Hello everyone - Most of my recent questions to this list have generated exactly /dev/null for response. I hope this one gets something. I am trying to build a map where one section of underlying passage is drawn offset from the main map. I have done this before and it worked. This time therion is completely ignoring the offset parameters. What am I doing wrong? The portion that I want to offset does get drawn, and it is drawn below as I specified. It just does not get drawn offset. I tried taking the offset out of the list. Therion complained about that. I tried offsetting the other two partial maps, and that does not work. The last time I compiled a map with an offset, I was using therion 6.1.8 on Fedora 38. Now I have 6.2.1+dev on Fedora 41. Did something change between those two versions that affects how this feature works? I attached the .th file to this message. Thanks! -- =============== Bill Gee
Hi Bill Does your previous project still compile and create an offset map? In your thconfig you should make sure you have some things: * maps on # [on] off ## Setting maps to off disables all previews and offsets, and only scraps from the selected maps are output. Survey centrelines included as part of a map are not output. * maps-offset on # [on] off ## Setting maps-offset to off disables all offsets. Maps-offset has no meaning or effect if maps off is also chosen. * select MainPlan #otherwise the offsets defined in MainPlan will not be exported I’m also not sure what the effect of: A-Survey@CaveSpringCave [0 0 ft] below will be. Zero offsets are not something I remember trying, but it is probably better not to do this while you are trying to debug your project. Hi Bruce - Thanks for the hint about "select". That was the missing ingredient. I was looking all over the map where offsets work - in the .th file! - and missed seeing that in the thconfig file. It's been a year since I did any of this, and that step just got missed. The good news is the offset is working. However, it did some other stuff that I need to get changed. Attached to this message are the .th and thconfig files I am using. The resulting map can be downloaded from https://campercaver.net.MiscFiles/CaveSpringCave-Print.pdf This map is very much "in progress". I have drawn walls for everything that has been sketched and now I am filling details. There is survey line that has not been sketched, and much more survey to be done. On the map you find two entrances, both on the west end of the cave. The big entrance (the A survey) is about 30 vertical feet below the smaller entrance (the U survey), and the passage from it runs under everything else. There is a pit where it joins the upper main passage. I want to draw the A survey -under- the U survey. Before I added the "select" statement to thconfig, it was working. Now it appears to draw the A survey on top of the U survey. There is another passage in the cave that crosses the main passage. This is the X-Y survey. It is above the U survey. When I did not have a select statement, it was drawn with correct shading at the intersection. Now it does not have that. I changed the .th file so that the map for the lower entrance does not have either offset or "below". That did nothing but change its background color. It still is shaded so as to appear above the U survey. As a side comment, I found that whenever I use "above" or "below" on a submap, I must also include the offset [0 0 ft], else therion will not compile the map. Thanks! =============== Bill Gee On 11/12/24 00:29, Bruce Mutton wrote:

Hi Bill The link to your pdf gives a dns address could not be found. Some observations based on what you have written: A map output without 'selecting' a map will draw component map objects based on their actual relative passage altitudes (as far as which appears over or under another). Once a map is selected, the apparent layering depends on the sequence of scraps or maps that is written in the map definitions. Objects at the start of the file plot on top of subsequent objects. For maps-of-scraps, each block of scraps plots at the 'same' level and must be separated by a 'break' statement. For maps-of-maps, each map has an implied break between its neighbours (although you can write in breaks - it will make no practical difference though). Therefore quite a lot of care needs to be taken when defining maps for a complex cave. Your last comment: I'm not sure what use above and below could have if not used in conjunction with an offset, unless it is to invoke a 'below preview' shading on the usual passage colour, without actually offsetting the passage. In which case [0 0 ft] would be required. Above would then have no effect, as there is no passage shading associated with above. Curious to see your map. OK, I see now the effect of offsets [0 0 ft] below on shading, as well as above on the wall linework where passages cross. Both are worthy effects. And yes, I think reordering submaps will resolve issues with rendering of passages above and below. SOLVED! Changing the order of the sub-maps works. They are now displayed with the correct shading to indicate which passages are above and below. I put an updated map on my server, same URL as below. I made other changes, too, such as fixing a survey data blunder and starting to add details in the X survey. Thanks for your help! =============== Bill Gee On 11/12/24 13:17, Bruce Mutton wrote:

Hi Martin - Different naming conventions ... I name my scraps using the start and end survey station name. I name maps with a passage name or something descriptive. Cross-section scraps are named "CrossSection-<station name>". There are certainly other naming conventions. Which one is best?? The one you know! So far I have not needed more than about 5 or 6 submaps for one cave. I often have over a hundred scraps. Using the start and end survey station names helps me find the underlying .th2 and .jpg files quickly. =============== Bill Gee On 11/12/24 02:38, Martin Sluka via Therion wrote:
There is for me one problem: I’m not able to recognize different objects in your th file - scraps, maps, …
I use the names for scraps in the format xxx_yyy.scrap and for maps xxx_yyy.map
Just my 2 cents
Martin
