Therion runtime cmd window lag on compile with Windows 11
Does anyone notice a long delay after pressing the compile button in XTherion, before the Therion cmd window starts echoing processing progress? Any suggestions as to cause and possible solutions? Interested in setups that do and do not exhibit this behaviour. Around October last year I swapped out my aging Win10 device for a fast new Win11 device. Soon after I noticed that XTherion would 'hang' for 5 - 7 seconds before opening the cmd window that echos Therion's progress through the thconf process. It was around the time that changes were being made to the behaviour of the cmd window, circa 6.3.3+ and I loosely attributed the lag in processing to that. Especially since otherwise Therion would process the thconfigs 2x to 10x faster than with my old device. I've recently being editing projects and needing to compile then every 15 - 30 seconds. The 6 s lag has become tiresome, especially for small runs that otherwise take less than 1 s! Thinking might be a change in Therion I just installed versions back as far as 6.0.5 from around February 2022. The problem persisted so I conclude the lag is due to Win11 or something to do with my current device, and not due to Therion. I've had a browse through Windows Security Smart Application Control and Reputation-based Protection, and disabling likely settings has had no impact. I've tried disabling Virus and Threat Protection settings real-time protection and tamper protection and also no change. Bruce
hi, Unfortunately, I’ve always observed this phenomenon on Windows (after 5 years of use), whereas when using Linux (Debian if I remember correctly) on the same PC, it’s like night and day for generation. I don’t have a solution, just my ux Yann Le mer. 18 févr. 2026 à 19:48, <bruce@tomo.co.nz> a écrit :

Interesting Yann… Thinking I was imagining this, I opened up my VirtualBox VM copy of my old device running Windows 10. This VM is poorly configured and typically runs at a glacial pace. Never the less, the lag between clicking compile and the cmd window opening is consistently less than 1 second, more like 0.5 seconds. It is running XTherion 6.3.4+1f7444ab (2025-08-12). What could it be that causes a 6 s compile delay on a fast Windows 11 device versus a 0.5 s lag on a 10-year-old average Windows 10 device (whether physical or virtual)? Hi Bruce, I also observed this lag when my computer was updated to Windows 11. For me there is a 6 seconds lag to open the cmd window, but also a 6 seconds lag at the end when the cmd window is closed and Xtherion reads the output to display it in its interface. I believe that I was not even seing the cmd window before with windows 10 (but I can't go back to check). However, my main problem is the huge delay (which can be of several minutes) for xtherion to display a large th2 file : it take 75 seconds to display a th2 of 2500 lines of text (that is 538 commands). During that time, xtherion says "Processing commands ...", the advancement bar is progressing at the beginning and then the xtherion freezes (not always at the same percentage) and is not responding to anything, until it finishes eventually. Moving one object from one scrap to another also sometimes takes several seconds (in the current example about 5 seconds, but I have broken my th2 file in several pieces because it was impossible to edit the complete map with all scraps when it was taking 30 seconds to a minute for a single move !). I also tried to get back to earlier versions of therion without any improvement (I am currently running xtherion 6.3.4 (2025-04-08)). I was not really able to figure out what was the source of these changes, except that is happened after the update from windows 10 to 11. Xavier Le 20/02/2026 à 09:32, bruce@tomo.co.nz a écrit :

Xavier Sorry to hear your speed issues are even worse than mine. I got a fast device mainly to reduce lag with Therion and opening the exported pdfs. Not so much because Therion was slow but because it is where I spend my most precious discretionary screen time. Other than the start-lag issue, comparison of my old and new therion.log files showed a typically 2 – 5 times speed increase.
For me there is a 6 seconds lag to open the cmd window, but also a 6 seconds lag at the end when the cmd window is closed and Xtherion reads the output to display it in its interface.
At least I only have the lag at the start of the process. The transition from cmd window to XTherion for me is instantaneous. Although I recall on rare occasions an inordinately long end-lag, probably back with Windows 10. Maybe the content of the project that has just been compiled impacts on that?
However, my main problem is the huge delay (which can be of several minutes) for xtherion to display a large th2 file : it takes 75 seconds to display a th2 of 2500 lines of text (that is 538 commands). During that time, xtherion says "Processing commands ..."
That is a disaster. I just checked a 3500 line th2 file, the largest I could quickly find. It takes 6 s to complete the entire opening process (‘opening image’ - which are 5 large PocketTopo xvi files and ‘processing commands’). Moving an object to another scrap is about 1-2 s. So broadly, except maybe in Yann’s case, is it that Windows 11 has added delays (more, or less, extreme depending on user) to Therion that were not present with Windows 10? I have always thought of Therion as placing minimal load on a device. Has anyone come up with minimum, recommended and optimum processor, graphics and ram parameters (other than more is better)? Bruce
Hi all, an update. On updating to version 6.4.0 (2026-05-07), Therion no longer has any lag on compile on my Windows 11 device. Hi Xavier I wonder if Mapiah <https://github.com/rsevero/mapiah> might compile and open th2 files faster? Overall I have found the compiler to have better workflow and may be faster than XTherion. I have a 3500 line th2 file that takes 7 sec to load in XTherion. Loading in Mapiah seems instantaneous.
