It sounds like you are at the stage of using the thbook as a reference.

I've not tried this, but my first attempt would be to override the token
registers as described on the wiki

The layout commands, thbooke page 49 on, gives a good indication of what
is available without getting into code. North <true/grid> are the
options, default is true
