1. I want to achieve that invisible parts are hidden (the surface grid on the backside of the hill). Is this possible? I would estimate that this is not possible with the format svx but what about vrml or 3dmf?
What operating system do you use? You can edit vrml by hand - there is some transparency switch. To view 3dmf effectively, you need a MacOS and Geo3D.
I'm under WinXP ;-(( Can you give me some references to the documentation of vrml? I think I'll have to prepare my surfave grid better (triangles) or something like this and not independent lines in x and y direction. When I've seen it right, the coordinate in the vrml file are not in real UTM coordinates. Can you give me a hint how to prepare my data so that I can include it manually?
2. The overlay of a (half transparant) jpg graphic would also be nice. Possible?
Not yet in therion, but I am actually working on it.
that sounds nice! If you need someone for testing...
3. Can you reccomend a good viewer for vrml and 3dmf? I use at the moment the cortona vrml plugin for the internetexplorer but I'm not completely happy with it. I don't have a player for 3dmf at all on my computer.
Well, to be honest - I do not know any good player, therefore I started to work on my own :) Release is scheduled to april'06 :(
I think I can wait! The next few moth I will not have too much time to create 3D models. First one week of caving somewhere in France and in Februar is already the next expedition scheduled.
4. Is it possible to get a 3d model of the cave by lrud data? Up to now I did not type these into the input files?
Yes, it should be.
I will try out this, but first I have to get the lrud data ;-(( Wolfgang
The results from google show that I will need an istallation cd from MacOsX to install it in an emulator. So this seems not to be an easy solution for me.. Wolfgang Martin Sluka schrieb:

There are emulators of MacOSX under WinXP. Try it. The Geo3D is on:

Why do you see WinXP as a problem? The whole therion developement is currently running under WinXP and Micorsoft Visual C++ and it is much faster then before, when I was using free tools under linux. Especially aplying code changes when the program is running is very handy feature I did not see in any free developement environment :)))

Reading your e-mail, you are probably not using therion surface object. Are you? There you can specify surface grid quite easily without taking care for triangles etc. You can also specify bitmap JPEG file, that will be in the future covering this surface in 3D. Currently this bitmap file is used in the PDF output. When you will do it like this - you will be able to see surface also in the xtherion 3D viewer and vrml. And editing transparency in VRML will be just a question of changing one number.
I will try out this, but first I have to get the lrud data ;-((
Do you have your 3D data in some other caving software? S.

no, I don't have much problems with xp. It only sounded a little bit like that I need Macosx for the 3dim part (3dmf). Probably a more detailed information about the 3D part would be nice in the manual or in the wiki (howto, 3D-viewer, ....)

Probably not. I've included the survace in a very simple way: I created a list of fixpoints survey dem centreline flags surface fix x0y0 723150 2291580 876.52 fix x1y0 723240 2291580 900.91 fix x2y0 723330 2291580 921.25 ... data nosurvey from to x0y0 x1y0 x1y0 x2y0 x2y0 x3y0 x3y0 x4y0 x4y0 x5y0 ... So this is possible not the best way to do it, but it seems that I missed the correct way of doing it in the manual. So I will read the manual again.

i included once a graphic in the pdf but I did not check the xtherion 3D viewer and the vrml that time (also no DEM was included at that time). The last view times I exported the cave as dxf, converted it into a ESRI shapefile and did the overlay externally.

No still in the survey book. :-((( (And it's not my survey book) Wolfgang

Yes. This is missing. But mostly because we started with 2D and 3D features are still only experimental and not very nice. The easiest way how to handle good 3D now is to export .plt file from therion (if you have LRUD data) and use some other program (new Aven or CaveX) for visualization. Geo3D is very nice, but under emulation it is extremly slow.
So this is possible not the best way to do it, but it seems that I missed the correct way of doing it in the manual. So I will read the manual again.
In therion it is done following way (example): # surface command for entering surface surface # grid to specify position of surface # grid X-start Y-start X-step Y-step C-columns R-rows grid 400080 5419750 10 10 190 68 # calibrated surface texture - not yet supported in 3D viewer bitmap <filename> [calibration-parameters] # followed by CxR altitudes matrix 1520 1530 ... ... 1680 1690 ... endsurface S.
