Hi, I have create the following 52 new symbols for Therion: Therion symbol set Topodroid symbol group Points: altar EGB anthro archeo-excavation EGB extra audio EGB extra bat EGB extra bone EGB extra curtains UIS extra danger EGB speleo disc-stalactite UIS extra eletric-light EGB anthro ex-voto EGB anthro gate EGB anthro helictites UIS extra human-bone EGB extra masonry EGB anthro minus EGB speleo mud EGB speleo mud-crack EGB extra nameplate EGB anthro pendant EGB extra photo EGB extra pillar-with-curtains UIS extra pillars-with-curtains UIS extra plus EGB speleo plus-minus EGB speleo seed-germination EGB extra stalactite-stalagmite UIS extra stalactites-stalagmites UIS extra tree-trunk EGB extra volcano EGB extra walkway EGB anthro walkway-metalic EGB anthro walkway-soil EGB anthro walkway-stone EGB anthro walkway-wood EGB anthro water-drip EGB speleo Lines: abyss-entrance UIS extra dripline UIS extra fault UIS extra joint UIS extra low-ceiling UIS extra pit-chimney UIS extra walkway EGB anthro walkway-metalic EGB anthro walkway-soil EGB anthro walkway-stone EGB anthro walkway-wood EGB anthro Areas: mud-crack EGB extra pillar UIS extra pillar-with-curtains UIS extra stalactite UIS extra stalactite-stalagmite UIS extra stalagmite UIS extra I would like to offer them to be included in Therion's source code. My suggestion it to incorporate them Therion distributed in 2 symbol sets: the existing UIS one and on a new one to be called EGB. The ones to go to UIS have their images inspired by similar symbols from UIS. The ones to go to EGB are ones that I can't identify some already existing symbol set to receive them so I am proposing a new symbol set named EGB (for Espeleo Grupo de Brasília = Brasilia's Speleo Group, my speleo group) as many of these symbols were demanded by some fellow members of EGB. This is my suggestion but obvioulsy we can choose any other path, for example: - distribue them differently among symbol set's; - incorporate just some of them in Therion's source code; - not incoporate any of them (I would distribute them as stadalone files to be used by the interested parties as user symbols). As I mentioned, we can follow any prefered path. Please let me know if the idea is to incorporate them in Therio's source code, as I would have to adapt them because, right now they are formated as standalone user symbols. Please advise. Regards, Rodrigo Severo P.S.: The "Topodroid symbol group" mentioned on the table above is the symbol group where each symbol resides in Topodroid. I bet this info isn't actually relevant to Therion but I decided to include it for completeness.

Rodrigo I think your first suggestion is a good one. You could propose to add them to the source code at https://github.com/therion/therion I guess. I have not yet braved contributing via git, but maybe one day, as I also have some symbols to add. Do you have a graphic example of your symbols? Certainly. It's just that, right now I ahve them as user defined symbols. I would have to change a few things so they wuld be Thjerion symbols. I jsut don't want to have the work of doing these changes if there is no interest in including them as Therion symbols.

Here they are. The 3 .th files have the Metapost codes and names of the new symbols. They are all defined as user symbols. The .th2 and thconfig files are the ones I used for testing and to create the PDF I sent yesterday. As I mentioned in my first email, I believe the UIS look alike symbols could be included in the UIS symbol set and only the rest in the new EGB symbol set but I leave the final decision to you. Do you have an ETA for the inclusion of the new symbols in Therion? I'm asking because I want to release them to general use and, outside of this list, people usually aren't that familiarized with Therion so I would prefer to give a final set of instructions on how to use the new symbols. That's why I don't want to release them as user symbols now if in a short time they will be incorporated as Therion main symbols. If you want I can help finalize the inclusion of the symbols in Therion's code. If you do at least one symbol I will be more sure I do all the adaptations accordingly. Please let me know and sorry for putting some pressure. It isn't my intention at all. Regards, Rodrigo Severo
Hi there, we noticed some problems with dots in symbols yesterday, the won't show anymore. I can reproduce this with therion 5.4.4+19eb624 (2019-12-09). The problem exists with the default symbol for "point map-connection", as well as with my custom layout code for clay: ---------------------------- code metapost % --- CLAY --- beginpattern(pattern_clay_AUT_HVHO); % Just draw some fixed points on x/y coordinates pickup PenB; draw (0.20u, 0.30u); draw (0.35u, 0.70u); draw (0.40u, 0.40u); draw (0.60u, 0.50u); draw (0.80u, 0.10u); endpattern; % overwrite default symbol with custom one def a_clay_AUT (expr Path) = T:=identity; % thclean Path; %thfill Path withpattern pattern_sand_AUT ; % original thfill Path withpattern pattern_clay_AUT_HVHO ; enddef; ---------------------------- Has something changed recently in the point definition? I assume, because the default map-connection item should still work but doesn't show points? With best regards, Beni
Yes, with Therion version 5.4.4+4d5750d (2019-12-17) even my customised point map-connection is affected. The dot is missing. In another project, my area sand is looking a bit weird (short dashes, not dots). If I revert to 5.4.4+00a31d0 (2019-10-22) (and remove maps-set and log extend from my thconfigs) then the short dashes have rounded dot-like appearance, as I believe they should. And my map connection gets better. OK, it’s not ‘just’ a Therion issue. Here is the same 5.4.4+19eb624 (2019-12-09) output viewed with Foxit on the left, and Sumatra on the right. If we go back in Therion versions, there is some point where both pdf viewers plot the dots correctly (5.4.4+00a31d0 (2019-10-22) at is OK I think). My previous message shows shots from Foxit (I think). Now I have realised this I will need to start narrowing it down again. Hi, the problem is in a global "linecap := butt;" setting in the point mudcrack symbol (added on December 6) which changes the appearance of the line endings (the dot is a zero-length line which used to be drawn with a round pen). A thorough revision of newly added symbols is necessary before the next stable release. Martin On Wed, Dec 18, 2019 at 8:01 PM Bruce Mutton <bruce@tomo.co.nz> wrote:

Hello again and thank you for the quick reaction. When i compile it with the newest build, the clay renders OK again. However, now the altitude marks at the wall are designated with a small dot instead of the usual small line. In the previous version, also the Questionmark symbol was missing the dot; that seems to be fixed now. The default map-connection is still bugged here, tough.

Hi there,
we noticed some problems with dots in symbols yesterday, the won't show anymore.
I can reproduce this with therion 5.4.4+19eb624 (2019-12-09).
The problem exists with the default symbol for "point map-connection", as well as with my custom layout code for clay:
Has something changed recently in the point definition?
I assume, because the default map-connection item should still work but doesn't show points?
With best regards,
Beni

For me dev-d9361de 2019-12-18 seems to fix everything, when viewed in Foxit Reader and with SumatraPDF. Limited testing only of course, but all problems noticed in last couple of days seem to be resolved for me. Map connections OK Wall altitudes OK Question marks OK Area sand OK Just a thought, and further to my email 30 Nov 2019 <https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg07860.html> , maybe we can put together some sort of guidance or suggested standards for symbol coding, so that these sorts of surprizes are less likely to happen? When i compile it with the newest build, the clay renders OK again. However, now the altitude marks at the wall are designated with a small dot instead of the usual small line. In the previous version, also the Questionmark symbol was missing the dot; that seems to be fixed now. The default map-connection is still bugged here, though. Hi there, just tested at Windows10 with Adobe Acrobat 2019.021.20061; everthing looks good; except the map-connection line: on the first look it looks like its OK, but the faint dots reveal themselves as dashes insted of real dots. See attached image. I compiled it with therion commit 957e867. Am 2019-12-18 21:55, schrieb Benedikt Hallinger:

Hi,
the problem is in a global "linecap := butt;" setting in the point mudcrack symbol (added on December 6) which changes the appearance of the line endings (the dot is a zero-length line which used to be drawn with a round pen). A thorough revision of newly added symbols is necessary before the next stable release.

OK, it’s not ‘just’ a Therion issue.
Here is the same 5.4.4+19eb624 (2019-12-09) output viewed with
Foxit on the left, and Sumatra on the right.
If we go back in Therion versions, there is some point where both
pdf viewers plot the dots correctly (5.4.4+00a31d0 (2019-10-22) at is OK I think). My previous message shows shots from Foxit (I think). Now I have realised this I will need to start narrowing it down again.

Hi Rodrigo - I have some comments on your symbols. First of all - Very nice! I see considerable time expended, and it shows in the results. A few of these symbols would be useful to me. The symbols for danger, cracked mud (both point and area) and masonry have immediate application in some maps I am working on. The label on your electric light symbol is spelled wrong. Why are there walkway symbols both with and without a human figure? That seems redundant to me. What do you use the plus, minus and plus/minus symbols for? What is "ex-voto"? The symbol you created looks to me like a pair of syringes. That is not something commonly found in a cave! -- Bill Gee On Tuesday, November 26, 2019 2:08:01 PM CST Rodrigo Severo via Therion wrote:

I think your first suggestion is a good one.
You could propose to add them to the source code at https://github.com/therion/therion I guess. I have not yet braved contributing via git, but maybe one day, as I also have some symbols to add.
Certainly. It's just that, right now I ahve them as user defined symbols. I would have to change a few things so they wuld be Thjerion symbols. I jsut don't want to have the work of doing these changes if there is no interest in including them as Therion symbols.
Do you have a graphic example of your symbols?
Sure. Here it is: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1vXQg23eaPnG1XiQvohGY3Yhk6S7KxZCz

Totally agree, some really good stuff in there. That cracked mud looks awesome :)

If it helps, I do already have a p_u_warning on the Metapost section of the wiki. https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/metapost#warning_triangle Same idea, different style. (And I have a newer version to update it with...)

A shrine. I think they are supposed to be crutches - if you are disabled, you might leave an offering at the shrine?
Thanks! I will take a look at the symbol already posted. It saves me the effort of doing one myself. A shrine! I never thought of that. A pair of crutches makes sense in that context. That does give me an idea for another symbol, though. A generic wheelchair symbol to designate parts of a cave as handicap-accessible would be useful. I am working on the map of a commercial cave which has a lot of paved trail. Most of their commercial tour is accessible to wheelchair users. -- Bill Gee On Wednesday, November 27, 2019 6:49:34 AM CST Tarquin Wilton-Jones via Therion wrote:

One more thought occurred to me just now ... The cave where I want to use the wheelchair symbol has parts of the tour which are NOT accessible due to stairs. How much trouble would it be to create a version of the wheelchair symbol with a red slashed circle on it? Call it notwheelchair, perhaps. https://www.compliancesigns.com/signs/No-Wheelchair-Access has a picture of what I have in mind. Text is not needed for the cave symbol. -- Bill Gee On Wednesday, November 27, 2019 8:59:45 AM CST Rodrigo Severo via Therion wrote:

Rodrigo, you are indeed spoiling me! The notwheelchair symbol is exactly what I had in mind. Many thanks! When you said "later", I though maybe next week. I need to study your MetaPost code. I have defined a dozen or so symbols, but none with the image method that you are using. -- Bill Gee On Wednesday, November 27, 2019 4:16:20 PM CST Rodrigo Severo via Therion wrote:

Great to know. Enjoy!
I need to study your MetaPost code. I have defined a dozen or so symbols, but none with the image method that you are using.
This method was not created by me and unfortunately I can't remember nor find out where I saw this method for the first time. It's basically: 1. create your drawing on your favorite vector drawing software (I used Inkscape) 2. export to EPS 3. convert the EPS to Metapost with pstoedit 4. finalize the new Therion symbol on your favorite code editor. This is the happy trail for points without holes. Holes can be harder, specially if you actually want them to be holes and not plain white. And for lines, it's a whole other can of worms. Areas are similar to points. Regards, Rodrigo
Amazing work, rodrigo!!! You are a metapost wizard. May i wish something too? I would need a line symbol with 90 degree „ticks“ like the section line, but without the arrow points. Above the upper tick (maybe start of line) i want to print some text, in my case the UIS plan quality quantifier, but probably this would be very useful for other purposes, so a -text option is a good idea...

To do that I need to see how to deal with texts in symbols. I haven't done that yet. There was one symbol - remark - that I didn't create to save me this trouble but I might get to that. Let me just see what's necessary to actually include the already made symbols into Therion. I might have to do some changes. Rodrigo

See my post to this list titled "Re: [Therion] Custom label style for a custom point", yesterday. The solution for this (a function called "create_styled_label") is in that mail.
