Hi All Michael and I are putting some large scanned map-images on our therion pdf plots, but near the point where they overlap, one always overwrites the other. We'd rather they be transparent so one map-image can be seen through the other. Will it help if I can figure out how to make the white background of the original scans transparent? Does anyone have any tips for making the white area of a jpg or pdf image transparent? I have access to Adobe Elements, but I'm not very good with it, and although there are instructions for doing this I didn't have much luck comprehending what was required. Regards Bruce

Oops, I was using the wrong terminology, What I meant was "transparent sketches", as in the syntax below; sketches on # on/off # morphed sketches Anyway, to continue...
there is no way to make a jpeg transparent. Use png instead
Yes, on reflection I think I'd worked that out previously, and promptly forgotten!

I had not considered this. I was heading in the other direction, considering cutting up the existing scanned maps into smaller portions, (and erasing passages above or below the passage of interest), so that they could be handled more flexibly with therion. A bit like the concept of scraps for drawings, but using it for the 'sketch' images. For instance I could produce a map of only the middle levels in one part of the cave if I hand smaller 'sketch' image' pieces, rather than having to always see all of the passages above and below. Also distortions due to the (very poor) loop closure on the original maps being different to the therion loop closures means that one large 'sketch' image' will be handled poorly, but small 'sketch' images' may be an improvement. To explain the background... We have a 60km (and growing) cave system that has about four plan maps (the 'sketches') that cover the bulk of the cave, each covering 10 - 20km of passages that intertwine above each other. The paper maps are clearly a dead end, and therion offers a way to manage the data and drawings into the future. As a semi-permanent stop-gap measure we are trying to enter a skeleton framework of the survey data into therion, and overlay the 'sketch' images. Currently we have two 'sketches' loaded, such that with about 25km of survey data entered we can graphically represent 30-35km of cave. Five km has been drawn with therion, the rest as described above. The current therion pdf output is about 18 MB in size, obtained with about 1.5MB of 'sketches' as input. So, should I be persevering with transparent backgrounds and possibly smaller 'sketch' images, or stitch them all together and lose some functionality? Bruce

GIF format could be transparent too, but I don't know if in therion too. m.s.
Hi all I know this is just and experimental feature, so this might be on the list of things to do. Why do the cross sections not have the station and splays on them? I am having to do lots of 'tidying' with the notes from underground, and having these on would help massively. The link to the original station would also be useful, but not that important. Getting the drawn cave straight in without having to scan and then link sections etc, is wonderful. (although it has to be said being my first time in anger, it is taking quite a bit longer, spent ages playing with the dxf file, before going for the background image and redoing it) thanks Andrew

This has already been discussed with Beat and fixed in beta version of PocketTopo. I am not sure if he wishes to make beta versions publicly available, perhaps you could ask him to send you the link? Please note that therion 5.2.9 does not recognize connecting line between station and cross section (if data is exported from pockettopo beta); this will be fixed in 5.2.10. Martin
hi all I have got my cross sections where I want them, but now working on the line type. The picture on page 52 of the Therion book shows the type of line indicator I would like on my plan, but I cannot find a way to do it. I have a solid line across the plan with a arrows on, but cannot get it to hide the bit in the middle. I've tried -place bottom but this seems to make no different While searching the book, examples and wiki I have come across a couple more things that I cannot fathom the instructions for On the section line, all the other direction options work but I cannot figure out -direction point I get the error -- no line point specified and I cannot find a way to specify the point. also in the book p27 note 24 "Line showing cross-section position. If both control points of a Bezier curve are given then the line is drawn up to the perpendicular projection of the first control point and from the projection of the section control point. No section curve is allowed." I cannot work out what this means hoping you can help thanks Andrew
Sorry, the picture, on which everything is explained is missing from wiki. We'll try to actualised it. m. On 22.6.2009, at 20:28, Andrew Atkinson wrote:

Hello Andrew,
but I cannot find a way to do it. I have a solid line across the plan with a arrows on, but cannot get it to hide the bit in the middle.
Section lines work a little differently than regular lines. When you place the line, make it a bezier curve and place the control handle that you use to bend the line around next to the spot where you want it to disappear. Do that on both ends of the line. The line isn't *actually* a bezier curve, even though it's constructed the same way as one. It just uses the handles to determine where you want the section line to be hidden.
On the section line, all the other direction options work but I cannot figure out -direction point
Try "-direction end" and "-direction begin" ("start" maybe, i haven't looked in the manual) instead. That will make the arrow appear on the respective end of the line. You may have to hit reverse and then switch the direction if the arrow points the wrong way. Rember, the -direction should be specified in the "options" area of the section line. Hopefully this helps. -Jonny ^v^

In a word, no Martin gave this explanation a few weeks ago... This is produced by new metapost version, which is now included in the windows distribution. The turningnumber (used in therion to detect self-intersecting scrap outline) is not calculated perfectly in metapost, so another algorithm has been included to check the computation. If the algorithms give different results it means that you cannot be so sure that the scrap outline is really degenerated (and you can ignore therion's message about intersecting outline for that scrap). Not sure what happened here, I moved a few points on a line, then tried to start another line, one point was inserted, tried to undo and got an error message, then everything I did including trying to save and close gave me an error. This is very strange. I have tried to reproduce your error, but without success. Until you will be able to find exact steps, that will generate this kind of error - I am afraid I will not be able to debug it. Probably the problem is, that you were doing undos very fast and they were executed in separate threads (no idea how TCL is handling these). This could cause such a problem. If this problem will reappear, please let me know. I can try to put some lock to prevent this. Regards, S. On Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 10:14 PM, Andrew Atkinson<andrew@wotcc.org.uk> wrote:

Yes, you can't have transparency in jpg format. Png accept it, as pdf, but pdf isn't supported in therion map editor... Here's the way I'm working (a little bit trikky, but it works !) : from therion, get the centerline trace, with station points, in pdf format. Open it with Inkscape, and place your scans, redraw them, using Béziers curves Save the file in th2 format (for this, download and install the extension made by Jürgen Bohnert : see http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=inkscape). Once you've done this, you will be able to open your vector file in the map editor, and to correct it as you want (change line type...) Regards Thierry Charles Ghommidh a écrit :
