loch segmentation fault at launch
Testing out Therion 6.2.1+dev, I find that loch does not work. When launched from a command line, it runs for one or two seconds and then gives bgee@main2:~$ loch Segmentation fault (core dumped) bgee@main2:~$ This is on Fedora 41, and it happens on several machines. If it helps any, I captured the core dump file and put it on a server. https://campercaver.net/MiscFiles/lochcore.dump.zip -- =============== Bill Gee
I have heard nothing on this. Therion 6.3.0 was released today. I downloaded from github and compiled. It compiled with no errors. :-) Loch still does not run. :-( Same problem - it throws a segmentation fault during launch. Does anyone else see this problem? =============== Bill Gee On 11/9/24 07:23, Bill Gee wrote:

Hi, no problem on Debian testing. It would help if you could debug it on your system (backtrace output from gdb running loch compiled in the debug mode). Martin On Wed, Nov 20, 2024, 23:10 Bill Gee <bgee@campercaver.net> wrote:

On Win10 Pro Ver.22H2 surface texture in lox file crashes too, so I thought it could behave differently after compiling, but unfortunately there is an iminent error: ERROR: Can not execute "cmd.exe /c "C:\\Program Files\\Therion\\therion.exe" -x thconfig". Hmmm... I made a coredump file available. Is that not useful? How is a debug version of loch created? The crash does not show up in abrt or the ProblemReporting application. I used gdb to run loch. Here are the last few lines of gdb output. After loch crashed I ran the "bt" command in gdb. ======================= Downloading 182.06 K separate debug info for /usr/lib64/gio/modules/libdconfsettings.so Downloading 28.11 K separate debug info for /home/bgee/.cache/debuginfod_client/55594807e24e127c88a7d823b293bb334e0cea3c/debuginfo [New Thread 0x7fffe26006c0 (LWP 2587396)] [New Thread 0x7fffe1c006c0 (LWP 2587397)] Downloading 716.23 K separate debug info for /usr/lib64/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so Downloading 320.29 K separate debug info for /home/bgee/.cache/debuginfod_client/1c817f19fbcb65d0d279cc2d0867d3e3a018e048/debuginfo Downloading 757.83 K separate debug info for /usr/lib64/gvfs/libgvfscommon.so Thread 1 "loch" received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. I did not pursue this during the holidays. Now that Therion 6.3.3 is out, it is probably time to dig into it a bit deeper. Thanks Benedikt and Martin for taking a look at this. The first step in fixing a problem is figuring out how to duplicate it. So far we are not having much luck with that! So far the only thing that jumps out at me is that I am using an older computer. Martin's Intel display is much newer than mine, and Benedikt is using an AMD display adapter. I did not pursue this during the holidays. Now that Therion 6.3.3 is out, it is probably time to dig into it a bit deeper.
I downloaded Therion 6.3.3 from the git repository, compiled and installed it. No errors, that all went very smoothly.
Loch still does not run in a Wayland session. It gives a segmentation error and dumps core within about 2 seconds of launching.
I tried it on three different machines. They all have the same basic configuration. All three fail in the same way.
SCINU reports that Loch works in a Wayland session running on Debian Testing. I am on Fedora 41. Something is different, but I have no idea what it is. Could it be a different version of xwayland?

Confirmed - This problem has something to do with Wayland. I logged into a test computer using X instead of Wayland. Loch starts without error. Logging out and back in with a Wayland session causes loch to fail.
Hmm, no problem in the Wayland session with KDE on Debian Testing (and no problem in the X session, either). Any other Wayland users here that could report crashes or good operation?
With a fresh install from the AUR (archlinux user repository) loch starts without problems on both X and wayland (sway).
therion 6.3.1 (2024-11-22) - using Proj 9.5.0, compiled against 9.5.0
loch 6.3.1 (why is loch --version not implemented?)
If I can help test more, pls let me know
Best,

Thanks Benedikt and Martin for taking a look at this. The first step in fixing a problem is figuring out how to duplicate it. So far we are not having much luck with that!
So far the only thing that jumps out at me is that I am using an older computer. Martin's Intel display is much newer than mine, and Benedikt is using an AMD display adapter. I wonder if the Intel i915 display driver on my hardware is missing some needed function?
Try running loch from a terminal like so: GDK_BACKEND=x11 loch If that works, the problem is probably to do with your wxWidgets packages - the Debian ones have a patch to force use of X11 when the wx GL library is loaded: https://sources.debian.org/src/wxwidgets3.2/3.2.6%2Bdfsg-2/debian/patches/fo... Without this patch, you get a segfault if you try to use OpenGL under Wayland in wxWidgets built with Gtk3. (I'd expect most distros will have moved to Gtk3 by now; things just work with Gtk2 because it doesn't have wayland support so is always using X11 on Linux.) Things have moved on a bit since that patch metadata was written as wxWidgets does now support OpenGL on Wayland via EGL, but there's some issue I don't fully remember the details of with enabling this support within Debian (and probably within any distro) - I think it's something like it needs to be enabled in libglew at the same time and there's some problem with enabling it there. Cheers, Olly

Loch still does not run. :-( Same problem - it throws a segmentation fault during launch.
Does anyone else see this problem?
I just checked therion 6.2.1 rebuilt for debian stable, and that's fine. Will check 6.3.0 as soon as Martin uploads a source package. Hi Wookey - Rather that embed text, I attached a file showing the output on my system from ldd. One obvious difference - My list has 129 entries and yours has 122. =============== Bill Gee On 11/21/24 09:35, Wookey wrote:

Loch still does not run. :-( Same problem - it throws a segmentation fault during launch.
Does anyone else see this problem?
I just checked therion 6.2.1 rebuilt for debian stable, and that's fine. Will check 6.3.0 as soon as Martin uploads a source package.
But it's probably something to do with the set oflibraries in use. What does ldd say?

On my Fedora 41 system there are two locations for therion.ini and xtherion.ini. The first is in /usr/local/etc and the second is in ~/.therion. The files in /usr/local/etc contain only comments. There are no active lines in either file. The home directory file xtherion.ini also is nothing but comments. The file ~/.therion/therion.ini has a few active lines for default character encoding and default units. thbook.pdf is in /usr/local/share/doc/therion. It is the only file in that directory. I don't think any of this has any effect on Loch. What Wookey found is, I think, a different problem. =============== Bill Gee On 11/23/24 19:30, Wookey wrote:

Yes. Agreed. But it prevents me building a version of 6.3.1 (on stable) to test if I can reproduce the original problem :-) I was just explaining why I hadn't done the test I said I would do (and that there was another issue we should look into). Wookey -- Principal hats: Debian, Wookware http://wookware.org/
After some clarifications with Wookey about the build system used: The problem why sbuild works fine and debuild doesn't is that debuild doesn't run in chroot so it's not isolated from the rest of the system. When cmake installs ini files, it first copies them into *.ini.new so that no user-modified .ini files are overwritten, and then tests if there is [x]therion.ini present and installs the files with original names only if they were not there (https://github.com/therion/therion/blob/487bc63ca3d03dbd6ca256c98a8a2642d792...). As debuild sets CMAKE_INSTALL_SYSCONFDIR=/etc, cmake checks for the presence of [x]therion.ini in your system /etc directory. If therion happens to be installed on your system, the ini files are in /etc, so cmake doesn't install them with *.ini names to <<PKGBUILDDIR>>/debian/tmp/etc/, only with *.ini.new names. But debuild doesn't look for them in system /etc, but in <<PKGBUILDDIR>>/debian/tmp/etc/ and fails with a message about missing files. Sbuild works fine as cmake doesn't have access to system /etc, so no ini files are detected and it copies ini files to <<PKGBUILDDIR>>/debian/tmp/etc/ as expected. @Afforix, maybe some modification in cmake files might help cope with this better?
