This is how I manage the pictorial representation of continuations.

Include the layouts ...
LayoutShowContinuationQmarkOnly = show standard continuation symbol
LayoutShowContinuationFullText = redefine continuation symbol
that you can find at http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=templates

...then make sure you have...

  #INVOKE LAYOUTS from INPUT files
  #-------------------------------
#uncomment NEITHER or ONE of the following
  copy LayoutShowContinuationFullText
  # copy LayoutShowContinuationQmarkOnly

...in another layout or your thconfig file.
Now you can toggle between having maps with question marks only or maps with
debug-like pinky shaded text that echos the descriptions you have entered
for the continuation points. For continuations in the centreline, you have
to include the centreline in your map definition to get them output of
course.

You have been active, serves me right, I did my search on my hols, and
took a month to send the mail, in the mean time you had written a wiki
page, looks like we are doing the same sort of thing, but I am only
doing it all in the maps, not really got a reason, just the way I
developed it.

It is a little combersome at the moment, I like the idea of a pictorial
output as well, but not sure I can visualise how it would work
