Thank you Beat. That explains why I have never seen it in my data. I have not yet flipped an extended elevation in PocketTopo. Now I can update my cave converter to handle text export files with these characters knowing what they are for. I had an enquiry as to what this converter tool was I an talking about. Details can be found here for those who are interested: http://wscc.darkgem.com/caveconverter/ Footleg On 26 January 2015 at 15:19, Beat Heeb <heeb@speleo.ch> wrote:
The ‘<’ character after the trip number means the extended elevation runs to the left.
Without the character it runs to the right.

Thanks. So I think I may have suspected that this option was the cause of the problem I was investigating. But it sounds like it is not related. What I am actually trying to work out is what is causing the text export file from a PocketTopo survey someone sent me to include a < character between the trip number [1] and the comment in double quotes. I've not seen this in any text files exported before, and I need to know what it indicates so I can update the parser in my cave converter program.

The direction used for the extended elevation is set by the ‘Flip’ command in the drawing context menu.
This completely independent of the shot direction set by the ‘Shot ->’ command.

I believe it is the direction used on the extended elevation (from memory)

Can anyone tell me what the purpose/use is of the menu item in PocketTopo on the data screen which says either 'Shot ->' or 'Shot <-' ?
I see it set to one or the other on my shots depending whether they were forward or back shots. But then the shots direction is still indicated primarily by the station names in the From and To columns. So I am not clear what this menu item does or when I might want or need to use it?
