[Therion] loch segmentation fault at launch

Thanks Benedikt and Martin for taking a look at this.  The first step in 
fixing a problem is figuring out how to duplicate it.  So far we are not 
having much luck with that!

So far the only thing that jumps out at me is that I am using an older 
computer.  Martin's Intel display is much newer than mine, and Benedikt 
is using an AMD display adapter.  I wonder if the Intel i915 display 
driver on my hardware is missing some needed function?
