With permission of the original author (Mike McCombe) and help of Wookey I have recently started to refactor TerrainTool to use v3 ASTER files but seems like we need to target the newest ones... Due to the complexity of the old DEM file parser I'm considering using a dedicated GeoTiff library - anyone has any experiences or suggestions? We're talking about Java GUI app, right now repacked as Maven project, sources can be found here: https://git.sr.ht/~kravietz/TerrainTool
Hello, could gdal be of use here? At least it is what i use to process LIDAR data an i think i used it also to process aster+srtm data (including patching voids from the one with the other)

If there's a reliable workflow to generate surface files for Therion using gdal then I guess so.
I have a (german commented) bash script doing this. Only thing is that it is hatdcoded fir a specific case, but it shows the commands imvolved. Should i post it to you?

Post it here. I doubt if Paweł is the only one interested. Wookey -- Principal hats: Linaro, Debian, Wookware, ARM http://wookware.org/
