It looks like you are using these a bit different to the way I do it, so
I'll ask to be sure; Are you using 'export map' or 'export atlas'?

For export map the cave is positioned in the centre of the page when I do
it, and the white space margin is controlled by
  overlap 0.5 cm
(The meaning differs between map and atlas - see The Therion Book).
You can modify the cave position somewhat by forcing the page to be a bit
larger in one direction using
  map-header 110 100 nw
ie, the title and legend in this example is plotted starting 110% of the
original page width to the right.

For export map I think the function of
 size x y cm
 page-grid on

is kind of like a debug feature so you can see how the atlas page
tessellation will cut up the map (I think). I do this once my cave map
exceeds the size of the page I want to use, and then I switch to using
atlas.

If you are exporting atlas, then you can control the position of the page
tessellation using a layout like...

#Set co-ord system and position of map on the atlas tessellation
  #-------------------------------------
  cs EPSG:27200 #NZ Map Grid 1949
  origin-label 1 A #label type
#origin = co-ords of lower left corner of first atlas page
  origin 2502060 6023650 380 metres

Or have I misunderstood?

Bruce
