aven started to work when it was upgraded to 1.2.2

Hmm, nothing obvious looking changed in 1.2.2 itself (only think directly GL-related was the new font drawing approach).
What Survex version were you using before 1.2.2? If it was<1.2.0, It's probably this change then:
