I guess I should try some of these out now.

For the p_label example you gave, I can see how the -scale property test
would go in the same place as the %size test.

Could you give an example of the syntax for the test to print only normal,
large and extra large sized labels?

Something like...
if and(size <> xs, size <> s)
 [standard label metapost code]
fi;
