I'm making good progress now on learning how to generate various output from Therion, and have started on generating KML plan maps for google earth. My problem is that my survey data is coming from survex .3d files which I am importing. I am working with data for many hundreds of caves, and they are all fixed using UTM with the European 1979 Datum because that is the coordinate system of the expedition area maps we have had for the past few decades. As far as I can tell, this datum is not included in Therion at the moment. I've checked the epsg file in the source. I specifically need the UTM30N zone as all our caves using this coordinate system are in that zone. Is this something which can be added please?

That appears to be the ED50 Datum. I need the EUR79 datum of everything is a few hundred metres out of position. Footleg On 26 March 2011 12:43, Graham Mullan <graham.mullan@coly.org.uk> wrote:

OK, as I've not got anywhere with this, is there a way to ignore the coordinates in a survex 3D file, and instead fix a survey station to a point where I define the position and coordinate system in my therion file, and associate a station in my Survex 3d file with that point? The problem I have is that I am using existing survex .3d files where all the coordinates are in UTM30 European 1979 Datum. This is not the same as the more common WGS84 Datum. So I cannot set the coordinate system for my .3d file directly. You can hopefully see what I am trying to do here: survey LosHoyos #fix 1.0 41.234567 -3.21012 213 import 0072.3d -surveys use #-cs EPSG:32230 endsurvey I am importing an existing survey centreline from the .3d file. I cannot assign this a coordinate system directly as Therion does not support the coordinate system I need. So instead I define the point 1.0 as fixed using the WGS84 Lat Long which I have. Now I want to attach the stations imported from the .3d file to the fixed point to correctly position the cave. Footleg On 26 March 2011 13:40, Footleg <drfootleg@gmail.com> wrote:

You can hopefully see what I am trying to do here:
survey LosHoyos
#fix 1.0 41.234567 -3.21012 213
import 0072.3d -surveys use #-cs EPSG:32230
endsurvey
I am importing an existing survey centreline from the .3d file. I cannot assign this a coordinate system directly as Therion does not support the coordinate system I need. So instead I define the point 1.0 as fixed using the WGS84 Lat Long which I have. Now I want to attach the stations imported from the .3d file to the fixed point to correctly position the cave.
Can't you do that fix in survex so that the numbers right to start with? OK that might be different from your normal processing, but if your data layout is sensible you'll have all the fixed points farmed out into a file which can simply be replaced for the 'therion' version. Not very pretty, I know, but it might do the trick until your desired co-ord system becomes supported. Wookey -- Principal hats: Linaro, Emdebian, Wookware, Balloonboard, ARM http://wookware.org/
Except that these survex files (of which there are a great many) are not managed by me. So I can't just rearrange the way they work to suit my needs. I am looking for a way to work on the data in Therion without having to force changes on the project. All the data is based on this datum because it goes back 30+ years and the detailed maps for the area are all plotted on this old grid datum. So this is the coordinate system the data is fixed with. I am just looking for a way to position my caves in KML export and Therion does not currently support the datum for the coordinate system we are using as far as I can tell. Hi, I am not sure if you need European 1979 datum with geographic coordinates (as your fix example suggests) or projected UTM30 coordinates. In the first case, you could try EPSG:4668, in the second case I could send you custom Proj4 definition if it is fine for you to compile therion from source code. Custom proj4 strings in .th files should be supported in not so distant future as well. Martin
I need UTM30 projected coordinates on the European 1979 datum. So my coordinates in the 3d files are in UTM format (i.e. in metres, not in decimal lat. long. degrees). I can try to compile from source code. I am on Windows, so some tips for compiling would be handy (I am a Java developer, so not too familiar with compiling other languages but can probably muddle through). Hi Footleg, could it be helpfull for you if you do a look to the parameters to convert from WGS84 to European 1979? I havn`t found no formula to convert it automatically. In hope there is someone on the list who has more Informations for calculate it. Geotrans (found at http://earth-info.nga.mil/GandG/geotrans/ ) can convert WGS84 <-> european 1979 (EUR), and many more. Source code available. br, Robert

I attach two files which should replace original ones in therion sources. Compilation process is outlined in the Appendix of thbook. As you don't need to compile Loch, you need just c++ compiler (mingw.org), gnu make, perl. compile using
make config-win32 make therion
then you should be able to use cs eur79z30 Send me some set of identical points if I didn't guess coordinates conversion parameters right. HTH, Martin
Thank you for such easy to follow instructions, and perfect fix! The only slight problem was that the gnu compiler was call gcc.exe and not cc.exe, but once I saw the error and noticed this, I made a copy of gcc.exe and renamed if cc.exe and it compiled fine. My first C++ and make compile :-) My cave is now appearing in the correct position in Google Earth too. Excellent, and thank you again!
