[therion-users] readme updates and a query
I've gone through the INSTALL and README docs and made lot of english corrections as well as fixed a few typos and other things that were less than clear. I hope I haven't incorrectly changed the meaning of anything. I'll send the new files and diffs to stacho to avoid clogging up the list. I've now understood the therion syntax and data structures in basic form and have converted a survex centreline dataset to Therion (which now processes without error with therion), but I am completely unable to use xtherion to do any drawing or create th2 files. ( A perl script to do this would be extremely useful as it is currently a very bording process). I might do this at some point. I need some clues about how to start. If I go to 'map editor' and click file->new I get 'Error unknown option -state' - not sure how serious this is. But how do I draw some lines round my survey? How do I get scans in to copy? How do I get the centreline in to draw around? It is impossible to start without some idea about how to do these basic things, or at least some explanation of the principles of operation of xtherion :-) Wookey -- Aleph One Ltd, Bottisham, CAMBRIDGE, CB5 9BA, UK Tel +44 (0) 1223 811679 work: http://www.aleph1.co.uk/ play: http://www.chaos.org.uk/~wookey/

This is a problem of Tk 8.3, try Tcl/Tk 8.4

I'll try to write Introduction to xtherion in the next few days, and include it into Therion documentation Martin

OK - I noticed that 8.4 was specified, but Debian stable only goes up to 8.3 and I avoid using non-packaged stuff unless I really have to, so I tried 8.3. This was only released in June so 8.4 must be pretty new? Testing has 8.4 and I have now moved to testing anyway so I'll install that. <fx: does it>, and yes that problem goes away.

That would be most excellent. Is it (sensibly) possible to write scraps without using a graphical editor? I don't see how I could do this, but maybe you did in fact do this initially? I'll try and finish my debianizing whilst I wait - and will carry on experimenting to see if I can work it out myself. Scrap file is a normal text file, so you can use any text editor to write some (or some script to convert them from other format). But in reality, I can not imagine, how would I create it without some graphical editor. Even in the therion very beginning, we had an graphical tool, that was scaning our movements of mouse over an image. But if you want to read coordinates of walls and stones from the paper and type them in vi - editor, you can... ;-) Until some manual to xtherion will come, you can do following simple steps: 1. Go to map editor 2. File->New 3. Press Insert button in Background images control panel 4. Open some *.gif (limitation of tcl/tk) file 5. Press "Auto adjust" button in Drawing area control panel 6. Open File commands control panel 7. Select "Action" -> Insert scrap 8. Press created "Insert scrap" button 9. click on "scrap1" in file commands list box 10. set "projection" to none in scrap control panel 11. press Control+L (or Edit -> Insert line) 12. draw close line (couter-clockwise oriented ;-) by clicking the last point on the first point 13. save the file as test.th2 Now an export of this simple map should work, if you will type folloving thconfig file source test.th2 export map none If this will work, then the lesson 2 will come. But probably you'll understand a lot of things from this simple example...

We've been discussing this topic, but we would not like /debian directory to be in the root source directory. If it can not be in the /src, than we would appreciate the way of patches... Regards, S.

Thanx a lot, I hope I'll have a piece of time next weekend, I'll try to go thrue it.

You have an 'old' version of tcl/tk ;-), in fact it is not serios - if you will remove it, it will work without any change. But I think, that update of Tcl/Tk is not so complicated. OK, probably I should remove this -state option, because usually people have version 3.2, and I'm working on 4. I'll see...

Yes, we should write some HOWTO file... In fact, xtherion was an experiment - we just wanted to see, whether Tcl/Tk is able to operate 2D editor. When we've recognized, that it is usable - we've moved again back to therion developement. So xtherion map editor is a very minimalistic GUI - a lot of things are now left on operator and we do not plan to change this state in the near future. But writing a simple manual should be a question of one evening, so I should think about it... We will discuss next steps hopefully today, I'll let you know... Stacho
