problem with staggered data format

I've got a file with data in like this:

data normal station ignore ignore ignore ignore newline tape compass clino

This goes wrong at the line
 2  -  -  -  -
with the error:
therion: error -- terikan/elevator.th [56] -- invalid gradient reading -- -

Does the data need reformating to make therion understand or does therion just
need fixing?
