Hello I'm wondering if there will be a "point depth" in future releases!? It's very common to put some numbers in a map witch have a horizontal line on top on it. This represents the depth of a cave at this point. Or did I missed it and it's already implemented anyhow? best, Torsten
Hi, search in TherionBook for point height or point passage-height. Depth can be specified with negative value. L. 2012/5/4 Torsten Schnitter <torsten.schnitter@netcologne.de>

Hi I tried these points. And, yes, you get the right numbers. What I meant was more or less the kind of "drawing" the number. I would like to have a number with just a line on top on it (no circle around). As I know a lot people use a number with a circle around for passage hight. OK, this you'll get with passage-heigt. Perfect. And for depth they use a number with a line on top. All mexican cave plans I know are drawn like this. Is there any possibility now to get such numbers or is it an option for a future release? best, Torsten "Ladislav Blažek" <lada@jeskynar.cz> hat am 4. Mai 2012 um 17:27 geschrieben:

You may generate any symbol you want in therion generally. But if the particular symbol is not yet defined somebody must do it. For example to start with new symbol set, let say "Mexican", and created (coded, programed) all necessary symbols in MetaPost. Temporary one may do it for user defined symbols in layout section. As first step generate the list of all available symbols - see Appendix in TherionBook and check how to use symbols from different symbol sets in you map in layout section. Martin s.
There is no such symbol right now. You can use point altitude for this purpose and set up a grid origin to the altitude of cave entrance. But it will not generate number with line above. It is no problem to redefine it - but one question remains. Would it be better to have both - point altitude and point depth or just point altitude with some kind of "depth" rendering mode is enough? In other words, have you ever seen a map, where both "depth from the entrance" and "altitude above sea level" are rendered with different symbols? Thanks for feedback, S. Hi I don't know any map with both marks in it as I can remember. But a possible use for both within a map may be given. E.g. if you have a cave with a depth of 10m at the entrance at an altitude of 100m above sealevel. A km inside you may have also a depth of 10m but the altitude may be 120m or just 80m (whatever). It is possible the aquifier to be not at the same level all the time. So may be there is a use for both markers. Thanks for help. best, Torsten Stacho Mudrak <lists@group-s.sk> hat am 7. It seems there are many interpretations of what a point depth might be in the context of the whole cave (as compared to just a feature such as a pit). I think Torsten is thinking of an interpretation that I did not think of until his last post. Depth = elevation up or down relative to one of the entrances Depth = elevation down relative to the highest survey station Depth = elevation below (or above if negative) the free water surface Depth = distance below the ground surface directly above the point Depth = others? The first two can be imitated with point altitude as Stacho says, if you don't mind using an arbitrary z origin for your map coordinates. If you adopt the third meaning then the value of a new depth entity could usually be calculated by therion (once modified to include this feature). If you adopt the fourth meaning, then it's value must always be manually entered by the user, as the ground is generally undulating. Mind you, I imagine that therion could perhaps be modified to calculate the depth below ground if a surface grid entity has been entered. Bruce

You are right, Bruce. Therion is theoreticaly able to do mostly everything. But somebody must to code it. That is the problem. m.s.
