th_formdef.tex runaway text error - LuaTeX
From my query two weeks ago, and Martin's suggestion I try LuaTeX.
I've edited C:\Program Files\Therion\therion.ini to include. pdftex-path "luatex" I'm missing something: Running my thconfig with Mapiah, I get a log file that ends with. making map ... done 'luatex' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. C:\Program Files\Therion\therion.exe: error --Press ENTER to exit! pdftex exit code - 1 Running my thconfig with XTherion, there is no mention of Luatex. I get a log file that ends with. ##################### end of pdftex log file ##################### C:\Program Files\Therion\therion.exe: error -- pdftex exit code -- 1 writing xtherion file ... done I checked my %APPDATA%\ folders, and the only Therion related ini in there is Loch.ini Any ideas? Bruce
Hi Bruce, you need - a recent development snapshot from github - to specify the full path to luatex.exe, like pdftex-path "C:/Program files/Therion/bin/windows/luatex.exe" M. On Sun, Aug 30, 2026 at 11:11 AM <bruce@tomo.co.nz> wrote:

Thanks Martin I’ll need some more hand holding. I can find https://github.com/lualatex which gives many variations that I cannot make sense of, and https://gitlab.lisn.upsaclay.fr/texlive/luatex which looks like it has a definitive install, but it is not github. Is it one of these? Oh, I meant a recent snapshot of Therion, sorry for the confusion. LuaTeX is now included in the windows installer. M. On Tue, Sep 1, 2026, 22:12 <bruce@tomo.co.nz> wrote:

Thanks martin, that makes sense. I thought I had a recent snapshot, but not recent enough. I installed Therion 67248d35 and set it up for Luatex. It compiled a small test project, but fails to render the png background sketches and reports this warning. C:\Program Files\Therion\therion.exe: warning -- unable to read D:/CaveSurvey/th_Canaan/150Tomo/./ptopo/1- 50TomoPlanSketch-300-02of02-transparent.png -- Magick: NoDecodeDelegateForThisImageFormat `D:/CaveSurvey/th_Canaan/150Tomo/./ptopo/1-50TomoPlanSketch-300-02of02-transparent.png' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/739 Reverting my therion.ini and application back to Therion d6d9a18f all is well again. So for now I will pause my luatex adventure until the recent round of Therion edits settles down. Since the string “decode” turns up in my error and features in recent commits, I expect they are the culprit. Should I create an issue on github, or will this message be sufficient to prompt another look at decode? Good morning Thank you Martin Using Therion 6.4.0 + debae9b I have moved to luatex and some initial tests on a single 74 km project suggest it works well. I played with various permutations of debug station-names and maps on/off. Compile times are maybe 3% longer that with pdftex, but that is within the variation observed if I make no changes at all. So speed variation is of no consequence. The exported pdf file sizes are no different and the time taken to open the pdfs (36 s for the largest at 135 MB) does not change between tex and luatex. The issue I had with png images on 67248d35 using luatex has been resolved. Recently I mentioned that ‘maps off’ significantly increases compile time. In working through the above tests I came across a note I made in one of my thconfig files in June 2019. It mentions that ‘maps off’ significantly increases compile time and pdf file size. However now I can confirm that debae9b compile times do not vary appreciably with variations in maps on/off or between tex/luatex. Maps on/off does affect pdf file sizes, but at the moment I have examples where it is trivial and others where it might be that maps off results in a significant increase, but the examples I have are not definitive. Overall, luatex is working well with debae9b. I’ll stick with it. Bruce
