British cavers are complaining that therion doesn't have a BCRA-type slope symbol. I know I know learn metafont and do one myself but time is short and i'm hoiping it's easy for an expert so I can get MArtin to do it :-) Here: http://cucc.survex.com/expo/smkridge/161/300dpi/balley.png and http://cucc.survex.com/expo/smkridge/161/300dpi/knoss.png are examples showing typical use - the filled black triangles in boulder alley and the smaller ones at over the rainbow, then more in knossos chamber, tower blocks, tower hamlets and waterfall chamber. Long thin ones are used for very steep slopes. Short fat ones for more normal sloping floors. Can you help, or give me a lcue for where to start doing it myself? Also I just noticed there is a therion 0.3.10. Did I miss an announcement for this? I'll do a debian upload now I know about it, anyway. If I have understood, you would like to change following symbols: point gradient line gradient line slope I thought, you have already changed at least some of these symbols (see Jenny's map of Eislufthohle http://cucc.survex.com/expo/plateau/76/76_final_col_small.png). In any case, we should probably create BCRA symbol set in standard therion distribution. We will try...

I thought, you have already changed at least some of these symbols (see Jenny's map of Eislufthohle http://cucc.survex.com/expo/plateau/76/76_final_col_small.png).
I kind of cheated to do this, I noticed that the BCRA slope symbol is similar to the UIS entrance arrow symbol. I also noticed that the BCRA clay symbol is the same as the UIS flowstone symbol. So as the cave i was drawing had no flowstone, but some clay (and I didn't mind not being able to use the UIS entrance arrow symbol), Olly helped me to add the following to the thconfig file: code metapost let p_gradient = p_entrance_UIS; let p_clay = p_flowstone_UIS; which successfully worked for the point symbols anyway. Presmambly it wouldn't be too hard to get therion to have an option for BCRA symbols, as many of them already exist, although sometimes for different things. Thanks, Jenny
Thanks Eventually got it to work, you also need to the line symbol-set UIS which I had in the layout, and seems to override the replace. Andrew Jenny Black wrote:

Yes I suppose so. Possibly only point gradient and line slope. I don't really understand what the difference between line gradient and line slope is?

That would be nmarvellous. I've just downloaded JD Hobby's metpost book, and read the relevant section of the thbook but it all looks rather scary. A way to create new symbols with something mere mortals can understand, like SVG would be nice, although I can see that SVG->metpost is probably not possible.

You could look at http://www.pstoedit.net/pstoedit/ which claims to support both SVG and MetaPost. I've never used it for MetaPost though, so have no idea how good a job it does. John

Line gradient is a simple arrow. Line slope defines in fact an area and should draw a lot of arrows perpendicular to the given line.

I have also huge problems with metapost, but drawing simple symbols is really easy, when you just modify existing ones. There are just two important commands: thdraw - which draws a path thfill - which fills a path with color and path is defined like: (X1,Y1) -- (X2, Y2) .. (X3,Y3) .. cycle -- means straight line .. means some sort of spline cycle (not neaded) means that path is closed With this, you are able to draw most of the symbols. Some lines or area symbols are more complicated, but I think that basic things in metapost are not more complicated than in SVG. Regards, S.
This is my overloaded symbol for gradient point. I want to make a line symbol for gradient but I havent gotten around to it. code metapost def p_gradient_AMER (expr pos,theta,sc,al) = U:=(.15u, .4u); T:=identity aligned al rotated theta scaled sc shifted pos; pickup PenC; #Left Hand side thdraw (-.3u, -.2u) -- (-.7u, .1u); thdraw (-.2u, -.1u) -- (-.4u, .6u); #Centerline thdraw (0u, 0u) -- (0u, .9u); #Right side thdraw (.3u, -.2u) -- (.7u, .1u); thdraw (.2u, -.1u) -- (.4u, .6u); enddef; initsymbol ("p_gradient_AMER"); endcode Philip Schuchardt On Wednesday 03 May 2006 11:34 pm, Wookey wrote:

snip. OK, thanx a lot for that. Now I just need to know what to do with it in order to use it: I have an example of overriding a symbol in a thconfig file # bodge to make floor-steps look sensible code metapost let l_floorstep = l_border_visible_SKBB; This goes inside the layout/endlayout. so we want something like code metapost let p_slope = p_gradient_AMER; What I don't know is where we put the files (or how to find out the symbol names we want to override). There should be a load of symbol files, but they seem to be compiled into the therion excutable. And there needs to be some way for users to find out symbol names. (I looked in mpost dir in source and grepped, but that is not suitable for users that want to change a symbol). It looks like we need to add the snippet provided to the symbols in mpost/thPoint.mp file and then rebuild therion. Guys - how do we add new symbols like this? If the answer is 'rebuild therion from source' then something is wrong in the design... Maybe an extrernal path is checked as well as the internal library? It must be possible to have an external symbols library. I know you built everything in to avoid people having problems with paths, but it is a horrible hack. At least for the debian version I would really like to move the metpost and tex stuff back into the places it should be, then I hope adding new symbols would be something that could be by users. My feeling is that we cannot excpet all possible wishes of everybody for producing final documents to be included in the Therion functionality or syntax. I would rather expect that the produced drawings (currently pdf or svg, if you neglect a number of confidential other formats) could be exported in existing formats, usable by tools for creating more general document, or even to PAO software. So for example in your case, Xfig or illustrator could be options for doing the specific layout you need... But I'm sure that it is quite difficult to have _ALL_ maps/atlas elements exported in any existing format... Eric.
I agree, and that it what I am doing, however you did ask. They plan and elevation is okay to move, but the cross sections are proving very difficult (tedious) at the moment all of them have to be picked up and copied to a frame. If there was a way (maybe there is and I have missed something) for the cross sections from all the different th2 files to be put together in one pdf, that would be a brilliant start. I am just not sure, how this should be done. I see only one way: 1. Replace all sections in the map with automatically generated numbers. 2. List all sections with these numbers in map legend or separate page in atlas. This I can imagine, but I am not sure, whether this is what you asked for. In any case - we will open cross-sections sooner or later. I am currently working on new 3D generation algorithm and for this, we will definitely need exact positions of cross sections in 3D. I am not sure about exact placing of cross-sections this is further ahead than I am going at the moment. As for cross sections on one page I was thinking along the lines of been able to list a coordinate and a cross-section scrap. You can do this at the moment within the same th2 file as the scrap is in. I just want to be able to do that in any th2 file, possibly a blank one. Hope that makes sense Andrew Stacho Mudrak wrote:

I am sorry, but input command works only outside layout. In your thconfig, it is between "layout" - "endlayout" pair. If you would like to define some default layout, you should do it like this. 1. Define "layout benarat" in common_layout.th file, as you already did. 2. In thconfig file, use: source Eagleramp_only.th input common_layout.th export map -layout benarat or you can define also specific layout, based on layout benarat: source Eagleramp_only.th input common_layout.th layout spec copy benarat scale 1 500 endlayout export map -layout spec or the same can be done just inside export command: source Eagleramp_only.th input common_layout.th export map -layout benarat -layout-scale 1 500 Hope this helps, S.
Hello I am trying to add areas to the survey I am working on. Most work fine but occasionally nothing happens. Trying to debug this is difficult. At the moment scrolling through the areas highlights the last line (I think) of the area, but it is difficult to see them all. Ideally, from my point of view, I would like to see all the lines highlighted as I scroll through the areas. If this is difficult, would it be possible for the lines to be highlighted when you click on them in the Area box on the right, similar to the way that the points in a line are highlighted as you click on them in the lines box. thanks Andrew PS Sand does not show up until you zoom in well over 100% can it be made visible at 100% Therion 0.3.10 on windows 2000 viewed in adobe reader 7.0.0

Hi I have started to mess with changing colours in the layout. colour map-fg 0 works, as do all the values I have added in the greyscale range It might be a stupid question but how do I enter a RGB triplet tried colour map-fg 0 0 100 and get 'too many arguments' and using any seperators like colour map-fg 0,0,0 gives 'invalid color specification' thanks Andrew
That works, knew it would be easy thanks Olly Betts wrote:

Did you try:
colour map-fg [0 0 100]

Hi Adding a bit of detail to a survey I gained this error http://mulucaves.org/Crash.jpg I am on win2000 using the 20060511 build Therion will compile other files, but Up_and_Running and Whiterock2003 it cannot (possibly others), but I do not know where to start looking for an error. I am reasonably sure I have not edited Up_and_Running since it successfully compiled in version 0.3.10 possible an earlier version. They do compile when part of the whole cave, Whiterock_only.th Data set available at http://mulucaves.org/Whiterock.zip thanks Andrew
To add more to the mystery whiterock_2003 does not appear on the pdf, but Up_and_Running does Andrew Andrew Atkinson wrote:

There was a serious BUG I fixed today. Have you also tried todays (20060512) version? May be, it is the same problem as Toni had two days ago. S. Andrew Atkinson wrote:

Updated to 20060512, still get the same problem, with whiterock_2003 not been through the rest as I have to go Andrew Stacho Mudrak wrote:

I have the same problem and I have concluded that it is a abobe reader problem and not a therion problem. When I use kpdf or xpdf under Linux sand shows up just fine. Basicilly, the problem is what acroread finds important to display. Sand is to small in a large maps so it usually ignores it. If you print the map using acroread, you will find that the sand will show up on the paper. Philip Schuchardt On Tuesday 09 May 2006 2:59 am, Andrew Atkinson wrote:
Hello
I am trying to add areas to the survey I am working on. If this is difficult, would it be possible for the lines to be highlighted when you click on them in the Area box on the right, similar to the way that the points in a line are highlighted as you click on them in the lines box.
thanks
Andrew
PS Sand does not show up until you zoom in well over 100% can it be made visible at 100%

This is strange (BUG). It should show them all.

I remember that it worked. I will check it. S.
A quite ennoying bug that just occured for the second time for me: a the time I run the therion compiler (from the compile button in the xtherion interface), it crashes (empies) the thconfig file, and raises an error complaining that it has no config file...
therion 0.3.10 initialization file: C:\Program Files\Therion/therion.ini reading ... done configuration file: noemie.thconfig reading ... done C:\Program Files\Therion\therion.exe: error -- source files not specified
At the time when the error is reported, the config file (here noemie.config) exists, but is empty, while I just had edited it a minute before. The first time it happened (2 weeks ago) I think that there were a syntax error message relative to this file, but I cannot be sure. This time, I'm sure there were no error (at least no error message) prior to the crash. What is ennoying is that I have the habbit to have all my layout definitions in this file, so it is quite a loss ! I'm using Therion 3.10 on Windows XP-home. Eric.

I am sorry for that, but I have no idea what is behind. I will try to reproduce this error and we will see. In any case, I can add automatic backup of thconfig file, if problems like this will appear in the future. May be a little reconstruction of xtherion would be also usefull. It does not make sense to have two editors of text files (.th and thconfig). I hope I will find some time in the near future. S.

Yes, thus would be helpful. Naturaly, I did a backup by hand, after the crash yesterday, but it means doing it each time you change significantly the config file, add a layout, etc.

By the way, why is it forbidden to have the layout definitions in the main the file, or in another "input" file ? Eric.
Sorry for the delay, but last weeks I have been a little bit busy.

I have added backup of thconfig files to xtherion, just install the latest snapshot. Until I will have more time to find where the problem is, I think this will be a solution. I have tried to reproduce this error, but without success.

It was one of the ideas in the beginning of therion: Input files should be abstract description of the cave. Layout is something, what is not measured in the cave and should be separated from the data. I am not sure, whether this is correct now and I would like to add some possibility to enter input directly in the configuration files. S.

Thank you Stacho. I will install the snapshot, and keep you and the list informed if any problem. The problem being non deterministic anyway (at least from the data I have)... this is certainly a good solution for now. Eric.

The same error several month before on my Mac. Exactly the same situation. The backup copy of thconfig file shoulb be solution. Martin

I am sorry, but input command works only outside layout. In your thconfig, it is between "layout" - "endlayout" pair.
Perhaps the error message could be improved - "unknown option" doesn't really help the user, whereas "the input command can't be used inside layout ... endlayout" would tell them exactly why it wasn't working! Cheers, Olly
That's a good idea, I will put it into TODO list. S. Quoting Olly Betts <olly@survex.com>:

And there needs to be some way for users to find out symbol names. (I looked in mpost dir in source and grepped, but that is not suitable for users that want to change a symbol).
See "New map symbols" section in therion book. Symbol name is derived from its type and subtype.
This is not needed. You may do it via layout and thconfig files. Just define your symbol definitions for example in layout BCRA in BCRA.config file. Put this file into some of therion directories (listed in THERION env variable). Then in your particular thconfig you just write: input BCRA.config export map -layout BCRA Regards, S.

--use-extern-libs command line option will do it m.
