Nice to see my text being promoted here. Sad fact, that it is old, and need to be updated - since Japanese site to get ASTER data was closed, now you should get data in other places, which, from my experience did not give 1x1 degree squares easily. Now I use globalmapper to deal with surface data, it is much faster to get results, but again globalmapper is not free app.
