As you found, you need config-debian, not config-linux, to build on
debian, and I'm glad to hear it does still work as it's a long time
since it had any attention. But there are quite a few changes in the
kosher debian packages to make sure things like security flags are
set, files are stored in the right paths, system libraries are used,
docs are referenced.

In general you are better off building the packages than the bare
upstream releases unless you really need to for development.
