -- UpperFlood_CL.th [41] -- no projection for survey If I add "-proj plan" after the map statement, then the above error disappears, but I get the warning:- C:\Program Files Ben\Therion\therion.exe: warning -- thconfig.500CL.tp [10] -- object not found -- "centerline-map" The output is still produced as desired, because by default, all surveys are selected. Can you explain what is going on with the map and select commands? I have included my raw source files that display this behaviour, simplified by commenting out most of the include files. - Ben

Your map is in UpperFloodCL survey, so you need to insert: select centerline-map@UpperFloodCL There is an easy way how to select maps correctly. Just open the "Map structure" toolbox in xtherion compiler and double click on the desired map in the map tree. The select statement will be added at current cursor position in config file. Map structure is associated with configuration file and updated after each compilation. Regards, S.
