Calculation of cave volume
Hello everyone - Several years ago I made a map of a small cave. Among the data that was calculated was an estimation of the volume of the cave. I need to find that information again, but it has so far eluded me. I thought it was in therion.log along with other statistics like length and bounding box dimensions, but now I do not find it there. The estimation was based on solids calculated from centerline and LRUD data. I looked in thTMPDIR and found nothing useful. I also checked to see if it comes from Aven or Loch. Nothing there. I looked through a KML file and found nothing. Can any of you point me in the right direction? Believe it or not, I need to testify in court early next week about this. It's a long story ... Thanks! ======== Bill Gee
Hi Bill, normally I export the VTK model of the cave from LOCH then I open it with ParaView With ParaView I export the model in x3d format and I open it with MeshLab where I use the filter "Surface Reconstruction: Screened Poisson" with pre-clean option active After that with the filter "Compute Geometric Measures" you can retrieve the volume on the log view. My big issue is which model is better to export with therion in order to obtain an acceptable volume: the one with "-wall-source splays" or with "-wall-source maps"? Hope this helps good caves to everyone enrico On Thu, Jan 27, 2022 at 1:37 PM Bill Gee <bgee@campercaver.net> wrote:

Hi Enrico - I found a posting on stackexchange with this method. It is not what I used several years ago. What I did back then was much simpler ... if only I could remember it! It seems to me it was in the statistics section of the therion.log file. Someone once told me what goes first when you get old. I don't remember what that was. ======== Bill Gee On Thursday, January 27, 2022 7:52:57 AM CST Enrico Fratnik wrote:

Hi Enrico - Just to see what this method would produce, I installed both Paraview and MeshLab on my Fedora 35 system. I opened a .lox file of the cave in Loch (which displays a 3d rendering of the cave) and then exported it to a .vtk file. I opened the .vtk file in Paraview. It shows nothing. I cannot find the export function. The Save data feature does not offer x3d as a file type. In Paraview the Information tab says there are zero cells, zero points and zero memory used. The x-, y- and z-range are "not available". The .vtk file exists and is about 16k bytes (it is a small cave). Am I missing something? ======== Bill Gee On Thursday, January 27, 2022 7:52:57 AM CST Enrico Fratnik wrote:

I'm not sure, but I somehow remember something about some script that did the caluclation. Never run it so far, however. And I don't remember the name. Would be cool if such a function would be integrated in therion itself and printed to the log... (maybe do both: just use LRUD data and another run by using the volumes calculated from the lox compiler) Am 2022-01-27 15:21, schrieb Bill Gee:

Hi, There was an option to download a .gltf file from cave view and upload it to MeshLab and skip the Paraview software. Unfortunately I tried to do it now and noticed that this option was removed, I'm not sure why...It was very helpful. I hope it will return soon. Hi Enrico - Thank you very much! That helps. There is one more step that I had to figure out - After importing the VTK file into Paraview, I had to click on Apply. What are the units? I think it is all in meters, but not sure. ======== Bill Gee On Thursday, January 27, 2022 8:57:59 AM CST Enrico Fratnik wrote:

One thing that may not have been clear in my original question ... Several people have pointed out a way to calculate cave volume using Paraview and MeshLab. That is great! But not much use here. In this situation I need to be able to reproduce the number I got two and a half years ago. I do not remember how I got that number. Part of this court case revolves around some conclusions that were made by others and which were based on the volume calculation I obtained then. The number I get from Meshlab is almost 5 times larger than the number I got back then. Is it possible that a version of Therion or Survex from back then produced an estimate of cave volume, and since then that calculation was taken out? ======== Bill Gee On Thursday, January 27, 2022 6:37:17 AM CST Bill Gee wrote:
