It's possible to add/change metapost symbols without new therion compilation. The interface is rather experimental but should work.

but it was undocumented. :-) I will try and help with documentation.
There is also documented command-line option --use-extern-libs ;-) When used, therion lets TeX and MP to search for macro files in the run-time. Martin
