According Beat I agree with you. It is really big work turning  
surveying of caves from head to legs.
According the organisation of measurement it is by me better to  
measure the splay shots for section first and draw the section. Then  
maesure 3-4 splay shots of one wall and draw it. Another 3-4 splay  
shots and draw again. Then second wall in the same manner and at last  
the important features on floor and ceiling. At last measure next leg.  
This is the way as drawer not to be overdistox-ed.

I'm affraid no way. The Disto A3 is not selling more long time, you  
may find with luck the Stabila LE50 instead. And with this instruments  
only one repair is possible : to change unit to unit. No any service  
parts.

BTW: check http://cachtice.speleo.sk/laser there is an idea of target  
for laser surveying.
