OK, I've reproduced the 'text between every item' bug.
Take the attached soundriver.orig file and load it into Xtherion (I used the 20040224 release). In File Commands there is a 'text' item between each real item. Most of them are just a blank line.
If you save there is no change in the file, but if you add a line (and then delete it), then save, then each <lf><lf> turns into <lf><lf><lf><lf><lf>, resulting in soundriver.th2, attached.
Hoipe this helps track it down. This is on Debian GNU/Linux 'testing' release.
