FW: PocketTopo series: separate files
Hi! Thanks for a fast and thoroughly answer. Yes, I'm a member (for many years), and feel free to copy it to the forum. Some comments below. Torstein
seems to be rather restrictive TopoRobot conventions and limitations. Now I think with each version it is becoming more flexible (Beat, the author will be the authority on this!) In fact when I use PocketTopo I break many of the 'rules' about station numbering and loops and have not had any serious data loss or corruption. To be honest I have trouble thinking in 'series' as it is not a concept that is used in New Zealand surveying. I have also problems with thinking in series ...
The key points to note are; 1. Ensure all files that contain surveys that are connected to each other are in the same folder. PocketTopo then displays the centrelines of all these surveys in the background of the current survey and sketch. Do not keep any copies or other files in that folder.
Yes.
2. Main reasons to start a new file are when a new days survey is started, a new survey is starting in a different location, or if the plan or elevation centrelines start overlapping (causing the sketching to become difficult). This way the centrelines of other surveys remain visible and only the sketches of the currently open file can be seen (reduces confusion).
Yes. I think the problem is the use of the word "series" in the sentence I referred to. I thought you by series meant the same as the series in PocketTopo, which is described in the bullet points above that sentence. Could it be an idea to rewrite the sentence?
I use to (and mainly still) do, however, on PocketTopo drawing window you can turn off the other surveys by not selecting show all. (I think it was Ben cooper who showed me this.) This has made me a partial convert. However in the data window, all the legs are still shown, so I find it unusable after about 200 stations. Also I do not think in Toporobot, and having unique numbers for stations does my head in. (okay so that was not strickly Therion so to have some relevance) When I move it in to Therion I the put it back into separate folders, otherwise I find the multiple files you get makes a complete mess, My data set can be found at http://www.ubss.org.uk/cave_survey_archive.php#Cheddar Built mainly from PocketTopo, whether good or bad it works for me Andrew On 29/06/11 21:06, Bruce wrote:

In recent versions if you right-click or tap a station you can select ->data, ->map, ->outline or ->sideview, so that little problem goes away. I have had 5km of centreline survey and many splays in the same folder and no problem toggling directly between the textual and pictorial representations of any particular survey leg. Not quite so versatile with splay shots yet, but I think it is planned. Bruce
